Cartage Fall Festival Dates Set for September

The Tweedy Community Center Board and officials announced the 1964 Cartage Fall Festival to run September 23 through 26. Roy Small is named Festival Chairman with Gary Stewart and Albert Ray as Vice Chairs, and other appointments were made. A public meeting is planned for Wednesday August 19 with all organizations invited to attend.

Carthage visitors enjoyed a weekend at Lieber State Park with camping and boating. Miss Rush County Competes For 1964 Miss Indiana State Fair

Sixty five contestants from counties statewide enter the seventh annual Miss Indiana State Fair contest. Preliminaries begin Friday August 28 with finals set for Saturday August 29. The winner becomes the fair hostess with public appearances until a successor is chosen and receives a 500 dollar savings bond, clothing valued around 200 dollars, and a large trophy. First and second runners up receive 100 and 50 dollar savings bonds respectively. Miss Sharon Lou Schreeg of Rensselaer crowns the new queen at the 8 PM Farmers Building program opening day of the fair, which runs through September 9.

Mr and Mrs Russell Shutt Jr of Carthage returned from a five week camper trip covering 9600 miles to Fairbanks and Anchorage Alaska. They traveled through the northern United States Canada and Alaska along the Alcan Highway and visited Mt McKinley and Dawson City panned for gold saw wildlife and returned with a six week old Siberian huskie as a souvenir.

Carthage Band Finishes Last at Shelbyville Contest

The Carthage High School band, formed after many losses to graduation, finished seventh in its class at the Shelbyville Fair band contest last Saturday night. They earned a trophy and 25 dollars. Judges listed Class A results led by Anderson Highland, Franklin, Shelbyville. Class B top three Van Buren Town ship, Cowan, Waldron. Class C place order included Clay City, Anna, Dillsboro, Spiceland, Fillmore, Carthage at seventh.

The Carthage High School Band, directed by Bob L Edwards, is officially entered in the 1964 Indiana State Fair Farmer's Day Parade. The colorfully uniformed band performs before a crowd at 10 00 AM on Tuesday September 1. Prize money totaling 665 dollars is awarded by the Indiana State Fair and the Indiana Farm Bureau Inc as part of the fair August 29 through September 9.

Marines participate in two Pacific Fleet training exercises

Marine Lance Corporal Charles L. Gatewood and Marine Private First Class Vergil J. Hendershott took part in counter guerrilla and anti-submarine training off California. The drills, titled Operation Banana Peel and Exercise Bird Dog, ran July 10 to 17 aboard the Big Bear region and USS Yorktown to test strike, air defense, and subsurface warfare readiness.
