Treasury Department raids across the country led to the arrest of more than eight hundred individuals in a major blow against illicit drugs. The report notes financial moves, including a $75,000,000 182 day bill offering, and outlines positions in Congress and the military regarding defense and aviation.
The Treasury Department drafts a bill to Congress proposing a uniform bank examination system. Katherine Lenroot, head of the children’s bureau, estimates 3 million youths ages 16 to 21 are out of school or out of work. The President allocates 10 million dollars more for land purchases, adding to 20 million set aside in 1933 for 6 million acres of forest land. Lewis W. Douglas resigns as Director of the Budget and is chosen as vice president of a major chemical company.
Currency in circulation at the start of December stood at 5 548 797 000 dollars, below the previous year's level. The decline is attributed to growing confidence in banking institutions, which reduced hoarding and the overall money in circulation.
A large crowd attended the minstrel show staged by local business men at the Auditorium Theatre on Wednesday night. Bayard Baker directed the cast of community actors. the performance featured instrumental and vocal music and scenes by Clingstone Orin Miller and Humphrey Harold Ruby. Proceeds totaled 106.70 dollars to fund a Christmas party for township children.
Mrs Susan Addison Miss Virginia McBride and Mr Ray Addison were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Blaine Addison of Knightstown.
John Addison, about sixty one, formerly of this place and now living near Fortville, was found last Friday morning about 8 near Ingalls between two railroad tracks. He was en route to school and died in a region with double tracks. Survived by sister Miss Gertrude Addison of Indianapolis and brother Eula Addison north of here. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 pm from McCarty Funeral Home Fortville with the Christian church minister in charge. Burial followed in the town cemetery.
The town held planning at McCarty’s Drug Store for holiday events. A large Christmas tree in the public square will be lit with colored lights and a program led by Wirs. Pickett at 7:30 p.m. on Friday includes church and school chorus, with a children’s party Monday at the Auditorium Theatre from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Santa will attend. A school program is scheduled Friday at 1:30 p.m.
No school Friday morning. At 1:30 p m a special program of carols will be held in the school auditorium featuring all grades and the high school glee club. Mr Donald Stoten is ill with chicken pox and Mrs Mary Jessup recovers from appendicitis. Mr Roy Newby returns home from Methodist Hospital and improves. Several children and families report whooping cough, including Patricia Billy Mary Lu, Alexander, Barbara Addison, Donald Stoten Jr, and Caroline Sue Tetrick.
The Sunshine Circle elected officers including President Helen Ruby and Vice President Flossie Jessup at a Wednesday gathering with 26 members and one guest Mrs. Carl Weidner. The next meeting is planned for January with Grace Phelps and others assisting.
The Ripley Township Historical Society lists Charter Members and officers for a basement library home. Special Week of Prayer union services run December 30 through January 6 at several churches with nightly 7pm programs. Ministers include Rev. Glover Rev. Schoolfield Dr. Furbay and speaker rotates among Friends Wesleyan Methodist Christian Fletcher M E churches. The goal is a united deepening of town religious life under the theme The Meaning of Christianity for Today.
The public schools chorus under Mrs. Ramona Pickett presented a Christmas cantata at Friends Church last Sunday with white robed choir, a nativity scene, and prayers led by Rev. Schoolfield and Rev. Furbay. A 7:06 Bible Study and Friday practice preceded next Sunday's Christmas services featuring a Modern Quest for the Christ and a vesper program with needy gift offerings. Citizens may donate to a community Christmas basket via Sunday white gifts.
East St. Christian Church schedules a Sunday 8:00 p.m. program featuring a pagent When the King Was Born and a candle scene. The church will collect white gifts of food and clothing for local needy, aiming for at least eight food baskets. Donations also support the Christmas Home for Orphans in Cleveland, with a large offering encouraged.
The pastor will preach on What Christmas Ought to Mean to Christians. Morning worship starts with Bible Study at 9 30. A Christmas party is planned for Friday night with a pageant rehearsal just before. The Bible Training Class grows in interest with active participation. no meeting until January 7 due to Christmas and Week of Prayer.
The Fletcher ME Church outlines Christmas activities with rehearsals Wednesday and Thursday after school. Mid week worship Thursday 7 00 PM, choir 7 30 PM. Friday night hosts Friendship class and young people social. Sunday services at 9 30 AM and 10 35 AM feature Star Trails to the Christ Child and a full Christmas program Sunday night at 7 00 PM with a Santa Claus. robed choir expected both morning and evening.
A second fox drive is planned near the Hannegan Christian church on Thursday December 27 following a successful prior event. Participants meet at 9:00 AM and travel to the lines. no guns or dogs allowed and a cafeteria lunch will be served at noon for participants, especially school children.
Notice states transportation to Hannegan Fox Drive for all Boy Scouts meeting at the Scout Master’s home by 8 15 am on December 27. Each Scout may bring two guests and should meet Monday morning December 24 at Carr's office to help distribute Christmas baskets.
The Fletcher M. E. church group held a meeting with Mrs. Sarah Stager last Thursday welcoming Mrs Claude Sipe as a new member. Membership has almost doubled since September 1. The program featured "Music and the Message" and "Music and Christianity" with Mrs Behr and Mrs Schoolfield leading discussions.
