Mr. and Mrs. James Wright and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ruby of R. 2 Carthage returned Tuesday from an eight day vacation at a resort in Iron Bridge Canada.
Rev. and Mrs. Timothy Straub and their two children Timothy Jr. and Julie relocated last weekend from Marion to the Walnut Ridge Friends parsonage at Third and East Streets in Carthage. Rev. Straub has served as minister at Walnut Ridge for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Harrold and daughter Linda returned home last Wednesday from a short vacation visiting Cumberland Gap Smoky Mountains Lookout Mountain Tennessee and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky en route back.
Mr and Mrs Caleb Marsh and Mr and Mrs Keith Ray joined the Marsh and Ray families at a Cincinnati versus Milwaukee baseball game in Cincinnati last Wednesday evening.
A girl was born Sunday at Rush Memorial Hospital to Mr and Mrs Jack Collins of Knightstown.
Mr and Mrs Clyde Elmer Ruby and Mr and Mrs Robert McKain returned to their homes on Saturday after a week of vacation spent in Michigan and Wisconsin.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Akers with sons Gary and Steven returned home Friday after a week in Florida. They stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Blessinger in Tampa during the vacation.
Mrs. Howard Windsor Kelly Veach Dean Gardner and Mrs. Tom Snell of New Castle attended last Thursday night to see Flower Drum Song at Butler Bowl in a local cultural outing.
Mr and Mrs Delmer Sipes and daughter Patricia with Mrs Faurote of Shelbyville travel to Gainsville Florida for two weeks to visit their daughter and family Mr and Mrs Marshall Monkland and baby son.
Mr and Mrs Ralph DeBoard and their children returned home this week after a two week vacation. They visited Mr and Mrs Hilgar Davis of Head of Grassy Kentucky and Mr and Mrs James Hogge and daughter in Moorhead Kentucky. During the second week they stayed with Mr and Mrs John Erndt in Mansfield Ohio.
A cook-out was enjoyed Sunday evening by Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dyer, Mr. and Mrs. George Fancher, Max Fancher, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fancher and son, all of Arlington, Mr. and Mrs. James King and children of Milroy, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Brown and family, David and Christine Kendall, Mr. and Mrs. Worth Pitts and children, Sandra Stevens, Deryl Souder and son and Mrs. Paul Souder, Carthage.
Miss Linda Wells and Steve and Mike McClurg attend church camps at Quaker Haven near North Webster from Sunday to Friday. They belong to Carthage Friends Church.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Kennerly and their children moved from Knightstown to 201 North Main Street Carthage over the past weekend.
Mayport Florida reports Richard E Wells fireman third class USN, son of Mr and Mrs C V bie of Carthage Indiana, serving aboard the radar picket destroyer USS Hawkins operating out of Mayport. The ship and crew returned from six weeks of training at Guantanamo Bay Cuba and are preparing to rejoin the Atlantic Fleet for duty.
Mr and Mrs Bill Todd of Carthage announce the birth of a daughter Lillian Marie weighing seven pounds fourteen and a half ounces. She arrived August 16 at Rush Memorial Hospital. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Bill Renner of Indianapolis and Mrs Velma Todd of Carthage.
The Fall Festival group met to map a three day event for September 27 to 29. Co-Chairmen Frank Hampton and Hugh Trowbridge led discussions with 18 to 20 leaders and organization reps. A two night Talent Show is planned with John Allen Ruby chairs and auditions underway.
Congressman Ralph Harvey returns to the 10th District during a 10 day recess to consult with constituents on Foreign Trade, United Nations Bonds and Public Works bills. He plans to visit all ten counties this week to discuss upcoming legislation before adjournment mid September.
Bush Field Georgia hosts Air Force reservist Major Richard E Morgan of Knightstown Indiana among personnel from the 434th Troop Carrier Wing Bakalar AFB Indiana. He serves on annual active duty for the Swift Strike II combat training exercise spanning North and South Carolina. He is a C-119 Flying Boxcar transport pilot, employed by Sharp Oil Company Knightstown, and married to Frances Ellis Rushville Indiana.
All 4-H Needletwisters who completed projects this year and will travel to the State Fair should meet at Carthage School at 9 a.m. The bus will return at 4 30 p.m.
Mr and Mrs Lloyd Manuel and their two sons returned home Monday evening after a five day vacation. They visited Lake Freeman and Misha waka to see Mr and Mrs Lawrence Richter and family.
Mrs Forrest Moore and Mrs Albert Ray attended a district dinner meeting of the Indiana Federated Garden Club last Thursday at the home of Mrs Murray McKee in Columbus Indiana.
Dean Gardner of Carthage Kelly Veach Kent Scherschel of Bedford and Sid Johnson of Borden were weekend guests of Mike Butterfield at Valparaiso. On Saturday they attended the Chicago Music Festival in Chicago. On Friday Mr Scherschel and Mr Johnson were luncheon guests of Dean Gardner.
Miss Sue Siler returned home after a ten day outing with the Methodist Youth Fellowship group of 17 from the Conference area. The camping and hiking trip took place in the Smoky Mountains. Each member walked about 34 miles during the supervised excursion.
Indiana State Fair activities include a Post Office exhibit with Santa letters tax help and driving tests, plus historical postal data and commemorative stamps. The Pioneer Farm and Home Show features a McCormick reaper replica and milestones in American agriculture. The fair runs August 25 to September 5 with horse and pony shows for 4 H as well as leadership changes in the Grandstand staff following a death.
