Mrs Velma Todd underwent surgery at Rush Memorial Hospital last Thursday. Oran Henley continues to convalesce at home. Mrs Maude Porter is slowly recovering from major surgery at Robert Long Hospital. Stanley Hawkins returned home from major surgery at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr and Mrs David Ray remain the same at their Carthage home. Mrs Winifred Gray and Mrs W A Spence are recovering from major surgery or in similar condition at rural or local hospitals.

State Contest Opens For Original Chicken Recipe Entries

Mays Milroy Contest Winners Named in Forestry Judging
In Rush County the 4H and FFA Forestry Judging Contest on February 1 at the County Court House saw Mays team of Garvey and Fred Smith take first with 638 points. Milroy High placed second with 558, coached by Rolla Hendrickson. individual high scorer was Fred Smith with 350. Other schools in attendance included Rushville and New Salem. ribbons were sponsored by local stone companies. A forestry contest will be held in New Castle on April 25 with district forester Newt Liming directing.

The Carthage High School spelling team earned top honors at the Rush County event held in Manilla Monday evening. Jerry Dixon won the 5th and 6th grade division as Kim Tweedy took the Division I junior high title with Arlene Ruby finishing as runner up among high school contestants from Rush County.

District Solo Ensemble Contest Excites Local High School

Carthage Chapter No. 574 CBS held joint inspection with Martha Poe Chapter No. 143 and Milroy Chapter No. 471 at Rushville Friday evening. Worthy Grand Matron Helen S. Garriott of Indianapolis and Worthy Grand Patron Ivan R. Bridgewater of North Vernon made their official visit. Dinner by Main Street Christian Church served seventy people including all grand and chapter officers. Traveling Bible ceremony followed by Baby dedication. Martha Poe Chapter opened and welcomed visiting officers. Milroy Chapter performed initiation with Carthage Chapter closing. About 200 present from 30 chapters.

Rites Held For Elizabeth Barry
Elizabeth Ann Barry 73 died 11 35 a m Sunday in Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis after a long illness. She lived near Charlottesville and had moved from Owosso Michigan to Rush County 18 years ago. Born February 6 1890 south of Carthage she married Milton Barry in 1911 who survives along with two sons Gale and Lawrence and six grandchildren. A son Earle died earlier. Services 2 p m Tuesday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with burial at Oak Grove Owosso.

A five team junior high tournament runs Thursday and Saturday at Arlington gym. Thursday night at 7 Manilla faces Morton, and Saturday morning Carthage meets Mays while Arlington plays the Thursday winner at 9 15. Morning winners meet for the trophy at 2 p.m. Morton is the defending champ. Officials are Bob Wells and Jim Wright. Admission 50 cents adults 25 cents children.
