Fire destroys historic White dwelling in Carthage
The White double house on North Main Street in Carthage burned Wednesday morning. Occupied by Jesse Rumple family and Mrs Della Rumple, the fire started from a defective chimney. Firemen saved about half the furnishings and Christmas gifts, but most clothing for the two families was burned. The landmark, over a century old, once housed the Carthage Post Office and was owned by Fred and Ruth White.

Army Pfc Cary L Ellis 21 son of Max G Ellis Knightstown Indiana serves with 32nd Signal Battalion in Exercise SABRE KNOT in Germany. The training runs until December 8 and involves about 30,000 troops testing winter combat readiness in Darmstadt with Ellis as radio and carrier operator. He joined the Army in March 1961 after basic at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and arrived overseas in August. Carthage Youth Melvin McClurg Dies In Weekend Crash
Melvin McClurg 22 of Carthage died Saturday night when his car left Henderson Road near U.S. 52 and struck a culvert. The car, owned by Finley Smith and loaned to McClurg, traveled 91 feet before impact, killing him instantly with a fractured neck and skull. He was alone, recently licensed, and employed by Alsta Containers. He is survived by his parents, five brothers, four sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Tuesday at Hampton Mortuary. burial in Town Cemetery.
