Postmaster Bill Alexander announces the lobby will be open Sunday December 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. for box holders. Mail will arrive Sunday morning and be cased, but there will be no rural delivery or window service that day.
The P.T.O. Christmas program will be held Tuesday December 19 at 7 30 p m in the school gym under the music department. The public is invited to attend.
Real estate activity in Rush County totalled about 250000 dollars for November with Rushville property transfers at 99000 and city hall site and parking lot purchases among two city government deals. Farm transfers reached 95000 and small town and suburban sales 56000. month total trails October but surpasses November 1960 by about 83000.
The Order of Eastern Star met at the Lodge Hall on Wednesday night for its regular stated meeting. A Christmas party and Gift Exchange followed the session with entertainment by Carthage High School girls trio Jeannine Terhune Carol Carver and Pam Hunt with accompaniment by Lynn Kennedy. Refreshments were served by the officers.
Gale Asby aged 16 and two companions escaped after a Tuesday night crash when Asby failed to negotiate a turn north of Carthage. The car left the road, clipped a utility pole that fell across the vehicle, with damage estimated at 1000 dollars. Asby was cited by state police for reckless driving.
Rue's Tavern team won a bowling match at Darth Knight Bowling Lanes last Sunday, beating Rushville American Legion 2262 to 2210. Alleyn Gorrell led with a 510 series, Sherman Brown 487, while Rue McDaniel had a 192 and Gorrell 185 in high games.
Emily Weaver hosted a Friday meeting of the Charlottesville Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. The session opened with Love Divine, included devotions by Ruth Silver and a Christmas carol roll call. Nellie Macy gave the lesson on Cana and water into wine, with two poems read by Macy and Ethelda Stewart. Ida Jessup led prayer at adjournment, refreshments served for eleven members, one visitor Mrs Edgar Weaver and her daughter, and a gift exchange concluded.
The Brotherhood and Sisterhood will meet Monday December 18 at 7 30 p m at the Carthage Community Center. Election of officers will be held and all members are urged to attend.
David Ruby of Indiana University and Carthage served as a delegate from Wednesday to Sunday at the Young Democrats National Convention. The event took place at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach Florida.
Roy Stanley recovers from a Saturday heart attack at Hancock Co Hospital Greenfield in room 105. Harry Leadbetter of Carthage seeks treatment at Rush Memorial Hospital this week. Pearl N. Stevens of Carthage underwent major surgery at New Castle Clinic last Friday, in room 209. Larkin Day returns home south of Carthage after two weeks at Henry County Hospital for major surgery.
Mr and Mrs Roscoe Brown visited Mrs Orpha Hyatt at the 1 O C F Odd Fellows Home Hospital in Greensburg last Friday.
Carthage High School and grade school students organize donation drives for canned foods and toys to aid the needy. Boxes will be collected December 18 with pickup December 19, while students enjoy Christmas programs and festive classroom decorations throughout December.
Bouncing Bill Baker of radio fame appears at the Carthage Community Center on Friday December 15 as part of the Carthage Kid Canteen United Fund drive. Admission is 45 cents per couple and 25 cents per single. Two gift drawings will be held at 9 PM and 10 PM.
The local American Legion post will hold a turkey shoot next Sunday December 17 at Windsor Field just north of the city limits, starting at noon.
Rev. C. A. Hoover conference vice president will speak at Carthage Wesleyan Methodist Church Sunday morning December 17 at 10 30. Public invited. Pastor C. C. Field invites attendees.
Carthage defeated Milroy 54-50 as Jon Smith led with 22 points while Jordan added 10 and J C Anderson 21. Liberty edged Carthage 53-52 in a late thriller as Selfer hit the decisive shot after a stalled final possession. Milroy second team beat Carthage 37-30 in the curtain raiser.
Stanley Hurst of Orange Town ship tops the Rush County 5 Acre Corn Yield contest with 172 bushels per acre. Duane Tramel of Union Township is runner up at 168. Charles Hurst and Doyle Tramel tied for third at 164. Fifty nine adults and forty five junior members competed, with 104 contestants averaging 134.4 bushels in 1961, the highest since records began.
The Rush County Agriculture Extension School is set for Tuesday January 9 in the courthouse assembly room. Purdue agronomist LD Morrow will discuss Crop production decisions in 1962 and list varieties and practices that pay. Purdue economist Paul Robbins will speak on Economics of Fertilization of Crops. The event is open to the public.
The Carthage Better Business Association held a noon meeting at Geise Restaurant led by president Clyde Ruby. Lloyd Manuel was elected president with Bob McKain as vice president and Mrs. Kenneth Rhodes appointed to a post.
Carthage Lions Club members and families enjoyed a Christmas turkey dinner and gift exchange for about seventy guests. President Leonard Jackson presided. Pam Hunt led the program in the auditorium with the Santa's Workshop musical act featuring Craig Lafuse Mindy Lafuse Jack Stevens and others, accompanied by Lynn Kennedy.
A flash fire gutted the Thomas Gorman residence on the Charles Foust farm about 1.5 miles northeast of Carthage. Thomas and Mrs. Gorman were away. their children were at school. The house and contents, including recently bought washer and dryer, are a total loss with clothing and furniture destroyed. Faulty wiring suspected. insurance partially covers losses.
The Alpha Beta Chapter honored its twelfth birthday at the Durbin Hotel with a dinner. Doris Armstrong and Dorothy Brunson led a birthday ceremony, Michael Woods played two piano numbers, and Mrs. Reka Matthews spoke on teaching foreign languages in schools. Hostess team included Helen Phares Helena Dunn Josephine Alexander Mary Ellen Pearson Alta Carfield and Gladys Smith with attendees from Carthage.
The Container Corporation of America will distribute free seedlings to Rush County farmers with a limit of 100 to 2,000 per applicant. All applications must be received by February 1 for erosion control and reforestation use only. Seedlings species include yellow poplar ash black locust cottonwood sycamore and walnut. Application blanks are at the Rush County Extension Office. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Manuel and sons visited Indianapolis Sunday.
Andy B. McCowan 56 of Southport near Indianapolis died Tuesday night from a heart attack. Formerly of Carthage he lived at 1120 Briarwood Drive and served as New York Central station agent and telegraph operator before moving to Indianapolis. He was past master of Rush Lodge No 580 Masonic order. Survivors include widow Mildred son James granddaughter Jenipher Marie McCowan six brothers and two sisters. Services Friday at 10 a.m. at J. C. Wilson Southport Chapel.
Ball State Teachers College in Muncie reports an 11.6 percent on campus enrollment rise to 7,838, with the freshman class at 3,019 and graduate enrollment at 1,151. The university gains the first own doctorates in education and philosophy in social science education and shows wide regional and national reach across counties states and foreign countries.
