A second important meeting of the Fall Festival committee and all interested in the coming event will be held Friday night at 8 p m in the Cen ter basement. Co chairmen urge all special events chairmen to attend and present their plans.
Warnie Mann, a farmer near Carthage, accuses a known fence buster of tearing down several rods of his fence last Friday night. He warns the culprit to come forward and make amends or face consequences.
Mrs. Sarah Arnold of Indianapolis is staying with her sister Mrs. Oliver Earnest this week. Mr and Mrs Joe Binford of Peru Indiana visit the Earnest home Wednesday through Friday.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service will meet on Thursday September 6 at the Methodist Church. Hostesses will be Mrs. Robert Winters Mrs. Oliver Barnest and Mrs. Ralph Mosier. Mrs James Wells-Lesson.
Mr and Mrs Odest Logan and daughter Bernice returned from a two week vacation visiting Ow ney Draper in Traverse City Michigan and Logan relatives in Bucyrus Ohio Vanceburg Kentucky Head of Grassy Kentucky and Ironton Ohio with Ada Logan joining to meet Ray Massie and sons.
Miss Ruth Henley of Carthage and her friend Helen Hawkins completed a twelve day Indiana University tour with 36 participants. They traveled by air from Indianapolis to Dallas then to Mexico City for a jet guided itinerary visiting multiple cities and sights before returning to Dallas and Indianapolis.
The Mosier Bruner reunion took place Sunday August 26 at the Joe Bruner Pond near Sandusky. Attendees from this area included Mr and Mrs James E Mosier Mrs Mike Watkins and son Miky and Mrs Ralph Mosier.
James McGeorge of Carthage R A 2 fell Saturday on his porch and broke his right hip. He was taken to Rush Memorial Hospital where his room number is 224.
Marine Officer Candidate Ronald L. Gatewood, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Gatewood of Carthage Indiana, completed the six week senior platoon leaders course at the Marine Corps Schools in Quantico Virginia on July 21. The program trains college graduates for commissions in the U S Marine Corps, leading to a second lieutenants designation and a 26 week Officers' Basic School course.
Mrs. Anna F. Downey, 72, of Arlington and former Rush County recorder, died Friday morning at Rush Memorial Hospital after two weeks as a patient. born February 15, 1890, she married O. F. Downey in 1908. he died in 1930. Survived by two sons, two daughters, a brother, 15 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. two daughters preceded her in death.
Superintendent's office issues the 1962 63 school calendar with dates for staff meetings, holidays, six week blocks, attendance reports, contests, vacations, and the end of the first semester. Major events include Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas vacation, end of 3rd and 4th six weeks, spring vacation, and final day of school.
Mr. Harry Lynch of Carthage visited by his son John and Mrs. Lynch entered Rush Memorial Hospital on Monday for observation. Mike Geise, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Geise, went to St. John's Hospital in Anderson on Monday and underwent major surgery on Tuesday and is progressing well. Mrs. Ralph Truitt was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati on Thursday for surgery.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Edwards of Carthage are the parents of a 7 lb 11 3/4 oz daughter named Sandra Kay born Thursday August 23 1962 at Rush Memorial hospital.
Among those from here attending sessions of the Democratic Editorial Association meeting last weekend at French Lick were James Webb, Jack Tweedy, John and David Ruby, Mrs Gladys Tucker and son Tom and Kelly Veach.
The afternoon bridge club met last Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Guy Ewing following a noon luncheon at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville. Those present were Mesdames Harold Ruby H. E. Henley Thomas Bush Ross Tweedy W. A. Winfield Herbie Beher and Maude Barbour.
The 76th annual Hunt reunion was held at Flora Hunt farm near Carthage with 67 relatives and guests. Mrs. Donald Ruby led the business meeting after a bountiful dinner while contests and songs entertained attendees from multiple towns. Officers for next year include Loyal Hunt president and Robert Hunt vice president along with Ida Jessup as secretary treasurer.
On August 31 General Telephone will switch the nationwide TWX network to direct dial use. Over 45 000 stations will convert to DTWX enabling direct dialing without switchboard connections, speeding service and boosting network efficiency across Indiana and beyond.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wood of Carthage and Mr. and Mrs. William Wood of near New Castle, along with Mr. Orval Weber of Cincinnati, attended the Saturday baseball game in Cincinnati between Cincinnati and Houston.
