Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. White of Carthage R. 1 returned home from Chicago where Mr. White attended the National Fair Association Convention at the Sherman Hotel. They also visited the International Livestock Show during their four day trip.
Mr and Mrs Delmar Sipes returned Saturday from a two week Florida trip. They spent Thanksgiving week with daughter and son in Jacksonville. In the second week they visited Mr and Mrs Cecil Rohm in Palm Beach area and called on Mr and Mrs Marble Edwards in Mt Dora before heading home.
The Carthage Friends Meeting held a Christmas season pitch-in supper and family night on December 9. United Society of Friends Women co-chaired by Mrs. James Dalrymple and Mrs. Omar Heim decorated tables and hosted a program after the meal. Gene Lewis, pastor, presented travel photos and a narration of trips through the southwestern United States.
The notice lists several individuals under medical care or recovery. Mrs. Jess Pitts is convalescing at Rush Memorial Hospital after surgery four weeks ago. Mrs. Eva Herkless remains at her Carthage home, and Mrs. Floyd Reddick is hospital bound. James Geise, A. J. Carr, and Mr. David Ray show varying improvement or status at Rush Memorial or Carthage homes. Mrs. Herbert Weidner is under observation at Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis.
The Rainbow group of White Shrine entertained Sunday at Mrs. Rachel's home with a turkey dinner. Attendees included Roy Socin and Mrs. Lola Noble of Muncie, Mrs. Maude Farlow of Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Rinehart, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Blackburn of New Castle, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gauker of Lewisville, and Joe Polen of Carthage.
The Goodwill truck will make its monthly stop in Carthage on Wednesday December 16 at the home of Mrs Gouldie Kyser. Free sacks for articles are available at Mrs Kysers residence.
Funeral service for Mrs. Margaret Ford Cooney 87 will be held Friday in Connersville. She died Tuesday in Milwaukee where she had lived for years and formerly resided in Connersville. She is survived by sister Mrs. Harry Ledbetter of Carthage. Requiem High Mass at 1 pm Friday at St. Gabriel Church with burial in City Cemetery.
The Moms and Dads of Eastern Hancock High School seniors host a benefit supper in Wilkinson school cafeteria on Friday evening December 11 starting at 5 00 pm. After the basketball game against Carthage, chili ham sandwiches salads pie and drinks are served to raise funds for the Senior Class Travel Fund. Mr and Mrs Ronald Magee of Sault Ste Marie Michigan visit relatives for the holidays.
The Carthage License Bureau is now at 3 S Main St Store and reopens for business on Monday December 14, 1964 with Sally Windsor as License Manager.
Rep John A Ruby a Democrat of Carthage attends a three day conference prepping for the Indiana General Assembly session which begins January 7. He supports economy in government and improved services while seeking higher school funding lower property taxes and more efficient agencies.
The State Bank of Carthage will close at noon Saturday December 26 1964 following Christmas Day.
Garden Club members should bring gifts for shut ins to Mrs. Fred Flick's home on Tuesday December 15 between 7 and 23 pm.
Murray Schuneman, longtime employee of Independent Concrete Pipe Corp in Indianapolis, plans retirement after 39 years. The Carthage native will relocate to Florida around December 23 for a Christmas in the sun.
Marvin Foust of Rural Route Carthage files for divorce from Nettie Foust. They wed February 11 1954 and separated October 26 1959. He requests custody of their three children and sole ownership of living room furniture and fixtures. Mrs. Foust has been a patient at Madison State Hospital for more than five years.
Christmas dinner for Durbin residents and guests was held Tuesday at 6 30 p m with twenty nine attending. Mrs Lloyd Manuel and Mrs Donald Ruby organized the event featuring bingo with ten prizes and a gift exchange. The gathering ended with a chorus of Silent Night. Attendees included a long list of couples and individuals led by Mrs Manuel and the Rubys.
Students will dismiss at 11 a.m. on Wednesday December 23 for holidays and return at 8 25 a m on Monday January 4 1965.
Carthage High School announces locker purchases for upper grades with 150 units at 4 dollars per opening, 25 cent semester rental, and student responsibility for locks. Cafeteria menus list weekly offerings and desserts for December. The issue covers senior yearbook photos, Social Security briefing for students, and a Sunday School address by Mrs. Mary Mandy Dale, with her extensive mission work noted. Funeral services for Col. Willard H. Crawford are reported with details of survivors and Arlington burial.
The Carthage School music department presents its annual Christmas program in the gym Friday at 7 30 p m. Sixth graders pantomime the Christmas story while elementary students sing carols and instrumental groups perform. The High School Chorus and small ensembles contribute while the High School Band closes with seasonal selections.
Carthage High School forms a JCL chapter with eighteen members from Latin I and II. Officers include President Arlene Ruby and Vice President Peggy Addison. Sponsor Mrs. Vera R. Compton. The club aims to promote interest in ancient Greece and Rome and to join a national organization with regular meetings and cultural activities. A state convention is planned for March 27, 1965, at Clowes Hall.
Edith Batts of Louisville Kentucky died Saturday night after a lingering illness. She was sister to Russell Roland Carthage Ralph Zapf Charlottesville Michael Zapf Greenfield Charles Zapf and Myrtle Zapf Indianapolis. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Louisville with burial there. Several relatives from this area attended.
Gerald Stewart 62 died at Henry County Hospital after illness. He farmed and worked as an auctioneer and trucker in the Carthage area. Survived by two daughters, a son, a sister, stepchildren, grandchildren, and step-grandchildren. Funeral at Hampton Funeral Home Carthage with burial in Glen Cove Cemetery Knightstown.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service held its annual Turkey dinner and guest day on December 2 at the Methodist Church. Twenty-two members, five guests, and two children attended. An organ and piano duet opened the program, with Mrs. Irma Richey of Milroy delivering the Christmas note.
Purdue University economists and state agricultural statisticians report Indiana farmers earned 3 percent less for their products from mid September to mid October after a 60 day price rise. Hoosier purchasing power fell 3 percent while U S farmers gained 1 percent as prices held steady. Hog prices fell 8 percent and corn declined 12 percent, driving a 4 percent drop in Indiana livestock with milk and soybeans the only gainers at 3 percent.
Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hall included Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Jackson.
Carthage trounced Arlington 82 to 61 as senior forward Richard Grizzell led with 32 points. The Raiders built a 13 10 first quarter edge and led 39 25 at halftime, finishing 62 47 after three. Carthage also won the B team game 47 28.
Morton Memorial juniors dominated the Arlington Invitational defeating Raleigh 65 22 and Carthage 43 29 to clinch the title. Carthage beat host Arlington 34 27 to reach the final, while Raleigh took the consolation game 37 34. Morton led 19 15 at halftime and 30 23 after three quarters with Richey and Lemons scoring 13 and 10.
The P T O Christmas Program will be presented at 7 30 p m Friday December 18 in the auditorium. Mrs Land director of vocal music and Mr Edwards director of music head the event with staff support. Students from grades 1 through 12 will participate and should be seated by 7 15 p m.
