Rush county farmers begin harvest with mixed reports of a good season and August rains. The Rushville Packing plant sits idle due to a dispute with Health officials, while Mays and Milroy plants stay in operation. Across Indiana more than a third of canners will not operate this year as markets tighten. Carthage gains attention with a new industry, Alsta Containers, Inc., and state fair events plan a Farmers' Day parade and awards funded by the Indiana Farm Bureau and Board of Agriculture.

Local youths enter Indiana University at Bloomington

Marjorie Brown and Boyden K. Brown of Carthage are among new students admitted to Indiana University for the fall term. Admissions Director Frank R. Elliott authorized their entry. Orientation begins September 14 and 15, with a pre orientation period starting September 11. Sorority and fraternity rush is scheduled for September 11–13.

Child Escaped Attack by Enraged Hogs Near Milroy

Three year old Philip Terhune narrowly avoided serious harm when hogs at the Milroy area Terhune farm rushed him as he ran toward the house. His clothing tore and he suffered shock and fright, saved by his father's quick intervention.

Rush County Reports Progress In 1939 Road Surfacing

Elmer Harrison reports Rush county completed its 1939 black-topping program with 33.8 miles built this year and a total of 149.01 miles in the system. Ripley township has 18.75 miles of black-top with the county aided mainly by W P A funds and a county budget plan praised for efficiency.

Ripley Township Historical Society to Hold Open Meeting at Stinger Home

The Ripley Township Historical Society invites members and the public to a semi annual meeting at the museum home of Henry Stinger on South Main across from the Friends church. A pitch-in supper will be served on the lawn. Henry Stinger will display his gun and cane collection and present a short talk on the Story of the Stick. The event showcases local hobbyists with a centennial theme as preparations for the next anniversary continue.

A shabby Excelsior man collapsed on a street and resisted hospital care claiming no funds. Police found his wallet with nearly 5,000 dollars and his room yielded saving bonds, cashier’s checks, postal savings certificates, and loan stock totaling 24,215 dollars in negotiable funds.

Service Club Hosts Large Party for Wives in Greenfield

Members of a local service club hosted a big party for their wives and guests at the Shelter House in Riley Park Greenfield. The evening featured fried chicken a spelling bee won by Mrs Hubert Hunt and S L Newsom nine piece orchestra from Knightstown and a long guest list led by Murray S Kenworthy.

Hinshaw Escapes Injury After Intersecting Collision

John Hinshaw and a companion escaped serious harm when his auto collided with another car at an intersection a mile north of Charlottesville. Both cars were demolished and the occupants suffered only minor bruises and scratches. The other driver’s name was not learned.

Truck Accident Delays Paper Shipment Near Rushville

A Container Corporation truck from Cincinnati carrying 19,000 lbs of paper broke an axle at the Second Street and Buena Vista Avenue intersection in Rushville Sunday morning. Another truck was dispatched to reload the paper and bring it to this mill. The driver was Clayton Burdette.
