Colder weather aids refugees in flood districts of southern Ohio and Indiana while the Ohio River crests on Wednesday. Government specialists note slight receding readings as they monitor the disaster across five states.
A state house debate centers on a proposed flat $1 license plate fee for passenger cars. Proponents argue the extra 1 cent gas tax would offset the loss, while critics note road wear linked to actual use and recall the system’s early history dating to 1905.
Rush County trustees led by Superintendent Charles DeMunbrun plan inspections of county schools on February 14 and 17. The first day will visit New Salem Richland Milroy Webb Homer Manilla and likely Arlington. the second day starts at Glenwood and visits Ging Raleigh Mays Carthage and Jackson.
Lawrence Carter will deliver the morning message at Fletcher Methodist Church for a Lincoln Sunday service honoring Lincoln's birthday. The Rev. R. H. Myers invites all to attend the 10 20 a m ceremony where Carter speaks on Lincoln as president and emancipator.
Mrs. Donald Ruby and Mrs. Edgar V. Ruby attended the S. and E. directors meeting and covered dish luncheon at the home of Mrs. Ed Frazee in Rushville on Friday.
Revival meetings at Walnut Ridge Friends church report good attendance across all services. Evening gatherings begin at 7 00 p m instead of 7 30 p m as announced last week.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier welcomed an eight pound son, James Warren, born Monday afternoon February 6.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Davis of Ripley township announce the birth of a daughter born February 4. The baby has been named Patricia Gale.
The Carthage Blue Raiders lost to Westland 17 to 15 in overtime after a tight game. Westland edged ahead with a late field goal by Willis as Ab Tuttle Whitfield Webb and Roberts defended well. The local seconds also fell 17 to 6.
Ripley Township Historical Society announces a moved meeting date to February 20 at the library basement. A 6:30 pitch-in supper precedes a program featuring a collection of old coverlets by W H Montgomery and a Ed Arnott talk on mites, plus a choral performance. Dues of 50 cents and a $1.00 membership fee are due.
Funeral rites were held for Joyce Anna Belle Gurley 18 at Thompson Funeral Home in Carthage. The service was conducted by Rev. Robert H. Myers with singing by Mrs. Frank Overman and Mrs. Robert Spangler. Burial followed at Walnut Ridge. Gurley, born December 30, 1920, was daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gurley and had lived with grandparents near Charlottesville since age three. She attended Carthage High School until last fall. Survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gurley of Carthage, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Levi Gurley of Charlottesville, one sister Jean and one brother Gerald.
Mrs. Tom McClurg of South Walnut street suffered a severe cut to her left leg when struck by a pole and wire around noon Tuesday. She received stitches at Dr. George B. McNabb’s office.
M. S. Kenworthy pastor of the Friends church read a paper on Religion and Peace at the Rush County Ministerial Association meeting in the Rushville library. Wayne Newcum also attended the February meeting held Monday at ten o clock.
Swine thieves took eleven Poland China hogs from the Lon Rhodes farm northeast of Mays Monday night weighing about 90 pounds each. Sheriff Paul Bennington investigated but found no trace. this marks the third hog theft in the county in two weeks.
A daughter named Anne was born February 3 at Episcopal Hospital Philadelphia to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ustick. She is the great grandchild of the late Daniel and Phoebe N. Newsom and grandchild of Pennina Newsom Bryant and the late Herman C. Bryant.
Births outpace deaths countywide with 26 arrivals to 23 deaths. Townships show 14 deaths to 11 births while Rushville records 15 births and 9 deaths. Read lists name newborns in Ripley Evelyn Ann to Jackson Fern Elizabeth Herbert and Rushville entries.
Ted Brooks leaves his operator job at the Auditorium Theatre to join Zimmerman Trucking in Muncie and Pittsburgh. Rayburn Fitch is named to fill the former operator position at the Auditorium Theatre.
Ripley township 4 H club girls participated in the county achievement day at the Graham Annex auditorium Rushville. The Needletwisters club presented a playset highlighting 4 H aims and work with awards, trips to Purdue round-up, national contest pins, and 100 percent club scores announced by the county Home Economics board.
Mrs. Laura Rebecca Newkirk VanDament widow of Joseph VanDament and mother of Dr. W T VanDament of Bloomington, a former Carthage physician, died at her daughter Mrs Jesse Gilson's Knightstown home. Funeral was held at Gilson residence at 1 pm Wednesday, with interment in East Hill Cemetery Rushville.
Edgar N. Hill visits Knightstown then heads to Pasadena California. Howard E. Henley and sister Mrs Murray Hadley travel from Indianapolis to Miami Florida to visit Ida S Henley. S L Newsom and Miss Winona Newsom depart for Aiken South Carolina then New Orleans for Mardi Gras and on to California. Newsom party plans a three month trip with stops at Hollywood Florida and Miami.
Francis Dyer was removed to the home of his parents near Arlington from the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis. A cast from his hip has been removed, indicating recovery from an injury.
