Office hours during the last week of August and the first week of September will be 8 30 to 12 00 and 1 00 to 4 00 Monday through Friday. Students and patrons are encouraged to purchase books during those hours. Book lists will be available in the office after Monday August 24.
The 50th Moore reunion is set for Sunday August 23 1964 at Shadyside Park in Anderson Indiana with attendees and a reunion program planned.
Mrs. Robert Edwards of Carthage was admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Phillip Sattler moved from Rush Memorial Hospital to Jackson Nursing Home in Rushville last Saturday. Floyd Reddick re entered Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gilbert Tinsley of Carthage R R entered Rush Memorial Hospital. Mike Lafuse released from Rush Memorial Hospital Thursday. A boy was born Tuesday to Mr and Mrs Virgil Richmond at Rush Memorial Hospital.
William Clyde McMahan of Carthage was inducted in the Service Monday morning and was to report to Ft Leonard Wood Missouri for basic training.
Bob Edwards announces a Friday concert on August 28 on the school grounds lawn. All students are to attend and participate. The program features the new beginners band the junior band and the high school marching band open to the public.
Mr and Mrs Russell Leisure Mr and Mrs Bernard Dalrymple and Mrs Goldie Stewart attended the 42nd annual Leisure reunion Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs Scott Campbell near Elwood. A cooperative dinner followed by a business meeting elected Truman Leisure president Junior Leisure vice president and Florence Leisure secretary. Next reunion will be in 1965 at the new community building at the Rushville fairgrounds.
Mrs. Raymond Kennedy and daughter Judy Kennedy and Mrs. Lena Newsom accompanied Mrs. Norma Dillman to Owensboro Kentucky where they stayed overnight. Dillman had spent weeks with the Kennedy family and visited Van Buren and Marion with Newsom. On returning they called on friends and visited Rev and Mrs Dean Mc Coy at Francisco Indiana near Princeton where Judy stayed a week.
The Carthage Brotherhood and Sisterhood met Monday night at the Community Center with Roy Stanley presiding. Marie Tribby presented the minutes. one bill was approved and six new members were welcomed into the organization.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Brown and children Jerry and Linda of Carthage together with Mr and Mrs Tinsley Boggs and daughter of Rushville joined a Sunday boating excursion. They launched from Elizabethtown Indiana on the Miami River traveled to the Ohio River via Cincinnati and Coney Island before returning with several stops along the way.
James Russell Brown 64 died at his Henderson home Monday after five years of ill health. A Rush County farmer for 52 years, he was born November 21 1899 in Owen County. Survived by widow Bessie Ruby Brown and three brothers Erastus Donald Brown and Roscoe. Services conducted at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with burial in Glen Cove Cemetery Knightstown.
Friends Yearly Meeting was held last week at Earlham College in Richmond from Friday to August 19. Attendees from Walnut Ridge Friends Church included Loyal Hunt family and others. Banquets were held Friday and Saturday, with Rev. Gerald Collier leading the Walnut Ridge delegation.
Mr and Mrs Albert Steward and son and her mother Mrs Davie Hinton of Carthage spent Sunday in Moorehead Kentucky visiting relatives. Mr and Mrs John White called on Mrs Elmer Perkins at Rush Memorial Hospital and on her father Arthur Brunson near Willow Branch. Mr and Mrs Harry Hall Mr and Mrs James Tarbet and Mrs Ruth Privett of Rushville were visitors of Mr and Mrs Noah Leisure. Mr and Mrs Albert Terhune and family visited Sunday with Mr and Mrs John Durnbaugh and daughters Barbara and Alice at Wabash. Miss Karen Graff moved from Indianapolis to her parents home here this past weekend as roommate Judy Burrous wed. Mr and Mrs Robert Walker attended the wedding and reception of Nancy Meeks and Meadow Troy Hill at Springhill United Presbyterian Church near Greensburg. Mr and Mrs Oliver Earnest visited Mrs Perry Unger at Fountaintown Sunday. Bob Harrold of Purdue spent Sunday with his parents Mr and Mrs Richard Harrold and daughter. Sharlie Kyser Mrs Gouldie Kyser and Hattie Innis were dinner guests of Mrs Hazel Kyser in Indianapolis.
The Grand Lodge of Indiana unveils the first historical marker in a series honoring Freemasonry sites. The Corydon marker commemorates the December 3, 1817 Corydon Convention which led to the Grand Lodge, with John H. Jefferson attending. A "high hill" lodge meeting will follow near the Masonic Temple.
Incoming Indiana University freshmen from Henry and Rush counties and parents are invited to a Get Acquainted picnic Friday August 28 at Memorial Park Shelter House New Castle. I U alumni club Junior Division and Alumni Office sponsor the event starting 6 30 p m to answer questions meet new classmates and connect with others headed to Indiana this fall. Max Skirvin notes meetings aid students unable to attend earlier preregistration. William B Bain and William Rinne lead the program with local chair Taylor Morris 528 S 11th St New Castle.
Larry E. Fenner of Carthage R R 1 graduated from Elkhart University at Trinity Methodist Church on Friday August 7. He led in clinical lab analysis and placed third in X ray among ninety nine medical and fifty one dental graduates and will study until late September with no job yet accepted.
