Mr and Mrs Jack Tweedy of Carthage welcomed a daughter named Kile Elizabeth born Wednesday afternoon December 27 at Rush Memorial Hospital. The newborn weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces.
Carthage Post Office workers and spouses gathered at the Durbin Hotel Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. Christmas dinner. After meals they enjoyed cards, and Postmaster William Alexander received a gift. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Noah Brooks, Ralph Mosier, Charles Whitfield, Fred Flick, William Alexander, Joe Porter, and Carl Carson Jr.
Mrs Elmer Hunt hosted an oyster supper on Christmas Eve with guests Ida Jessup Ma mie Jessup and Walter Jessup of Charlottesville and Daniel David and Sarah Jane Hunt of Carthage R R Mr and Mrs Sharon Hunt and family joined for Tuesday evening supper.
Mrs. Alice Fletcher becomes Den Mother for Den 1 and oversees a skit titled The Chipmunks. Three boys will sing with Harry Nigh as Alvin Eddie Fletcher as Simon and Danny Mourey as Theodore serving as Den Reporter.
Roy Blessinger and Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Blessinger with their son from Carthage left last Saturday for a week long visit with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Blessinger in Tampa Florida.
Mr and Mrs Delmar Sipes and daughter Patricia returned to Carthage Wednesday afternoon after an eight day trip to Jacksonville Florida where they visited Mrs Marshall Monk and Mr Monk, the Sipes family sister and daughter.
Mrs. Elmer Hunt hosted the annual Christmas breakfast at her home west of Carthage. Thirty five family members attended and eighteen guests joined Mrs. Hunt for Christmas dinner.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Moore of Marion announce the birth of a daughter named Vickie Sue weighing 6 pounds 5 ounces. She was born on Tuesday December 26 at Marion Hospital and is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Parish of Carthage and Mrs. Mollie Moore of Spiceland.
Jim Ellis Jr of Carthage and Butler University plays trumpet this week with the orchestra at the Zaring Theater Indianapolis in the smash hit musical comedy stage show The Boy Friend.
Jesse O. Mourey a 65 year old factory worker and Carrie A. Bramel a 67 year old housewife obtained a marriage license.
John E. Meek and R. R. J. Milroy will assume office Monday succeeding Newton Halterman who completed two terms. Meek was elected in November 1960 but will begin after a one year layover. Other Rush County commissioners are Elmer Perkins of Manilla and Clarence Newhouse for the northern district.
The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce reports that Indiana residents will work 108 days in 1962 to cover tax costs, with April 18 as the key date. The 1962 calendar notes that about 29.7 percent of personal income goes to federal, state, and local taxes, requiring 108 days of earnings.
Christmas Day and weekend gatherings spread through Rush, Frankton, Knightstown, Indianapolis, and more. Families hosted relatives from Muncie, Carmel, Greenfield, and beyond for turkey dinners, gift exchanges, and music activities. Linda Yarling plans Miami Bowl performances with the Ben Davis School band.
Harvey Arnold Jr of Union township is the new Rush County Corn King in the 1961 Rush County Corn and Farm Products Show. Diana Stanley of Center township is Corn Princess, with Arnold earning best ten ears of corn and the top honors in the open show. The event drew 210 exhibits including 4H and open classes, with many reserve awards and sweepstakes titles awarded to multiple exhibitors across divisions.
The Hancock County 4H and FFA Forestry Contest was held December 14 at Memorial Building Greenfield. Four teams from three schools competed. Charlottesville coached by Lee Patton won the team title with 570 points. Individual top scorers included Dan Bowman and Jeff Glascock tied at 280 points.
The Rush County Sheep Committee led by John R. White announces five Lamb Pools from June to October with a Gold Medal Lamb and 4 H lamb tour on June 4. A judge and superintendents for the Sheep Department and Gold Medal Lamb Club are named, and John White and Hugh Webb receive key postings.
Grand and petit juries for the January term were drawn by the jury commissioners. The lists include 12 grand jurors and 24 petit jurors with names and addresses across Rushville Rushville Milroy Manilla Carthage Fal mouth Waldron and other townships. The term opens New Year Day with court sessions to begin the following day.

Marine Pvt. Darrel D. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Davis of Carthage Indiana, completed 12 weeks of recruit training December 12 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Par ris Island. He will report to Camp Lejeune North Carolina for combat infantry training.
The Carthage High School Vocational Agriculture Department will start its series of adult farmer classes on Wednesday night January 3, 1962 at 7 30 p m in the high school vocational agriculture room. Any farmer or person interested in agriculture is invited to attend. The theme this year is Animal Nutrition and Improving Crop Yields with outside speakers planned to enhance informativeness.
January 1 deadline set for 4-H enrollment with beef sheep sow litter and dairy programs. Enrollment cards available from seven Rush County high school vocational agriculture teachers and the County Extension Office in the Courthouse. Return cards to the local 4H leader or extension office by January 1.
The Magee family hosted a Christmas Eve dinner at the Community Center with forty five attendees. Attendees included Mrs Ella Howard Mr and Mrs Maine Magee and family Mr and Mrs Ferris Magee and children Mr and Mrs Raymond Muir and children Mr and Mrs Gene Strong and son Mr and Mrs Fred Magee and three sons Mr and Mrs L O Plank and children Mr and Mrs Ronald Magee Mr and Mrs Jess Howard and children Mr and Mrs Tom Gorman and children E/4 Thomas Gorman of Quantico Virginia Tina Sparks Mr and Mrs Dover Webber and Clarence Magee.

Total giving for all purposes reached 47,122,000, up 1,772,000 from 1960, as membership rose to 326,870. World membership surpassed 382,000 with 55,000 in foreign lands and 4,775 churches planned by Jan 1, 1962.
Joseph Harlan Stephens 59 of Carthage died at Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis at 9 30 a m last Thursday after two years of poor health He worked at Containers Corporation of America Carthage plant Born May 4 1902 in Lewis County Kentucky he married Mollie Wells January 1 1922 She survives He leaves a son Eddie Stephens a stepson Roy Caudill seven grandchildren and three sisters and three brothers The Rev Cecil West led services at 3 p m Saturday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage burial in Town Cemetery Carthage
Mrs. Lallie Edwards age 56 of Indianapolis died unexpectedly last Friday at home. Services were Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Conkle Funeral Home Indianapolis with burial at Cicero Indiana. She was sister to Mrs. Wilbur McCorkle of Carthage. Immediate survivors include two daughters Mrs. Mary Chittenden Nooks Texas and Mrs. Joan Collins Indianapolis a son James Gillahan Lawrence several grandchildren her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Donoho Indianapolis two sisters Mrs. McCorkle and Mrs. Jorothy Clause Indianapolis and two brothers Paul Donoho California and Frank Donoho Indianapolis.
Mr and Mrs Earl Nigh hosted a large family Christmas dinner with relatives visiting from Knightstown Greenfield Ft Wayne Carthage and other towns. Several gatherings occurred Christmas Eve and Day with unions between Ed wards Overman Terhune Gardner Bash and many others plus visits from Purdue University and Chanute Air Force Base communities.