Carthage and St. Paul couples spent the weekend in Nashville and attended the Grand Ole Opry. Brian Wright stayed with his grandparents Hugh and Elizabeth Weber until Tuesday as James and Angela Wright vacationed. Indianapolis guests, Mr and Mrs Grant Hampton and daughter, joined Mr and Mrs Frank Hampton and son for a Sunday visit.
Carthage School schedules an eight twenty five to three thirty day, Friday August 31, for grades seven through twelve in the large study hall on the second floor, with tentative grade teacher assignments posted on doors. Faculty meetings precede the opening. hot lunches begin September 4 with prices listed and weekly tickets urged.
Mr and Mrs John Cass welcomed daughter Christa Jo born June 23 1962 and she joined them at home last week visiting the Casses in the company of her relatives in Greenfield and Greencastle Indiana. They visited Mrs Cass' parents Mr and Mrs Delmer Sipes and daughter Sunday evening. The Lukens family spent Sunday with the Thorpe family in West Alexander Ohio. Mr and Mrs Roy Stanley and Reta were guests of Mr and Mrs Bob Stanley and their daughter Sunday evening in Greenfield. Mrs Virginia Wells and Mrs Ethel Collins attended a family event in Greencastle Indiana. Rev Jack Wallace hosted dinner with Frank Stampfle and daughter Edith from Indianapolis and their hosts Bryan and Terry Wallace.
A teachers organization meeting is scheduled for August 30 1962 at the Court Room Court House Rushville Indiana starting 9 00 A M. The program includes greetings devotional remarks on education partnerships exhibits election of delegates and sessions on Americanism home economics music coaching mathematics and elementary teaching with a luncheon at Durbin Hotel and a principals session in the afternoon.
Ralph Edwards, noted radio and TV personality, is appointed 1963 National Crusade Chairman of the American Cancer Society. He will lead fund raising and education during April and continues a long history of public service with the Society. Edwards, creator and star of This Is Your Life, has supported Crusade activities nationwide and headlines include prior recognition in 1959. He heads a Hollywood production office and resides in Beverly Hills with wife and three children.
Mr and Mrs Rex Edwards and their sons Jeff and Skipper plus Mr and Mrs Carl Edwards and son joined by Mr and Mrs Paul Edwards and their sons for a weekend at Vevay where they enjoyed boating on Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Richard Weidner and their son moved this week from Carthage to R R 5 Rushville, updating their residence with a family relocation.
Members of the Amicitia Club of Mays and their guests enjoyed the Starlight Musicals Friday night watching Flower Drum Song. Attendees from near Mays included Mr and Mrs Hugh Weber Mr and Mrs William McDaniel Mr and Mrs Max Hall Mrs Glen Retherford and Mrs Lucille Reeves. Rushville residents included Mr and Mrs Harold Wagoner and nieces Jennifer and Carol Lou.
The Carthage Better Business Association hosts a Midnight Sale and Record Hop on Friday night August 24 from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Public Square. Prizes will be drawn at midnight, 1 a.m., and 2 a.m. Must be present to win. stores open including nonmember shops. William Mills will DJ.
Field men report good to excellent fishing in most areas while southwestern streams stay low and murky. In Indiana, catfish and white perch fill White River Hindostan Falls and Williams Dam. bass and bluegill in stripper pits. Ferdinand State Forest lakes show slow fishing but clear water. Southeastern Indiana reports best fishing this year with clear streams and crappie bluegill and catfish. East Central Indiana notes clear streams with channel catfish biting. lakes yield crappie and bluegill with minnows and worms. West Central Indiana sees clear waters and diverse catches including catfish bullheads crappie bluegills rock bass from night crawlers and minnows. Northeastern Indiana reports fair streams and rivers with bluegill crappie and some pike. several lakes clear and productive. Northwestern Indiana reports good fishing with bluegills and walleyes on Kankakee River. St Joe and Tippecanoe rivers hold bass catfish and northern pike. Willow Slough area slows though water remains excellent.
Mr and Mrs Howard McCorkle announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Donna Jean to Del Monte Wagner on Sunday August 26 1962 at 2 30 pm at Carthage Christian Church. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. No invitations were sent out.
At a special meeting on August 12 1962 the Tweedy Memorial Center Board awarded a furnace contract to Huderson Heating and Plumbing Co Knightstown. Work began removing the old unit and the center seeks $2300 more to finish the installation with a current furnace fund balance of 5000 plus 720 pledged. The board calls for community support at the upcoming Fall Festival to complete the project.
Democrat candidate John E. Mitchell announces a nonpolitical 15 minute to one hour budget presentation drawn from Budget in Brief for Fiscal Year 1963. The program analyzes government spending with visual aids and is available to clubs groups and the general public in Shelbyville Indiana. Following a public hearing on August 6, 1962, Indiana Director of Conservation Donald E. Foltz announced fur bearing seasons from September 1, 1962 to September 1, 1965. Raccoon opossum skunk mink and muskrat take opens November 15 at noon and closes January 31 at noon, shortening the prior season by 15 days. Hunters may possess fur until five days after the close. Raccoon with dogs runs September 1 to November 1 and February 15 to April 15, with permitted wild coon chases allowed year round from September 1 through the first weekend in May.
