Carthage Radio & Appliance Shop announces an all night sale on Friday December 14 1962. Hubert Hunt owner says discounts apply to television sets radios stereo Hi-FIs and other items. Free door prizes every hour from 10 p.m. for registrants and a color showing of Tonight Show.
Mr and Mrs Dean Addison of Carthage R R 1 are the parents of a 5% lb son named James Russell born Thursday November 29 1962 at Hancock County Hospital. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Hoyt Addison of Carthage R R1.
Three Rush County students at Ball State Teachers College received scholarships for the 1962-63 academic year. Sara Jane Hunt, a freshman. Omer S. Waggoner, a senior. and Jo Ella Goins, a freshman, each won a named scholarship from local foundations and newspapers.
Mr and Mrs A W Winfield and Mrs Homer Hensler return from a ten day Texas trip. They visited J Spencer Lloyd family in Austin and Henslers saw relatives in Bryan. They attended the Thanksgiving Day Texas University versus Texas A and M football game.
Fifteen Carthage Home Garden Club members held a workshop at the Community Center after noon Tuesday. Members displayed 3 to 5 Christmas articles each for home decor including centerpieces trees plaques and candles. Thirty-six guests from Carthage Rushville Mays and Charlottesville attended and were served cookies and hot punch. Chairmen were Mrs Homer Hensler and Mrs Albert Ray.
Max Brown aged 40 died of a heart attack Monday night at his Houston home. He formerly lived in Knightstown and moved to Texas five years ago with his family. Survived by widow Ruth Winkler Brown a son a married daughter and one granddaughter. Sister in law Mrs Marcus McClurg of Carthage. Funeral Friday at 2 p.m. Butcher's Funeral Home Knightstown with burial at Glen Cove Cemetery.
Mrs Omer Heim hosted a Monday Literary Circle meeting with twelve members present. President Mrs Loyal Hunt led the group and a CARE collection was taken for the club’s Christmas project. Mrs Fred White presented a program on Christmas Around The World. Refreshments followed.
The December meeting at Geise Restaurant was led by Ligudiimsuiel with minutes by Mrs Clyde. The Volunteer Fire Dept completed downtown Christmas lights. funding discussed and donations invited. Officers elected: Parvel Moore president, Jane Rhodes vice president, Bol Winters secretary treasurer, Arminta Ruby assistant. January dinner plans discussed.
The Rush County 4H and Open Corn Show are set for December 13 to 15. Marion Liggett chairs the Better Crops Association meeting that outlined classes for 4 H and Open divisions including new shelling percentage longest ear and most unusual ear. Supervisors Clarence Dyer and Lewis Lafuse were named for the corn and farm products shows with several agronomy extension schools planned.
News from Carthage High School includes Mike making the Varsity team and guidance on teamwork. Junior high games at Mays feature the A and B squads with scores for Carthage and Mays, plus listed players and cafeteria menus for December meals.
Flames engulfed the Gurley property barn Tuesday afternoon at 1 31 p m as passers by alerted Mrs Gurley and firefighters. The blaze consumed the structure and its contents including a Chevrolet car owned by Mrs Gurley but insurance covered the loss.
CHANGE RESIDENCE Jr. and Mrs. Russell Siler and family moved last week from East 2nd Street to South Main Street in Carthage detailing a local address change by the family.

Mrs Fletcher Edwards fell Sunday morning at her home and dislocated her shoulder according to a local report.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wrightsman of Carthage observed a 25th wedding anniversary with a noon dinner at Vance's Restaurant in New Castle hosted by their daughter Mrs. Ronnie Draper and family. A surprise home reception followed with about fifty guests and a three-tier wedding cake.
Harvey Gilson aged 85 of Knightstown died at Jackson Nursing Home Rushville last Sunday morning. He was born February 18, 1877, son of Robert and Ellen Gilson, never married, lived mostly around Knightstown, owned a farm east of Carthage. Survived by sister Mrs W L Herkless Carthage and niece Mrs Donald Staten Sr. one sister preceded him. Funeral Tuesday 2 p.m. Hamp Mortuary Carthage Rev Basil Stultz. Burial in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knightstown.
Mr and Mrs Elmer French hosted a buffet dinner Friday for the wedding party and guests after rehearsals. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Jack Collins Mr and Mrs Lowell French Pamela and Sheryl French Mr and Mrs Leonard Sullivan Jr Rev and Mrs Rex Mitchell Gene Fortner Duane Elliott Joe Foust Jennifer Wilson Loretta Newman Bill Capistrani Ronald Sullivan and Janet French O E S Christmas Party and meeting follow with a 50 cent gift exchange set for December 12 at 7 30 p m.
Indiana State Senator Richard Newhouse 58, a Morristown hardware dealer, collapsed and died at the Shelbyville Masonic Temple while completing The Lord’s Prayer during the Baldwin Commandery Knights Templar annual inspection. First aid was given by his wife Dr. Margaret Newhouse and a hospital rescue unit. death attributed to a heart attack. He served in the Indiana House in 1947-49 and was elected in 1952 as joint senator from Rush Fayette and Shelby Counties. He was born September 5, 1904, near Gwynneville, and involved in farming, banking, and local Masonic and Eastern Star organizations. Surviving are his wife, two children James and Mary Ann, three sisters, and numerous in-laws.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Whitfield of Carthage celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at home on Monday. Married in 1912 at Raywick Kentucky they have one daughter Beatrice Bannister of Columbus Indiana and four sons Charles James Leon of Carthage and Kenneth of Knightstown with twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr Whitfield retired from Container Corporation of America in Carthage after 37 years in 1960.
Funeral services for Amanda Catherine Whitfield ninety of Carthage were held at St Rose of Lima Church near Knightstown. She died Monday morning at her daughter’s home after failing health for three years. Survivors include three sons Henry John Leo all of Carthage and three daughters Chlora Sanders Frances Ray and Marie Zimmerman. Burial at Carthage Town Cemetery. Hampton Mortuary in charge.
The Carthage Raiders lost 57 to 56 to Arlington after leading most of the game. Ron Weidner led Carthage with 17 points while Kit Porter and Gene Patterson added 14 each. Arlington held a 37 to 18 rebound edge and secured the late turnover.
The Rev. H. E. Darnell of Vivian Louisiana will lead a revival at Carthage Nazarene Church December 6 to 16 at 7 30 p m nightly. Kenneth Geneva Ashby and sons of Indianapolis will provide music including solos duets and a quartet. Public invitation extended.
