Miss Elsie Chappell is much improved at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. She expresses gratitude for messages and cards received.
Stated meeting announced for Rush Lodge No. 580 F and AM on Wednesday evening September 5. Bill Aker and Robert Stanley are in reserve training at Camp McCoy Wisconsin for two weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Robertson and sons Dickie and Bil along with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gasper of Ogden attended wrestling events at the ball park in Richmond on Monday night.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Fenner and son Larry returned from a ten day vacation visiting Niagara Falls Toronto Canada Detroit Michigan and Fulton Michigan where they stayed with Mrs Fenster s sister and family the Rev and Mrs Kenneth Kuebler.
The district gathering of conservation clubs occurs Friday at 7 30 p m at the Carthage Community Center. Delegates from eleven counties will attend and invited guests may join the meeting.
Mr and Mrs Ora Clayton and their children returned Sunday from Ludington Michigan where they spent a ten day vacation.
The Rev. Ora Hisle of Dublin will replace the Rev. Gerald Fleming as pastor at the Church of the Nazarene in Carthage. The Rev. Robert Shockney of near Van Wert Ohio has been appointed as pastor of the Carthage Friends church and moved here Tuesday. The Rev. Sommer and family moved last week to Logansport.
Reta Stanley and Kathy Ruby, daughters of Roy Stanley and Clyde E Ruby, were awarded trips to Coney Island and Cincinnati amusement park and zoo last Friday. They were chosen from their club for the highest scoring record books of first year club members in major 4-H projects.
Shelby Motors defeats Carthage 6 to 4 at Rushville diamond to claim the league championship in a pitching duel. Wayne Woods and Bill Baker each had key hits for Shelby while Bode struck out eight over seven innings. Carthage scored two in the sixth as Lewman fanned four for the losers.
Preliminary federal census totals released by Mayor James L Allen put Greenfield population at 8 078, well below officials prior estimate of 9 200. The special census raises state gasoline and excise tax distributions by about 12 000 annually.
The public is invited to a Euchre party at Carthage Community Center on Wednesday night September 5. Refreshments and prizes will be provided.
Mr and Mrs David W McNabb of Bedford Indiana were Sunday evening visitors of Dr and Mrs George B McNabb.
The local automobile license branch will close all day Saturday September 1 and Labor Day following a Bureau of Motor Vehicles notice. Manager Anice Bly urges August birthday drivers to check if their license expires this month.
Notice states the Tweedy Memorial Center Association will hold its annual meeting at the Community Center Building on September 11 1956 at 8 00 PM CST. Purpose to elect officers for the coming year and discuss other matters pertaining to the operation of the association. Signed Parvel Moore President.
Mrs. Mary E. McClurg entertained the Twice Four bridge club at her home on Tuesday night with Betty Brooks Helen Graff and Josephine Stevens receiving honors. Other guests included Mary Taylor Flossie McCorkle Leone Mosier and Mae Moore with refreshments served by the hostess.
About 250 relatives and descendants attended the Beech community Home Coming at Mt. Pleasant Beech church founded in 1832. Memorial services honored Sanford Hill Henry G Stager James Bassett and Artie Scott. Lawrence Carter Lucille Burnette hosted last year’s film shown. Rev Frank F Young from Indianapolis spoke. local committee led by Louise Tuttle and others.
Marshal Hugh Trowbridge issues a warning to all teenagers driving without licenses. He notes that driving without proper authorization is illegal and subjects violators to arrest. He cites complaints of youngsters under 18 driving cars and tractors in Carthage and promises strict enforcement at the four way stops near the school and town intersections.
Miss Barbara McCullen aged 18 and Junior Henderson aged 20 both of Shirley were married by Justice Lon Mc Corkle on Saturday night.
The Hoosier Motor Club begins its annual School Open Drive to urge motorists to slow near schools. Posters and bumper strips carry the message School's Open Drive Carefully. The campaign lists key rules for drivers and cooperation with School Safety Patrols.
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles plans to mail new Registration Certificates to car owners with 1957 license plates. Commissioner Morris J. Carter notes many owners move without notifying the bureau, delaying deliveries. Owners should file a Change of Address at local Auto License Branches or submit a direct notice with their License Plate Number and Driver License Number for proper forwarding.
