In Indianapolis on December 5 the writer muses on Christmas as a fleeting, vibrant season like a gold-spangled horse on a merry-go-round. He recalls overheard chatter about reducing gift extravagance and argues for shared joy, family moments, and the season’s message of cheer and peace.
A pet crow owned by Chief of Police Otto E Chandler of Greenfield left home for several months and moved to the northern part of the state. The bird reportedly spoke to locals saying Oi Chandler. Investigations traced the chief and the bird was promptly returned. Chandler, devoted to his pet, works to provide the best feed.
Five cars of train No. 74 derailed in Carthage Sunday morning when an arch bar failed. The cars overturned on the embankment but sustained minimal damage and were righted by Beech Grove wreckers by Sunday night. No injuries were reported.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Rays Crossing Christian Church for Milton C. Hauk 68 found dead in his Shelbyville home Sunday from paralysis. He leaves a widow five sons Emerson Manila Merrill Rushville Edgar near Fairland Earl Morristown two sisters Mrs Sarah Moss Indianapolis Mrs Will Dismore Greenfield and two brothers Alvin Morristown E E Hauk near Morristown. Rev W R Jinnett Manilla officiated with burial at Bennett Cemetery.
Rev Prideaux of Maine spoke to the student body Monday morning sharing stories and experiences that entertained the pupils. The junior play last Tuesday yielded 36 dollars for the Junior-Senior reception and sixth graders will bake biscuits and corn bread using ground wheat and corn meal.
A new oratorical contest will be sponsored by Hancock County country schools. Participants will present original discussion type orations chosen by a county committee from subjects proposed by the county English teachers. Rules on presentation originality and style remain the same as in past years.

The Sunday peace gathering drew a modest crowd due to bad weather yet attracted members from Westland Walnut Ridge Little Blue and Charlottesville churches. William Prideaux shared prison experiences in World War England arguing pacifism and a two year trend among Protestant clergy. He urged that 25 000 young men jailed for refusing to fight could end war following Gandhi and Quaker ideals. Prideaux planned more talks this week and stayed with local host families.
Pauline McCorkle 22 of Carthage and Earl Branock 23 of Pendleton were quietly married Wednesday at 7 15 pm at the Wesleyan Methodist parsonage. Rev Manchester read the ceremony in presence of the bride’s brother Paul McCorkle. Mrs Branock is a local school graduate, class of 1932. The couple will reside in Pendleton after the ceremony.
Orville Atkins of Arlington collided with Paul Larne of Indianapolis on U S Highway 52 west of Rushville last Thursday night. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and no injuries were reported as weather reduced visibility and ice prompted a sudden stop.
The town board met in regular session Monday night under president P. J. Sattler. The meeting dealt with routine business and approving monthly bills. Discussion on water bonds yielded no definite decision but bids are expected to be sold in a few days as many offers have been made. J. A. Lineback, clerk, P. J. Sattler, president.
The Masons of Carthage entertained about 136 members and guests at a two course turkey banquet Tuesday night. The event featured a Christmas decorated room and candles, with Bayard Baker as toastmaster and a musical program by an orchestra led by Meyers. Rushville schools officials Lockwood and Meyers addressed the group on Plumbline.
The seventieth semi annual convocation of the Scottish Rite Masons will convene December 9 to 13 at the Cathedral in Indianapolis. Counties represented include Shelby, Marion, Fayette, Franklin and Rush. District chairmen Fred J. Deiden and Dora W. Sherry lead preliminaries with a list of organizers from Shelbyville Greenfield Connersville Brookville and Rushville coordinating the plan.
Indiana reports 3,526 more licensed stores in 1935 than 1934. End-November totals rise to 64,616 from 61,090. Gross income tax receipts for the third quarter 1935 show about a 16 percent increase, totaling 3,299,772 versus 2,854,254 in 1934 for a comparable period.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority sponsors a benefit dance and card party in the Auditorium on December 20 at eight p m to raise money for the school milk fund. A 10 piece Indianapolis orchestra will provide music for dancing with games and cards available. Tickets are one dollar per couple, sold by sorority members, and proceeds support milk for students.
The Women's council of this county will sponsor a tuberculosis clinic Thursday December 5 at Dr. E I Wooden's offices on West Third street Rushville. Examinations will be made by Dr. E M Amos of Indianapolis supported by Christmas seal sales. The aim is to raise funds and provide thorough checks for tuberculosis amid seasonal illness.
Two Knightstown young men Fred Pennington and Grover Harrold were injured Tuesday evening when their cars collided at Brown and Washington streets. Pennington had a scalp wound. Harrold and Philip Wood suffered facial injuries. Harrold drove west on Brown. Pennington headed north on Washington. vehicles swerved and were moved after immediate medical care.
The section northeast of here from the Orphans Home to Knightstown, Road No. 140, is slated for paving next spring. The project uses bituminous retread black-top financed with Federal aid. Labor will come from relief rolls at top and lower wage rates.
Howard E. Henley Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard E. Henley, is a clarinetist in the Earlham College band this year. Directed by Mr. Beeson, the group gave its first public performance during a recent chapel program. Henley is a Carthage high school graduate of 1935.
Mrs. Dale Rafferty of Greenfield who was injured in an auto accident a week ago has been discharged from an Indianapolis hospital and returned home. She will be confined to bed for many weeks due to her injuries.
The Ripley township drive led by Mrs. Hazel Cooper Mrs. Ella Coffin Mrs. Jo anna Gibson and chairwoman Mrs. Ora Siler aims to boost donations for tuberculosis care. Funds stay locally for clinics visiting nurses and stamp out TB with a $25 Ripley quota.

Members with old or rare Bibles urged to bring them. Pastoral committee meets Monday at 7 at S. L. Newsom's home, church business meeting Thursday at 7 preceded by a devotional lesson.