Linda Smith of Santa Monica spent a week at her sister’s home with Mr. and Mrs. Claude Butler and family and visited other relatives. Mrs. Georgeann Elliott of Madison stayed two days at the Butler home. Mr. and Mrs. Butler, Mary Gurley, Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. Smith also visited Mr. and Mrs. Joe McClurg and daughter near Vevay.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Edwards and daughters along with his parents Mr and Mrs Fletcher Edwards of Carthage returned Tuesday from a vacation trip that included Washington D C the World's Fair in New York City and other points in New York Canada and Niagara Falls viewing the Falls from the Canada side.
The Rush County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors, with the county Extension and ASC offices, will host a conservation tour on August 26. Starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Clarence Dyer farm in Center Township, the program will feature a grassed waterway and a talk by Don Sisson of Purdue on soil and water conservation benefits. The 2:15 p.m. stop at Mark Ellis farm will showcase a well grass waterway, a diversion terrace, multiflora rose, and wheel-track planted corn, followed by a 3:00 p.m. final stop at the Parker Somers Shields Group Enterprise Drainage Project to view open ditch, ditch-bank seeding, farm ditch crossing, and two erosion control structures.
The 1964 Carthage Fall Festival will host its second annual Queen Contest on September 23. Char les Elmore chairs with Cynthia Pearson as co chair, and the judging afternoon tea occurs September 20 at 2 00 p.m. Contestants wear afternoon dress at the tea and a long gown with a one piece bathing suit at Wednesday evening pagent. Miss Patty McCorkle 1963 Queen crowns the new winner. High school girls are urged to participate by submitting entry blanks to Cynthia Pearson by September 9.
Sgt Larry Marsh son of Mr and Mrs Caleb Marsh left Saturday for Fort Carson Colorado after a three week furlough here He recently returned from duty in Korea and is stationed at Fort Carson Colorado
David H. Ruby of Carthage Indiana will attend the 116th Ekklesia in French Lick Indiana on September 25 1964 He is a 65 Indiana University senior and serves as President of the undergraduate Phi Gamma Delta chapter Over 600 delegates officers and graduates expected for the four day event at the French Lick Sheraton Hotel Phi Gamma Delta founded 1848 has 88 chapters and over 72000 members in the United States and Canada
Mr and Mrs Cecil J Pike returned home Saturday after a three week vacation through the West. They rode U S 66 visiting Painted Desert Petrified Forest Grand Canyon Wupatki Sunset Crater Hoover Dam and Lake Mead then crossed into Southern California visiting San Bernardino Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. They stayed with relatives in Santa Maria Palo Alto and enjoyed Stanford San Francisco Yosemite Cedar Breaks Bryce Canyon Zion Grand Canyon North Rim Mesa Verde Million Dollar Highway Mark Twains Home Hannibal and Lincolns Tomb Springfield Illinois.
Mr and Mrs Robert Nigh and children Larry Warren Randy Carl and Debbie returned from a August trip visiting friends and relatives across Iowa South Dakota and Nebraska. They stayed with relatives in Chicago Webster CityMitchell Fort Randall Dam Murdo Badlands Mt Rushmore Custer Park and Cleghorn before finishing in Omaha.
Mr and Mrs Carl Foust of Carthage returned from a seven day visit to the western states. They toured Yellow stone National Park Custer Battle Ground in Montana and the Badlands in North Dakota. Leo Foust and Joe Foust visited from Markleville and Muncie respectively staying with the Fousts.
Ora Mattix aged 66 of Charlottesville area died 9 10 a m Friday at Hancock Memorial Hospital Greenfield after admission Thursday night He was born September 1 1897 in Henry County son of John and Clara Foust Mattix He married Cora Six August 31 1922 Survived by wife two sons Lawrence Mattix Charlottesville John Mattix Richmond two daughters Annabelle Powers and Kathleen Bever Charlottesville a step daughter Juanita Boring Adrian Michigan 11 grandchildren three great grandchildren One brother predeceased Funeral conducted 2 30 p m Monday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage burial Glen Cove Knights Town
Mrs Clara Belle Watson age 82 died Sunday morning at her home on R R 2 Carthage after a decade of ill health. She was born July 16 1882 in Sidney NL daughter of William and Mary Jane Anderson Jamison. She married Bert Moody in 1900, widowed in 1938, then married Joseph Watson in 1941. Survived by husband four children six grandchildren 10 great grandchildren one great great grandchild and a sister. Funeral 2:30 p m Tuesday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage Rev Paul Boulton officiating. Burial in Town Cemetery.
Carl V. Hardin 78 a longtime Greenfield farmer and Greene County native died Saturday night at Hancock Memorial Hospital He lived 62 years in the community He was a New Palestine Methodist church member and former Carthage Lions Club member Surviving sons Lewis Russell and Cherchel Hardin five grandchildren three great grandchildren four sisters and one brother His wife died in 1956 Funeral services were held Tuesday at Pasco Memorial Mortuary Rev Jack Pierce officiating Interment was in Park Cemetery
Mrs Forrest Beck president and Mrs Fred Sandefur secretary of the Carthage American Legion Auxiliary Post attended the Department of Indiana American Legion Convention in Indianapolis at the Claypool Hotel. Over 500 delegates were present with a Saturday banquet at the Indiana Roof and National Vice President Mrs Lowell C Allen as speaker.
