The Carthage Citizen Expansion Campaign enters the final two days as contestants race to secure the most subscriptions and votes for cash prizes up to $300. Candidates urge decisive action, stressing the near finish and the need to outwork rivals before Saturday’s close.
Principal J. R. Behr says no school for the rest of the week due to coal shortage. Schools across Indiana shut down. Ripley will resume Monday unless notified otherwise.
An American Home Council meeting in Rushville brought together Federated clubs and the Home Economics club. Speakers included Mrs. Fred Ball on the aims of American Home, Miss Wilma Fike on home finance, and Mrs. Charles Fisher on recreation. Afternoon talks covered home lighting and the Federal Housing Administration with community singing and music provided by local contributors.
Clarence Jackson and his son slid down an icy hill near Carthage. The truck hit a bridge abutment and Jackson jumped out to avoid a rollover but was crushed between the vehicle and the abutment. Three fingers were amputated after severe freezing. It took three hours to free the truck.
Captain Donald W. Benner of Mays is one of three Indiana pilots chosen for the largest mass flight by U S Army planes from Brownsville Texas to the Panama Canal Zone. Twenty four bombing and pursuit planes will travel about nineteen hundred miles around February 21. Major Guy B. Hertherson of Gary will pilot a pursuit plane while Capt. George C. Macnair of Clinton and Capt. Benner will command bombing planes.
Reports show 18 port-of-entry permits issued by the State Alcoholic Beverages commission. Under the 1933 law ten importers were allowed. the 1935 rewrite removed a cap, permitting up to 100 permits. Many applicants were denied, but existing importers retained their positions.
The message thanks Mr. Henry Stinger, management and employers of the paper mill, business houses and individuals for support of a benefit dance. Proceeds benefitted the school cafeteria with receipts of 39.00 dollars. Disbursements total 19.50 after music 12.50 and hall 7.00, balance to cafeteria.

Ripley Township Historical Society met at Henry Henley Library on Lincoln's birth day. Thirty five members five honorary members and eight guests attended. Henry Stinger re elected president and officers. Papers on pioneer families early customs and town history were presented. The society noted 15 exhibits filed by five contributors and will preserve papers for future generations.
County clerk Dale Fisher warns voters to return form 14 for suspension of registration and complete the form with precinct and township. The 30 day return window is closing. Transfers between precincts must be done by April 6, 1936. New voters turning 21 before November may vote if registered by April 6.
Funeral services were conducted for William H Tyner Monday afternoon at his home near Fountaintown with Rev Herschel M Reed of Greenfield officiating. Interment was in Asbury cemetery, he passed away at his home last Friday morning around eight o'clock.
The Home Economics club scheduled to meet with Mrs Rus sell Publow has been postponed indefinitely.
Thirty four members paid their second annual dues and all who wish to remain members are urged to leave fifty cents at the Bank with Mrs. Mable Hedgecock. The relics added include Handheld Boot Jack Loop Jack Saddlebags and various tools and hardware.
Postmaster Sam McCarty announced the post office will close after nine o clock Saturday evening February 22 in honor of George Washingtons birthday.
Rushville area farmer Hubert R Alexander announces candidacy for Rush County Auditor on the Republican ticket He is a World War veteran and serves as a precinct committeeman He belongs to the Masonic lodge and the Methodist church He comes from a five generation Republican family.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Gates in Milroy was damaged inside by a Sunday fire traced to the flue. Milroy fire department and volunteers extinguished the blaze. All household goods were saved, but substantial interior damage occurred.
Miss Betty DeSchipper of Carthage is named among 28 Indiana University women invited this week into the Women's Athletic Association at Bloomington. Coeds chosen for membership have distinguished themselves in women's sports.
Contractors working on the Carthage waterworks have drilled three holes without finding water. They moved equipment to Henley heirs’ ground east of the saw mill and by Wednesday noon had reached twenty feet in the fourth borehole.
The Friendly Circle of Friends church sponsors an Amateur Hour to be presented at the auditorium on Friday evening February 28. Watch for the names of the amateurs in next week's Citizen.

Carthage Bluebirds beat Arlington 32 23 in a Tuesday night home game postponed from Friday due to ice. Coach Schultz's team moved to 2 0 against Arlington this season and will defend the Horseshoe trophy won at the county tourney. Carthage led 9 2 after one, 19 7 at halftime, and 28 9 in the third as Arlington narrowed the gap late.
A J Carr announces Republican bid for joint state senator nomination representing Rush Shelby and Fayette counties in the May 5 primary. He is vice president of Geo W Swift Jr Corp and active in Ripley township politics. He previously sought the joint representative nomination for Rush and Henry counties.

Mrs. E B Price, 86, died February 12 at the Terre Haute home of her daughter Mrs C L Swartz. Funeral services were held in Terre Haute last Friday with her daughter Mrs Frank Overman in attendance. She leaves eleven children and a husband. three of the children had preceded her in death.
In Greenfield a horse collapsed on an icy street and could not rise. An automobile hoist was used to lift the animal to its feet for the first time in local history.