Mrs C R Mathley and her grandson Kenneth Elex Mathley and Mr and Mrs Albert Leslie discovered on arrival home Monday evening that about 200 gallons of fuel oil had been emptied into their living room through a mistaken act south of Carthage. Neighbors helped with the cleanup after the spill was found.
A two car wreck occurred Monday at 3 30 p m just south of town near the Tom Mc Cary home. Melvin Pat Wolfe 1953 Olds driven north rear ended Annette Keith 1956 Ford 22 of 718 North Oliver Rushville. Keith car went up an embankment causing 1500 damage. Wolfe car 150 damage. Excessive speed blamed. Wolfe arrested by state police. Nine people in Keith car escaped unharmed. Keith car had 300 miles.
Sky Treme Drive-In Theatre on State Road 3 near New Castle will stage two giant fireworks displays Saturday night September 2 as a thank you to patrons and a back to school treat for children.
Miss Anna Mae Custer and Mr William Kinnett of Dillsboro will wed Saturday at 1 pm in the Methodist church. Miss Lois Hawkins will serve as bridesmaid. Tuesday night the Fidelity Class hosted a potluck and wiener roast at Henry Stinger woods with about 25 attendees and a Temperance Union meeting at Rev. and Mrs. Harry Cooper's home.
Rush County Fairgrounds hosts an open class tractor pulling event on Labor Day next Monday. Five dirt track classes run under standard rules with dual wheels allowed and two drivers per tractor optional. Entries capped at two contests per tractor. 10:30 a.m. start with two classes in the morning and three in the afternoon. Proceeds shared by the County Fair Association, concession managed by Sexton Christian Church. drivers paid by percentage in each class. Classes include 3800, 5000–7400, 6200, 7400 and over pounds.
The Carthage American Legion Auxiliary held a meeting and installation of the 1956 57 officers at the Community Center basement. Hazel Alexander became president with Norma McKain as vice president and Vera McNabb secretary. Bertha Beck installed Rachel King as treasurer and received a past president’s pin.
About 100 participants including 50 Cub Scouts and 50 parents and officials joined a Sunday gathering near Carthage to enjoy a treasure hunt nature contest and playful games. Awards by Phil Bader and Den Mother Stinger marked the event with an Indian ceremony led by Mr Badel and a Star story, followed by marshmallows and wieners roasted at three campfires.
Mrs William Kinnett and son William and his fiancée Miss Anna Mae Custer, all of were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Stanley Hawkins and daughter Lois.
The Ernie Young Revue headlines Indiana State Fair opening night in the Grandstand. The nightly show September 2 to 7 at 8 pm offers over a dozen acts including the Jaye Brothers, Great Bokara Troupe, The Kimrs, Craig's Chimps, and Manhattan Rockets with a cast over 75 musicians and performers.
The Indiana Farm Bureau Union and Grange will sponsor free variety shows September 1 and 3 through 7 in the Farmers Building auditorium. Amateur talent from across the state will perform with no admission charged. The Indiana Hymn Sing is set for September 2 at 1 p.m., led by William H. Holmes, with music by Farm Bureau musicians. A giant parade on September 6 will feature 40 floats and bands. Rush County sends 29 4 H Club exhibitors across 11 projects, including garden, poultry, beef, dairy, swine, entomology, electric, forestry, wildlife, sheep, and potato entries.
Rush County Young Democratic Club president James Webb announces a 10th District meeting to be hosted September 7 at 8 pm at the Carthage Community Center. In charge is James R. White of New Castle district president. Speakers include Bert Steinwedel Seymour candidate for State Treasurer and Gerald C. Carmony Shelby County candidate for Congress.
Duane Newhouse of Jackson Township and Herman Robbins of Ripley Township win two trips to the Indiana State Fair Boy's 4-H Club Camp. Sponsored by Miss Colletta Marie Callahan, the awards honor outstanding 4-H achievements and are named the Callahan Award and Lower Tribute. The boys left Tuesday for the camp featuring tours, work sessions, entertainment and recreation.
