The Better Business Association of Carthage will organize bulb replacements with support from Carthage organizations businesses and civic minded individuals. Contacts will be made. Hubert Hunt serves as president of the association.
A boy was born last Thursday at Henry County Hospital in New Castle to Mr. and Mrs. Luther C. Couch of Carthage. Miss Pam Hunt will appear in the Jordan Ballet Christmas program at Clowes Hall on Friday December 11th and Sunday December 13th. She will dance the Chinese Variation from Tschaikowsky Nutcracker Suite. The ballet group will travel to Springfield Ohio this weekend to present the same program with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walker of R. 2 Carthage returned home from three weeks in Florida during the weekend. They visited her brother Leonard Ruby and family in Ft Lauderdale and spent three days at Key West. They were dinner guests of Mr. Walker's uncle Jack Oldham and his wife in Ft Lauderdale.
The Carthage School will host collection boxes from the American Legion and Auxiliary for food and usable toys. Distributions will form Christmas baskets for needy residents during Christmas week, organized by appointed Legion and Auxiliary committees in this township.
Mrs. William Fred Magee and daughters Marsha and Debbie with Mrs. Ann Fitch of Carthage spent Thanksgiving weekend in Michigan visiting sons stationed at Kincheloe Air Force Base. Magee and daughters visited A/2C Ronald Magee. Fitch saw Sgt. Glen Fitch and family. Fitch enjoyed sightseeing in Michigan and Canada via her son and family.
The sick Mrs. Phillip Sattler remains convalescing at her home north of Carthage. A. J. Carr of Knightstown, formerly of Carthage, had major surgery at Rush Memorial Hospital. James Geise of Carthage is convalescing at Rush Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. Mrs. Herbert Weidner is a patient at Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis. Gerald Stewart is a patient at Henry County Hospital.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Johnson of Carthage R2 announce the birth of a son, David Allen, weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces, born Friday November 27 at Community Hospital in Indianapolis. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Charles Blankenship of Carthage R2 and Mr and Mrs Shelley Johnson of Brownsburg Indiana.
Mr and Mrs Harold Souder of Knightstown R R 2 announce the birth of a daughter Cynthia Ann weighing six pounds born Saturday November 28 at Rush Memorial Hospital. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Howard Souder of R 2 Carthage.
Roy E. Harrold announces October sales totals for Rush County at 16,459 dollars versus 39,840 for October last year. Statewide October sales reached 10,633,984 dollars, down 9.6 percent from a year earlier. Twenty-two of 92 counties showed sales gains for the month.
Thanksgiving guests were Mr and Mrs Burton Logan and son of Grayson Kentucky visiting Mr and Mrs Tony Riley and daughter.
John A. Ruby of Carthage filed his campaign contributions and expenditures in Rush and Shelby counties for his election to joint state representative. Total contributions $1,239.65 and expenses $1,245.21. Major donors include district committees and individuals. expenditures cover advertising supplies printing and travel. Also notes Thanksgiving guests of the Wilsons.
Funeral services for Frank Young 54 who died from injuries after a Sunday auto crash near Julietta on U S 52 were held at Wilson Funeral Home Fountain Square Indianapolis. Burial was in Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Survivors include wife Elaine Bryant son Roger Young New Palestine daughter Joan Miller Indianapolis brother Earl Young Rushville and several stepchildren and grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Russell Roland hosted a Thanksgiving turkey dinner for children grand children and guests including Miss Vivian Powers of Charlottesville and Mr and Mrs Virgil Roland of Greenfield with 32 present. Pfc Ronald Roland recently visiting left Tuesday for Fort Riley Kansas.
Mr and Mrs Richard Harrold and Linda Harrold attended the wedding of Mrs Harrold's niece on Sunday in the chapel of the Main Street Christian Church Rushville.
Carthage High School No 18 participates in an Arlington junior high basketball invitational on Saturday December 5. Carthage meets Arlington at 1:00 p.m. with Raleigh and Morton at 2:00 p.m. Consolation at 7:00 p.m. and final at 8:00 p.m. Admission 75 cents adults 30 cents students. Doors open 12:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
Pupils below seventh grade cannot attend basketball games without a parent or responsible adult. The policy aims to protect the children, the school, and other attendees at the games.
Community drive by American Legion members seeks canned foods and toys from school children. Collection boxes go in classrooms Monday December 7 with pickup Monday December 21.
Mr and Mrs Dale May and four sons hosted guests including Frank May and six children from near Glenwood and Albert and Paul May with Clara Parker near Falmouth. Others hosted or visited included Gorman families from Peebles and Ramona and Deanna, Purdue student Steve Marshall, and numerous relatives in Greenfield, Greenport, Rushville, Carmel, and Indianapolis.
Unsealed greeting cards without writing except a name may be mailed for 4c but cannot be forwarded or returned undeliverable. Cards with letter rate 5c can be forwarded or returned if they carry a return address. Sealed cards and those with writing must bear letter-rate postage. Postman Alexander urges mailers to send early and use zip codes on all mail including parcels. If a return address is shown, include local zip code 46115 after city and state. Money orders can be written on Saturdays through December 26.
The Better Business Association of Carthage elected Hubert Hunt as president Robert McKain as vice president and Esther Magee as secretary treasurer at a Tuesday noon meeting presided by Joyce Harrold. A Community Christmas Fund was proposed to cover town Christmas lights and bulb replacements with donations from businesses organizations and individuals invited. Store hours for the two Saturdays after Christmas and New Year were set: December 26 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and January 2 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Carthage Band Boosters met December 1 in the school band room with eight present. Vice President Mrs. Ralph Deboard chaired in president Mrs. Gail Barry's absence. A supper for seniors was planned for January 7 at the Community Center with dining room and kitchen committees appointed.
United Society of Friends Women invite members for a family night on Wednesday December 9 at the Friends Church. A pitch-in supper starts at 6 30 p.m. followed by an interesting program.
State highway officials announced low bidders on seven Interstate 70 and related projects across central Indiana near Terre Haute Greenfield and New Castle. Key bids include Berns Construction Co. for 7.3 miles at 2.4 million, Hunt Paving Co. for 6.9 miles at 3.3 million, and Gast Construction Co. with S. J. Groves & Co. for a Terre Haute by pass at 2.8 million. Additional work on Interstate 65 Lake County U.S. 41 Vincennes bypass and Indiana 37 four lanes were also let.
