Carthage merchants shut their shops Saturday night early for Christmas Eve and stay open until 8 p m on Friday. All close Monday for the holiday. The Post Office runs Saturday afternoon to 5 p m and then closes Monday with no rural delivery. The State Bank also closes Monday for the holiday.

Byron Hiner of Center Township topped the Rush County 5 Acre Soybean Yield Contest with an average of 51.5 bushels per acre and will receive a rose gold medal. Everett P. Rush County highway trucks logged 5,216 miles in a week as eight trucks operated to keep roads passable after last Sunday's sleet and snow. Supervisor Wendell Hester noted the crew spread 150 tons of sand 130 bags of salt and 30 loads of cinders donated by Container Corporation at Carthage.

Mary Sattler Dietz 91 of Lawrenceburg Indiana died Friday December 16 at Batesville Hospital after several years of illness. She left two daughters Gertrude Sparks Muncie and Elizabeth Ogden Lawrenceburg and two brothers Joseph Sattler South Bend and Mr Sattler Carthage. Funeral services were held in Lawrenceburg December 19 with burial at Brookville Indiana.
