Readable notes describe recent mild days with a high around 76 here and reports from Walter Mann about Mississippi bloom, garden planting by Henry Spangler, kites but no marble games, welcomes from “Mac” Herrington, Robin Moore at the Printery, and various small town vignettes.
Two pilots escaped probable death after parachuting from a twin motor plane that crashed in a field at the Dalrymple farm four miles east of Carthage. One landed on Clyde Henley farm the other on Dayton Stewart farm. They were on a training flight from Freeman Field Seymour when the crash occurred. Local officials and farmers reported the plane ran out of gas may be cause. Louis F. Long and John J. Long suffered minor or no injuries. The wrecked craft did not catch fire and time of crash was 4 a.m. Local authorities guarded the scene until Freeman Field officials arrived.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Roberts announce the birth of a daughter on February 23. The baby weighs 8 pounds 5 ounces and has been named Beth Lea.
About thirty Carthage Lions and their wives attended the Knightstown Lions open house in Knightstown on Wednesday evening. Dancing and cards provided the entertainment while speaker Raymond Tash district governor gave the address.
Victor Altis Jackson 44 died Monday at 1 30 p m at his South Market Street home after a five year illness. Born April 6 1900 in Clay County Illinois son of Isiah Y and Malinda Walsmith Jackson he worked 13 years for Container Corporation. He married Dona Wells on October 9 1926 and leaves three daughters Helen Goble Morristown Ruth Gulley Barbara Jackson and three sons Victor Jackson Jr Vernon and John Allen all at home plus one sister Mrs James Merchant Knightstown and three brothers Oliver Herschell Treece. Funeral at Thompson Funeral Home two oclock Thursday with Revs W F Siders and Charles S Winslow. interment Town Cemetery.
Minnie Braden reports the death of her cousin J. J. Rhodes a former Center township farmer who died Sunday at his adopted son Archie B. Rhodes home in Detroit He was born March 4 1861 and served as Center township trustee He married Efie J Reeves in 1882 who died earlier Survivors include Archie B Rhodes four grandchildren a brother A M Rhodes and sister Mrs John B Gilson of Mays Funeral services were held at the Orville Wilson Funeral Home in Knights Town.
Cpl. Herman Monroe Porter son of John D. Porter of Carthage Indiana, graduated from the Army Air Force Flexible Gunnery School at Laredo Texas and earned aerial gunner wings and a promotion. Pvt. Robert N. Eoff lists Camp Wolters Texas as his address. Ralph Darel Henderson’s address correction is given for Great Lakes Illinois. Chaplain Herbert E. Rieke writes to Maurice W. Brooks in Italy praising his service and character. Cpl. Robert Tuttle reports being stationed in the Hawaiian Islands with visits to Honolulu.
A Monday afternoon fire caused minor damage to the property owned by A. J. Lineback and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Loyall Hunt. The blaze is reported to have started from a defective source.
Former coach and current Saint Anne high athletic director Charlie Morris explains Illinois basketball playoffs. He outlines district regional sectional and 16 team finals at Champaign U S stadium with seeding to pit strong teams in finals. He notes St Anne seeded No 2 in regional at Kankakee and recounts a 9 point loss to Kankakee while leading at half and entering the fourth quarter.

The Carthage Raiders end their season with a 28 24 loss to Charlottesville Eagles in a tight game. Charlottesville led 3 0 after one and 23 19 after three while Carthage shot poorly from the floor. Edwards led Carthage with eight points as Trimb le paced Charlottesville with nine.
Ripley Township Historical Society held a Wednesday evening meeting at the Henley home. Thirty two members and guests shared a cooperative dinner after which president Henry L Stenger reviewed ten years of the society.
Raymon Bowles aged 59 died Saturday at 5 am at his home near Mays after several months illness. Born April 14, 1884 to John and Susan Bowles, he married Emma Brown on February 21, 1906. Survived by widow, two daughters Mrs. Frank Batts of Osgood and Mrs. Dwight C. Sims of Yorktown, and four grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at Center Christian church led by Rev. Marry Chapin with burial in Center cemetery.
World Day of Prayer services will be held Friday at two o'clock at Wesleyan Methodist Church. Mrs Mary G Seekins former missionary to India will speak about her trip to Palestine.
Local sectional tournament action begins this Thursday through Saturday with competitive small county teams. Carthage faces Manilla in Friday’s 7:00 p.m. game at Memorial gym, while New Salem meets Raleigh at 8:00 p.m. Other early matches include Milroy vs Arlington and Morton vs Mays, with Rushville and Arlington favorites among past winners.
Robert Spangler in charge says the honor roll board will be completed in a few days on the library lawn southwest corner. Names of armed forces members are included in 1 1/2 inch letters readable from afar. No dedicatory service is announced.
