On the Beat reports Mr. and Mrs. Robert Winters and their three sons left Saturday August 11 for a vacation at Lake Freeman Monticello Indiana. The Fletcher Methodist Church announces its Sunday School picnic will be held Sunday August 26.
Mr and Mrs Omer Heim and son Rick visited Mr and Mrs Robert Wolfe and son Joe in Hammond Illinois. They saw the stage production Music Man at the Summer Theater in Sullivan Illinois on Saturday afternoon. Joe Wolfe has the juvenile singing lead in the Broadway production.
Mesdames Eugene I Gardner Worth Pitts Ralph Pearson Dale Earnest Dean Gardner and Kelly Veach attended the Carol Burnett Stage Show of Starlight Musicals at Butler Bowl last Thursday evening Jr and Mrs A W Winfield attended the Carol Burnett Show at Butler Bowl Indianapolis on Sunday night
Mrs. Lee Patton and children Rick and Mary returned by train Tuesday from Burley Idaho after a three week vacation with Mrs. Patton’s parents Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Kelsey and other relatives in Utah. Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt and daughter Pam returned to Carthage from a nine day trip to Thousand Islands St Lawrence Seaway and Vermont. Births were recorded at Rush Memorial a girl to Mr and Mrs Bradley Conley of Carthage R R 1 and a girl to Mr and Mrs Edwin Mosfield of Carthage born last Thursday August 9.
Mr and Mrs Robert McCorkle and their son Robbie and his parents Mr and Mrs Earl McCorkle of Carthage returned home Saturday from a week long trip and vacation with Mr and Mrs Joper Morse and two sons at Danville Vermont Sight seeing was enjoyed in several New England states.
Mr and Mrs Larry Morris and daughter Jeri Jan moved to Wabash Indiana where Mr Morris will teach at Wabash Junior High. Their relatives Mike and Marvin Heim will live with the Morris family and attend North Manchester College starting their freshman year on September 3 1962.
Thirteen Carthage School girls travel to Indianapolis this week for baton twirling camp at Butler University. Attendees include Cindy Brooks Marian Pitts Cynthia Pearson Jenny Eoff Marsha Magee Sally Bush Patricia Sipes Bonita Gatewood Cheryl Magee Susan Skinner Patty McCorkle Judy Fannin Pam Clark.
Arlington High School won first place in the Class B division at the South Central Indiana High School Band contest held at the Shelby County Fair. Greenfield captured Class A honors. Each winner received a trophy and 100 dollars. Carthage of Rush County finished sixth in Class B.
Mr and Mrs John Rhoades and their daughter Lori moved this week from the Walter Chonau rental in Carthage to Charlottesville.
John E. Davis of Knightstown was fined 1 and costs 18.75 in JP Court Rushville on a guilty plea for having no operator's license. He was cited in Carthage last Saturday by Marshal Hugh Trowbridge. Judgment was withheld for Robert Miller, 36, of 230 North Hannah, arrested at 4:45 p.m. by city police on a public intoxication charge.
Teachers not yet contracted may delay final book lists and require additional charges after school begins. Music books will be ordered after school starts. Listed are per semester rental rates for various grade level texts and new titles highlighted.
Members of the Carthage Christian Church Men’s Fellowship met at the Nelson Cook residence for a work day. They installed a new cement porch and a roof, with several named participants and assisting women providing refreshments. The group described the day as a worthwhile fellowship activity.
Mrs. Faye Nowotne formerly of Carthage died Tuesday at her Scottsburg Indiana home after weeks of ill health. She worked at the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home near Knightstown and had just taken a leave of absence. Several brothers and sisters survive. Funeral services were held Thursday in Scottsburg with burial at Asbury Cemetery Morristown where the Carthage Eastern Star conducted graveside services.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Trowbridge spent Tuesday to Saturday visiting Cincinnati and nearby points of interest for a brief vacation spending a few days away from home last week.