Mr and Mrs Bob Nigh and their children of Carthage returned Saturday from a weeklong vacation in Illinois and Indiana. They visited Virgil Miller and family in Mode Illinois Rev Chester Davis and family Easton Illinois Gerald Starke and family Walsh Illinois and stayed 200 in St Louis Missouri. In Indiana they called on Rev and Mrs Dean McCoy in Washington and Rev and Mrs A Faris in Carlisle and spent time at Shakamak State Park during the trip home.
The August meeting of the Methodist Fidelity Class was held Monday evening at Rev. and Mrs. Jack Wallace's home with a wiener roast. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt and Pam, Mr and Mrs Marvin Johnson and cons and Suzanne Lafuse, Mr and Mrs Jack Overman, Mr and Mrs Robert Walker, Mr and Mrs Bob Nigh and children, Mrs James Wells and daughter, Mrs Homer Hensler, and Mr and Mrs Carl Carson Jr and family. Contests were enjoyed.
Mr and Mrs Guy Ewing of Carthage Indiana plan a 50th wedding anniversary Open House on Sunday September 2 from 2 to 4 PM at East St Christian Church. They wed September 4 1912 at the home of relatives in Memphis Missouri. They are parents of three children William H Jule Maxine Ging and Merrill Pete with 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. They request no gifts and no formal invitations. The couple lived in the Carthage area their entire lives except one year in Hancock County.
State Auditor Dorothy Gardner accused the Welsh administration of unchecked payroll padding and diversion of funds from highway construction to salaries. She cited six months payroll increases and rising highway debt, warning that taxes will rise without budget cuts and urging the Legislature to curb statehouse spending.
Mr and Mrs Francis Lord and two sons of Carthage R R returned home Saturday from a twelve day train trip to Seattle Washington. They attended the World’s Fair for three days and visited relatives there. The family also spent time in Canada.
Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield with children and Mr and Mrs Marvin Johnson and sons spent several days at Lieber State Park and returned home Sunday from the trip.
Mr and Mrs Harold Dixon and their son returned to Carthage after a two week vacation. They toured historic sites across Illinois Missouri Kansas and Oklahoma visiting Lincoln Home in Springfield Truman Library in Independence Eisenhower Library in Abilene and Cottey College in Nevada. They spent the second week with relatives at French Lick and West Baden Indiana.
Indiana banks provided 220 million dollars in farm loans at the start of 1961, 4 percent above a year earlier, with 141 million in production loans and 79 million in farm mortgages. Banks held 65 percent of production credit, while life insurance companies, Federal Land Banks, and other lenders held the remainder. Dixon urged continued banker farmer cooperation to improve farm financing.
The Grand Circuit, a 19th century harness racing fixture, opens August 31 at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The circuit spans 11 states with 20 tracks and 27 week seasons, uniting owners for equitable stakes under a mutual board led by member tracks. The event offers a preview of major trots and pacers, including Hambletonian rematches and the Little Brown Jug preview.
Mr. and Mrs. Tives Fitch welcomed a grandson born Saturday at Rush Memorial Hospital. The infant is the child of Mr. and Mrs. Foster Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. Uni Fitch of Carthage.
Larry Jordan, assistant coach in basketball and in all other sports at Carthage High, is promoted to head coach to replace Norman McCloskey. A Winchester native, he joined Carthage last year after graduating from Earlham in 1961 and studying at Ball State. He will also teach social studies and mathematics.
Lafayette Ind 2966 new students enter Purdue this fall through advance enrollment from June 25 to July 20 about 84 percent of all freshmen and transfer admissions. Remaining 16 percent enroll during Sept 5 to Sept 8 delayed registration. Orientation Sept 9 to Sept 12, classes start Sept 12 at 1 pm. Ninety two Indiana counties are represented with 19 Rush County freshmen listed by curriculum and home address.
Mr and Mrs Bill Alexander with their children toured southern Indiana during the weekend visiting Santa Claus Land and the Lincoln National Park before returning Sunday.
Mrs. Thomas Shields of Carthage wins top awards in the Domestic Arts division at the Indiana State Fair with firsts in Men's Shirt and House Dress and high placements for quilts, gowns, and other handcrafts. Mrs. Leonard Sullivan Jr. of Ripley Township earns several honors including first in Pajamas and first in Boys Shirt. Mrs. Claude Butler of Washington township earns seventh in Apron Kitchen. The Mixer Home Demonstration Club, shown as Mrs. Lewis Lafuse, places third in special exhibits.
