In a casual column a reader recalls sidewalk photographers banished by public safety. He admits enjoying their candid snaps and describes being photographed himself with humor about his own groggy, unflattering look. The piece ends noting a continuation on page six.
Thomas Newsom aged 74 died at his Anderson home. He was born in Rush County and lived much of his life in Carthage before moving to Anderson six years ago. He is survived by his widow and two sons Wayman and Elba of Anderson. Burial took place in Carthage Cemetery.
Mayor James L. Allen appoints Nelson Watson as Greenfield Fire Department chief in 1936. Watson, longtime member with a strong record, will lead the department for the first time.
Churches in Carthage will unite for a week of prayer from Sunday December 29 to Sunday January 5. Announcement notes speakers to be announced next week.
State Police inspected all county school buses last Monday and Tuesday under a state law. Inspections covered brakes lights exits extinguishers cleanliness heating and driver health clearances from licensed physicians. Buses were checked by township and high school locations across Milroy Gings Mas Homer Rushville and other townships.
William Poo and Mrs Dorne Macarthage pleaded guilty in circuit court to child neglect. Poo received six months at the state penal farm and a $100 fine. Jo John A. Ker piers reported others accused of improper associations with children faced suspended sentences with promises of proper child care in the future.
A B and O passenger train struck a truck trailer loaded with eggs at the Third street crossing in Rushville last Wednesday evening. The trailer, owned by Western Trucking, was overturned after the impact, eggs scattered, and the driver escaped injury. Value of the eggs was listed as undetermined.
Mrs Ida Benbow found Mr and Mrs David Strough in their home after a two week illness from gas fumes. A physician treated them and fresh air revived the couple. The doctor said they would have died within an hour if not discovered.
Next Sunday the churches of Carthage will collect food for baskets to aid underprivileged families. The effort is conducted unitedly by the churches and invites everyone to bring items to their own church next Sunday.
The county corn show runs January 7 and 28 in the Court House with extra program events. Home Economics clubs present matinees Thursday and Friday afternoons free to the public. Talks by Miss Lella Gadis and Keller Beeson accompany the exhibit. Township winners in seed selection are listed for Washington, Union, Ripley, Walker, MeMynus, Noble, Carter, Posey and more, with Stanley Meal of Orange township crowned county champion across all years.
Drilling for oil and gas showed renewed activity in November with work in fifteen counties. Major expansion in Busseron township Knox county and in Perry county where a discovery gas well was completed two months ago. A 75 barrel oil well was brought in Gibson county in the past month.
In Carthage during the first week of auto license plate sales about 90 plates were issued. The state reports 165 bureaus selling licenses. New plates feature cream and sien colors and require state issued title certificates. Male applicants 21 to 50 must present a poll tax receipt. Buy before December 31 deadline.
Mrs Luther White aged 57 died at her Knightstown home Sunday morning after prolonged illness. She had recently been in Indianapolis hospital for treatment and stayed with family for six weeks. She was born Henry County to John and Sarah Anderson and married Luther White. Survived by husband two sisters Elvy and Nora Mattix of Carthage and a brother Herbert Anderson near Carthage. Funeral at her home last Tuesday with interment at Glencove near under Dunn.
The Farm Credit Administration reports a $9.188 million refunding of Louisville bonds into a $100 million consolidated issue cutting interest. The move raises annual savings to $793,000 for the land bank system, with $13 million in callable bonds remaining before 1939. James K. Mason and Randolph Core named local and district directors for three-year terms beginning 1936, ex officio on other farm credit bodies.
The Carthage Bluebirds defeated the Manilla Owls 30 to 29 in a protested game at Milroy court after an official scorekeeper raised the final tally from 28 to 30. Fans and players believed Manilla won as the clock expired, but the official decision credited Carthage with the victory despite controversy. The team requested fair wins and notes a game with Westland to follow in the next issue.
Norius Heathcock, colored, died at his home north of Carthage at 8 30 Thursday morning after a two week illness. Born in North Carolina November 28 1848 he moved to Rush county in 1869 and resided there since. He was a member of the Market Street Christian church. Survivors include his widow seven children and several grandchildren. Funeral was held Sunday at the Market Street Christian church with interment in Knightstown cemetery.
Two Greenfield youths Ralph Banker and Chet Ballinger were stopped by Indianapolis police Monday night after a reported hold up at a filling station. Taken to the scene, rough handling occurred before the attendant identified them as not the suspects. They were released, the police apologized, and their tank was filled.
Mrs Alice Gray of the Hannegan community and Everett Mc Farland of Indianapolis wed quietly Wednesday at the home of Rev Geo Holwager. They left for a Grant county visit and will reside at the bride's home.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Moore and their family were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Fred King.