Sara Jane Hunt of Carthage attended Ball State Teachers College last week for freshman orientation and fall class enrollment. Lou Ella Magee of Carthage also attended for orientation and enrolled in fall classes, planning to major in history at Ball State.
James Webb and his father Everett Webb along with Bayard Baker and Tom VanDyne returned home Friday after a two week trip visiting several Florida cities and beaches.
Indiana State Fair harness events run August 31 to September 5 with night races on September 1 and 4. Horseman Futurity on September 4 previews the Little Brown Jug, featuring top trotters and pacers like Coffee Break and Gallant Hanover. Fox Stake, Hambletonian link, and Fox Stake contenders headline the 1962 program with ticket prices from 1.00 to 3.50.
A revised edition of the official publication Postage Stamps of the United States covers all stamps from 1847 to 1961. It includes plate numbers, quantities, designers, engravers, first day sites and dates, and tables of sales and cover data. The booklet sells for $1.25 domestic and $1.56 foreign, via Superintendent of Documents GPO Washington 25, with payment by money order or check.
Carthage Home Garden Club members and families held a Tuesday evening picnic at Pitts Ford with twenty five people present. Jerry Byers of New Castle entertained with four ventriloquist numbers as a guest of his grandmother Mrs. Iva Cook.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Winslow of Carthage observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday August 19 at Carthage Friends Church from 3 to 5 p.m. They were married September 26 1912 at her parents home south of Columbus. They lived near Greenfield until 1919 then moved to southwest of Carthage. They have four children Howard Jr Paul Robert and Philip and nine grandchildren. Gifts are requested to be omitted.
Mr and Mrs Claude Pearson and family returned to their Carthage home Friday after a week in Burton Kansas visiting Mr and Mrs Frederick Jones and daughters. Mr Jones and Mr Pearson were buddies in the Air Force in India during World War II. En route home they visited Colorado Springs and Boys Town at Omaha Nebraska.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Davis and daughter Ruth returned home after a three week trip to the west. They stayed three days with Mr. and Mrs. A O Hooten in Inglewood California, four days at The Dallas Oregon, visited Guy Gahimer, Vel daughurs and en route to Seattle visited the World's Fair and Yellowstone National Park.
The Carthage Brotherhood and Sisterhood will hold its regular meeting Monday August 20 at 7 30 pm in the Community Center. By laws changes will be read at the gathering.
Mrs Maxine Riggs and Mrs Reveal attend the Geeting Summer Tent Theater production Yes My Darling Daughter starring Frances Farmer. Also appearing are Mrs Margaret Sparks, formerly of Carthage, and local guests from Anderson.
The Carthage Merchants closed their season after a 15–14 record in 29 games and district loss to Wolfs Farm. Fred Magee led with a .317 batting average in 21 games, edging 1961 champ Bob McCorkle. The roster notes a five year core and a history of Rush County and Arlington League titles.
At a Community Center Board meeting Hugh Trowbridge and Frank Hampton were named co chairmen of the Carthage Fall Festival to be held September 27 28 and 29. An organizational meeting at the Community Center Monday at 8 p m will name activity chairmen and outline plans. Members and representatives from local clubs churches and organizations are urged to attend.
Funeral services were held for William Eugene Andis Jr. who died when he walked into the path of a slowly moving ice cream truck in Greenfield. Driver Erwin Eugene Stevens, 47, claimed no sight of the child and was not held. The infant, born in Greenfield on April 20, 1961, left surviving parents and extended family in Carthage and Greenfield.
Mr and Mrs Jack Tweedy and children Kim Jay and Gray returned home Tuesday from a several days stay and trip to Gatlinburg Tennessee.
The Geeting Summer Tent Theater at Anderson presented Frances Farmer in Yes, My Darling Daughter last week with the Madison County Dramatic Players in the cast. Mrs Margaret Sparks formerly of Carthage also appeared in the show. Elsie Williams Reveal, a former Carthage School graduate, sits on the Summer Theater board of directors.
