World’s Greatest Hog Producer Sets New Record

Carthage community lauds Marine T. Gray as his eight ton-litters produced 83 market hogs from 88 born last spring. Hogs averaged 225 lbs and 81 sold at top price. The feat, from February 24 to 28 farrowings, marks a potential world record for hog breeders.

Local Meeting Showed Hobbies At Ripley Township Society

The Ripley Township Historical Society held its semi annual meeting at Friends' church due to rain. Members displayed hobby collections from handkerchiefs to entomology and mounted bugs with prizes, plus a violin recital and a history talk.

Mrs Lowell Macy Dies At Arlington Home

Eva Macy 41 wife of Lowell K Macy died at her home southwest of Arlington Tuesday morning after a two year illness. She was daughter of Edward and Millie Heaton and lifelong Rush county resident. Survived by husband, son Joseph Edward, two daughters Mrs Dallas Earnest and Mrs Ivan Schaekel, three sisters, and four grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at Arlington Christian church with Rev T E Tomerlin officiating. burial in Arlington cemetery.

Mrs. Cora Blessinger was moved from the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis last Friday to her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Miner and Gaughter and Mrs. Major Miner, who have been visiting relatives and friends in and near Carthage for the past three weeks, left Thursday for their home in Oklahoma.

Rush county auditor Hubert Alexander attended a state meeting of county auditors in Gary last weekend. The group toured local steel mills during a sightseeing trip.

Mrs Myers and children move to Indianapolis for school

Mrs. R. H. Myers and her children relocate to Indianapolis this week ahead of the school opening. Rev. Myers will continue his work in Carthage until the Methodist church conference at Broadway Methodist church in Indianapolis on September 13. Three Sundays remain.

Beech Church Hosts Centennial Spiritual Meetings

The Beech Church hosts a series marking the Indiana Conference 100th anniversary and Mt. Peasant church events. Evangelist Mrs. Alberta Brown of Indianapolis spoke Wednesday night with Rev. Samuel Young and Rev. William Bivens scheduled for Thursday and Friday. The series closes Sunday with all day meetings and a basket dinner led by Miss Erma Jane Moore.

Chicago Judge Sparks Visits Rushville Kin and Kin

Judge Will M. Sparks of Chicago, a former Rush county circuit court judge, and current federal appellate court judge, spent Thursday afternoon visiting old friends and relatives in Rushville. He was born in Carthage and is a Rushville High School alumnus.

Man Arrested at Rushville Kills Self in County Jail

William Parrish a 30 year old arrested Friday night at Rushville on suspicion of forgery was found dead in the county jail early Saturday. Officials say he died by taking carbolic acid while remanded, after a prior threat to kill himself rather than go to prison. Police said he had passed worthless checks at a Rushville filling station and other checks in Marion county. Parrish had left Indianapolis Wednesday in his father’s car and had not returned. Sheriff Bennington was alerted by another prisoner about the death. A coroner confirmed the poison claim and noted blank checks and $3.35 were taken from him on remand.

Changes In Poor Relief Are Seen

Figures from the county auditor show five townships lowering poor relief levies for 1940 while six increase. Richland township will have no levy. Ripley drops from 25 to 21 cents. Anderson Rushville Walker also lower. Noble unchanged. Center Jackson Posey Union Orange and Washington show increases.

Local boy on honor list for second semester

Bloomington Indiana August 24 James Henley of Carthage is named on Indiana University honor list for the second semester of the previous school year. Registrar Thomas A Cookson released the scholastic honor roll listing 63 undergrads in the top one percent and 418 in the next nine percent, all with at least 12 hours of work.
