Mr. Bayard Baker spoke about Lincoln at the Carthage school on Thursday morning and to the Fortnightly Historical Club at Knightstown in the afternoon. He also addressed the Kiwanis Club in Pendleton on Thursday night.
Postal installations will observe a legal holiday on Saturday February 22 with no mail in or out that day. Lobby open but no window service. Community notices list several local residents and clergy receiving hospital care or recovering from surgery and amputations with brief room locations.
Born Thursday a son was born to Mr and Mrs Max Whitfield in a local birth announcement.
Gary R. Siler of Carthage serves as president of Platt Hall and the Inter-Dorm Council at Tri-State College Angola Indiana. He studies Motor Transportation Administration in the School of Business Administration as the college, founded in 1884, grants Bachelor of Science degrees in engineering and business.
Arthur L. Callahan chief aviation electrician's mate USN and son of Mrs Bertha M Callahan of Mays Indiana was promoted January 16 while stationed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River Maryland. The station hosts the Navy Test Pilot School and develops carrier based aircraft testing.
Richard Cole and Sons of Carthage have been elected to membership in the American Angus Association at St. Joseph Missouri. They were among 34 Indiana breeders of registered Aberdeen Angus elected to membership in the past month.
The schedule lists Friday games in Decatur County with Milroy at Jackson Township Triton at Charlottesville Greenfield at Morristown New Salem at Carthage Morton at Arlington Straughn at Mays Manilla at Clarksburg and Saturday match Muncie Burris at Rushville.
In week 6 games Jeffersonville edged Morrstown 78 74 while Pendleton topped Cadiz 66 Mays posted 90 against Cadiz 66 Triton 71 beat Arlington 61 Burney 96 fell to Morton 55 New Salem 87 defeated Charlottesville 77 in overtime New Salem then crushed Clarksburg 61 Wednesday night action highlighted by the late OT thriller.
Raiders suffer two defeats as the sectional draw provides a break in their path. Centerville game details unclear in OCR but the team faces a shuffled sectional bracket with new opportunities ahead.
World Day of Prayer was observed last Friday afternoon at the Methodist Church with a small attendance. Roy Stanley gave the scripture reading and delivered the 1964 theme Let Us Pray. A quartet from the high school sang Bless This House and I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked with Mrs. Sue Ann Land at the piano. An offering supported Home Missions and the Division of Foreign Missions of the National Council of Churches.
Wilkinson edges Carthage 28 31 with standout performances by McCord and Hill. Carthage center Larry Jordan contributed 28 points on 13 field goals and 2 free throws, but could not overcome Wilkinson’s late surge after Hill returned in the second half. Carthage second team fell 48 31 as the Raiders drifted behind early and never recovered.
Milroy captured the southern crown by defeating Carthage 55 to 35 in a Saturday affair. Center Hall led the winners with 26 points on 11 field goals and 4 free throws as Milroy raced to a 19-6 first quarter and controlled the game thereafter. Carthage was led by Matlock with 11 and Finch with 8, but could not match Hall’s scoring pace.
Carthage Grain Co. announces a two day Farmer's Day celebration on February 28 and 29 with free offerings and gifts. The event invites local farmers and neighbors to participate during the weekend.
The Rushville sectional features February 26 matchups Charlottesville against Manilla and New Salem versus Arlington. February 27 offers Morristown vs Rushville and Mays vs Milroy. February 28 brings Morton against Carthage and the two early winners. February 29 runs a sequence of winners games 3 4 5 6 7 and 8 and culminates in the final pairings.
Mrs. Ralph Mosier entertained the Twice Four Bridge Club at her home last Thursday evening with honors going to Mrs. Ralph Moore, Mrs. Wilbur McCorkle and Mrs. Ethel Graf of Cincinnati. Other guests included Mrs. Lindley Taylor, Mrs. Forrest Beck, Mrs. Delmer Sipes and Mrs. Markes McClurg. Refreshments were served.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ruby returned to Carthage after a month in Florida visiting Naples Ft. Myers Beach and the east coast. They were joined by friends including Noah Leisure Mary Masters Lowell Ruby and family Don Patterson and family. They attended the Southwestern Florida Fair in Ft. Myers and saw other notable sights during the trip.
Mrs. Pearl Kennedy, 80, died after a month's illness at Rush Memorial Hospital. She was a Rush County native who lived most of her life in the area. Survived by two daughters Mrs. Margaret Hopkins and Mrs. Lucille Brosius both of Knightstown, a son Ralph of Ritman Ohio, two brothers Bevin and Delmar, seven great grandchildren and three grandchildren. Services Thursday at 2 p.m. at Butcher Funeral Home Knightstown with Rev. Norman Peer officiating. Burial in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Former Senator Homer Capehart will be the speaker at the Lincoln Day banquet hosted by the Church of Christ in Rushville. The event follows a church reception at the bride’s home in Cincinnati and couples Lawrence Tatman and Judith Former Senator Capehart’s grandson’s wedding.
At Friday convocation Larry Jordan Eldon Jackson and Cliff Akers received blue award jackets with white leather sleeves for long hours of practice Marilyn Pitts earned a Carthage blanket for four years of varsity cheerleading Cindy Brooks got a gold megaphone pendant for three years in band boosters award night featured a brief meeting and benediction. The senior band members receiving sweaters for four years include Cynthia Brooks Carol Ann Ellis Lynn Kennedy Sue Leisure Cheryl Magee Cynthia Marilyn Pitts Patty ane Stanley Stephen Marshall Patterson. Patricia Sipes won a gold pin as majorette. Test results for grades three to eight will be interpreted for all students after scores are compiled and ready. Sectional tournament at Rushville gym February 26–29 runs schedule and ticket details with bans on loud gear and photography. Carthage plays Morton at 7:00 Friday.
A Hancock Circuit Court ruling favors Rush County over Henry County efforts to annex a mile square area into the Beard Memorial School Corporation. The decision blocks Henry County from taxing property in Rush County for Beard schools and cites lack of joint Rush-Henry action and improper notices.
Mr and Mrs Randy McClurg of Muncie were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Markes McClurg. John White visited Arthur Brunson near Willow Branch. Frank Hampton and children hosted Lowell Brown and family Sunday. Harry Liebrandt of Greenfield visited their daughter and family Bob Nigh. Russell Siler and daughters hosted Carl Carson Sr Carl Carson Jr and sons for wedding anniversaries. Esta Fenner spent Tuesday with Nettie Kuhn in Indianapolis.
George D. Edington of R. R. 1 Laurel Indiana died at 11 30 a m at the Tenth Street Veterans Hospital Indianapolis Thursday. Friends may call at the Hampton Mortuary after Saturday noon. Services will be held at 2 00 p m Sunday at the Mortuary. Burial to be made in Town Cemetery.
Director Donald E Foltz announced the trapping season for fur bearing animals ends at noon January 31 1964 under Discretionary Order No 99 and lasts until September 1 1965. He notes confusion over running coon dogs but says only 15 days before open season is illegal to run dogs.
