INDIANAPOLIS December 30 a reader reflects on how broad education from parents peers and church shapes behavior. He cites a 1932 Indianapolis six member group whose varied paths measure the difficulty of predicting futures and the limits of foretelling outcomes.
The annual county tournament is scheduled for January 24 and 25 at the Rushville gymnasium with nine teams entered. Glenwood cannot participate due to lack of material, and Rushville is eliminated. Participating schools include Carthage Manilla New Salem Raleigh Arlington Milroy Morton Memorial Gings and Mays. Ernest McGraw and Leo Quillan will officiate all sessions. Mor ton Memorial and Skillman of New Salem head the executive committee with appointed subcommittees for finance schedule gym officials and ads. Tickets cost 75 cents for season and 25 cents for single sessions. The final winner will receive a trophy and the runner-up a new basketball.
Little Betty Baker from New Castle will perform with a group of girls in two shows at the Richmond theatre. The performances are scheduled for Thursday night January 2 at 7 00 and 9 00 p m. Baker is an enthusiastic tap dancer inviting the public to attend.
Mrs Mary Tarbet entertained a slumber of friends at her home on Sunday with covers laid for Mr and Mrs James Tarbet of Woods of Greenfield.
Churches in Carthage and vicinity plan a week of prayer services starting Sunday December 29 at 7 15 PM and continuing each evening except Saturday through Sunday January 5 The schedule lists speakers from Friends church M E church Walnut Ridge Friends Wesleyan Methodist and Christian church venues with Rev Wm Collier Rev Gladys Marsh Rev Herschel Reed Rev Charles Winslow Rev Carroll Miller Rev Homer Biddlesum and Rev James R Furbay urging public attendance.
Church notes urge members to attend Sunday school at 9 30 and worship at 10 30 for the Advent New Year observance. Sermon titled Let Us Keep on Going On with special music. No mid week services. Christmas programs praised as best yet with a cash and food offering to aid others.
East St. Christian Church notes Rev. Geo. Holwager is gradually improving and plans to serve again soon. No morning or evening services. 1936 Sunday school officers announced with Ora Siler as superintendent and various assistants. A junior program, Christmas trees, and gifts for pastor and family highlighted the day.
The Fletcher M E Church schedule lists Sunday School and morning worship at 9 30 with the pastor Rev Wm B Collier preaching on Closing Doors of 1935 There is no evening service this week due to the Union Week of prayer opening at the Friends church at 6 00 pm
Clyde C. Henley Jr., son of Clyde Henley Sr., and Lois Jane Bryant, daughter of Mrs. George Hanson, were married at the bride’s home on Sunday December 22. The ceremony was witnessed by close friends and relatives and the couple left for a wedding trip to Chicago.
Mrs. Belle Lisher age 72 died of pneumonia at her Shirley residence Monday evening. She and husband built the first dwelling west of Main Street and lived there 43 years. Charter member of the Christian church. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs Alta Marsh and Lisher two sons Earl Glen Vincent one granddaughter a sister Mrs Gabriel Bowman two brothers George Rafferty Shelbyville and Marshall Rafferty Fountaintown. Funeral Thursday at 2 p m at the residence by Rev Omer Hufford. Burial in McCray cemetery near Wilkinson.
Sunday evening the Carthage churches joined in prayer for redemption through God. A Christmas pageant titled Gifts of the Magi was performed last Sunday featuring the nativity and worship by Wise Men and international representatives with carols sung by the choir. Candles lit the church and a spotlight illuminated the stage.
Pastor W G Manchester leads revival meetings at Blue River Wesleyan Methodist church starting 7:00 pm each evening except Christmas Eve. Rev Manchester will speak with music by Mr and Mrs Herman Ebersole of Marion Indiana, invited guests from Marion Indiana. Parishioners urged to attend.

Officials forecast higher gross income tax returns as more than 800000 forms head to state license offices for the January 1 to 30 filing period. Individual, partnership, and corporate blanks plus 4:6 information returns will aid employers reporting 1935 earnings over 1000 dollars. Tax is based on the full year with prior quarterly payments deducted. officials anticipate more than 302000 returns last year.
The Producers Cooperative Commission Association in Cincinnati votes to refund one third of commissions to members for the year ending 1935. The refund, totaling over 50 thousand dollars, will be paid late February as livestock receipts were lighter. The year saw a 20 percent drop in total volume, hogs driving the decline, with 35 percent of Cincinnati market receipts handled by the association.
The Hannegan Christ Church reports no morning or evening services because the pastor is ill. Sunday night the church youth staged a pageant titled In Bethlehem which received favorable comment from a large crowd. The room was beautifully decorated and Christmas carols accompanied the program.
Carthage High School basketball beat Westland 24 to 23 as Cook and Norris scored late baskets to seal the victory. Carthage also defeated Westland in the prelim 28 to 14, finishing a strong season with nine wins in ten games.
A Monday fire completely wiped out Charlottesville's modern 10 room school building valued at 160000 with 68000 in insurance. Fire crews from Knights Town and Greenfield arrived too late as the flames rapidly spread, leaving one wall standing. About 200 grade and 192 high school pupils faced transfer to neighboring townships for the term.

Gerald Gosney, a Rush County musician and former band instructor, died Thursday in Albuquerque New Mexico at about four o'clock. He was about 23 years old, born near Moscow, lived on state road 244, and was the son of Mr and Mrs Tom Gosney. He taught bands at Lapel Charlottesville and Milroy high schools. His body returned to his grandmother near Moscow.
Judge Titsworth of the Circuit court announced Florence Parker was appointed to the county board of Children's Guardians. She succeeds Elizabeth Waite, who resigned due to illness. Parker already serves as the county probation officer.
Retailers in Carthage will be closed on Christmas Day allowing local merchants a holiday. Shoppers are urged to complete purchases on Tuesday to cover Christmas Day.
About 160 people attended the event last Friday night featuring 18 bridge tables and a dance program. Harold Shaffer with his seven piece orchestra provided music, Earl Easter performed acrobatics, and Virginia McManus sang Solitude. Proceeds of about 75.86 dollars will go to the Milk fund for schoolchildren.
