A 38 year old man named Bruno Simoni shot a member of the premier Benito Mussolini’s bodyguard at the gate to the Duce’s residence last Friday. Simoni had prior hospital stays and was recently released on parole.
A charming Old Melody Concert at the local auditorium drew a good sized crowd with an all local cast. Mrs A J Carr led the chorus on the organ in colorful costumes and the program included bicycle scene satire and multiple solo numbers. The event showcased the school band and received high commendation.
Ripley Farmers' Cooperative Telephone company joined with twelve surrounding lines to form a privately owned service group. The meeting was held Wednesday last week in Greenfield Hancock county courthouse. Officers named are Clint Parker president and H E Barnard secretary treasurer.
The Choral club expresses appreciation to the school and the East Street Christian Church Duo class for adjusting basketball game and class meeting dates so members may attend the Old Melody Concert.
Elizabeth Walker died at her home on North East street at 7 00 am after a three week illness. She was born September 11 1861 in Shelby county near Piqua Ohio and married Walter S Walker in 1888. She is survived by daughter Mrs Vinton Hudson and previously by son Benjamin who died in April last year. Funeral plans pending.
Dr and Mrs George B McNabb attended the Indiana Iowa basketball game in Bloomington Monday night.
Golden Rule Lodge No 16 of Knightstown and Rush Lodge No 580 will hold a joint inspection at the Rush Lodge hall in Carthage starting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday March 2. A good attendance is desired. Regular stated meeting will be held on Wednesday March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Mr and Mrs Lindley Edward Clark of Indianapolis are the parents of a son born February 9. The infant is a grandson of Dr J H Clark of Winter Park Florida, formerly of Connersville.
Local residents and farmers attend the Rush County Rural Electric Membership Corporation meeting at Rushville Christian church. Hubert Innis notes assets of 519,785.97 and five energized circuits totaling 389 miles. Officers and township chairs are named, with Oscar Newhouse reporting on circuit mileage and operation.
Indiana Republican editors plan their mid winter gathering in Indianapolis on March 3 with Governor Bricker of Ohio as principal speaker. Bricker’s Topeka speech spurred six potential platform planks on spending relief and foreign policy drawing national attention.
Mr and Mrs Walter Phelps received word from Dr and Mrs W S Coleman in Malaya. The Colemans are spending two months in Java after traveling from Ceylon. The Phelps also heard from Mr and Mrs Howard E Henley enjoying warm Florida sunshine.
Mrs. Ella Gurley of Charlottesville was injured when she became dizzy and fell at her home Sunday evening. She received a badly sprained hip and is being cared for by Mrs. Maude Stewart who is staying with her.
January real estate activity in Rush County shows 35 transfers totaling 31 065 dollars. Most entries list one dollar with other considerations. Anderson township saw the largest sale at 15 000 dollars. One local transfer involved Samuel L Newsom et al releasing and quit claiming interests in multiple Carthage properties and Ripley township land.
James Everson of New Palestine died at his home Saturday at 8 a m after suffering a stroke earlier. He had been hospitalized in Indianapolis at St Vincent's for three weeks. Everson married Marie Strahorn of Carthage and was known to Carthage residents. Mr and Mrs John Benson attended the funeral Monday afternoon.
Regional Peace Institute convenes at Carthage Friends Church on Thursday March 2 with Bishop Paul Jones among speakers. Afternoon and evening sessions will cover economic causes of war and Christian responses, featuring Dr. Homer Morris Dr. David Sonquist Warren Mullin and others. Attendance open to the public with cooperative support from twenty Friends churches.
On Friday at two o'clock the World Fellowship of Prayer will be observed as a union service at Fletcher M. E. church in Carthage. Mrs Murray Kenworthy chairs the program with help from members of other churches. The public is invited. The service is part of Lent World observances with prayers scripture reading music and hymns.
The Ripley Township Historical Society held its annual meeting February 20 at the Henry Henley Public Library with 29 members and guests. Ed Arnott of Indianapolis spoke on termites and W. H. Montgomery showcased old coverlets. the Carthage grade school band performed. Officers for 1939 were re elected: Henry L. Stenger president, Ellen Mellvaine first vice president, Jesse Henley second vice president, Mabel P. Hedgecock secretary treasurer, Jess e Henley curator, Sarah E. Newby historian, plus advisory members. Jack Carr joined as a member. total active members reach 74 with 13 honorary members. Dues are 50 cents for the season, 1.00 for new members.
Mr and Mrs Grant Henley and Mr and Mrs H O Pitts attended the district meeting of rural route carriers in Elwood on Wednesday.
