The P T O will run a sale of used books at Carthage School on Organization Day Friday August 28 beginning at morning hours. Books for grades 1 through 6 go to the grade building and high school books to the High School.

Mrs. S H Lawson of Carthage is now playing piano at Wilhelm's Cafe Rushville on Friday and Saturday nights extending entertainment for locals.
Mrs Mary Draper and Mrs Ber ha Beck attended the 10th District Meeting of the American Lion Auxiliary at Selma Indiana Tuesday. The morning session featured district Chairmen delivering annual reports. After lunch the new district officers were installed by Mrs Mildred Murphy the new Department president.
Mr and Mrs Sam Gray and daughter of Carthage have moved from Carthage to the Dr Phieffer farm home on the Carthage Knightstown road Carthage R R.
The annual reunion of former students and teachers of Jackson Township schools will be held Sunday August 30. A pitch in dinner will be served at 12:30 at the Jackson Township School Building. No cards are being sent to local people. organizers urge word of mouth to ensure a large attendance for an enjoyable day. Maude Jones.
Rush County's twenty eight first year 4 H club members earned an expense paid trip to Cincinnati by Rushville National Bank for best first year record books. The group visited the Cincinnati Zoo and spent the afternoon at Coney Island with members from numerous clubs and accompanying adults.
Mrs. Maria Gray hosted several guests this week including Elizabeth Levis of Howe and Rosie Eddings of Kendaleville. Houston Texas couple Max Brown and Judy and Tommy visited Mrs. Marcus McClurg while Mr. McClurg and son planned a two week stay. Lobe Logan hosted his sister Mrs. Dave Fookes and her sons from Baltimore Tuesday to Thursday. Leonard Ruby of Fort Lauderdale Florida visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walker and Ed Ruby.
The Juniors of the East Church met last Thursday at 7 p.m. with eleven members and two teachers present. A social period followed with refreshments served, as reported by Vernon L. Little.
Gerald Mann 54 of Carthage died suddenly Friday evening about 7 45. He had heart trouble for five years but death was unexpected. Born August 19 1904 in Jay County he was the son of George and Elizabeth Mann. Survived by his wife Myrtle Nigh Roberts and former wife Ethel Stevens and a daughter Mrs Joseph Moore Charlottesville and a son Robert Mann Anderson plus a step son George Roberts Charlottesville. Also five sisters and two brothers and 12 grandchildren. Funeral Monday at 2 pm at Hampton Mortuary with Rev Robert Shockney officiating. Burial Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Ruth Hunt organist and vocal numbers by Mrs Stella Humes and Mrs Martha Trowbridge. Pallbearers listed.
The Chi Rho group met on August 17 1959 with a flag salute and Bible pledge. Jeanie Stapp and Linda Apple led songs, refreshments were provided by Tommy Manuel and Alvin Homes, and Karen Siler closed with prayer. Linda Apple reported.
The Carthage Citizen invites parents to have their children photographed for a feature showing future leaders. An expert photographer will be at the Community Center on Thursday August 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No charge to parents and no purchase requirement. Appointments by calling LO 5-5385.
Joyce Rhoades and several others attended a Cincinnati versus San Francisco ballgame Monday night in Cincinnati. Visitors included Mrs. Ann Parish and daughter Jackie in St Louis, and Mrs. Edna Kennedy with Judy and Lynn in Indianapolis on Wednesday.
Shelco softball team of Shelbyville dominated the District tourney final in Arlington last Saturday night defeating Ross Market 10 to 1. Pitcher Bill House held the opposition to one hit. Carthage exited the tourney later, losing 6 to 2 to Shelco in their opener. Fred Magee posted the lone extra base hit for Carthage.
Merrill Runion's renewal for the Black Bear Tavern beer and wine permit in Carthage was unanimously approved by the Rush County Alcoholic Beverage Board despite opposition from Carthage citizens and letters from the town board and Better Business Bureau. The panel lacked one member. final action rests with the state commission.
Howard Ewbank, county auditor, received a certificate from the State Veterinarian Office designating Rush County as a Modified Certified Brucellosis-free Area for July 11 1957 to July 11 1960. The certificate was signed by Dr. R J Anderson Dr L R Barnes and Dr R M Johnson. F R Lockridge praised local cooperation in the county testing program and thanked Rush County residents and leaders for their role in the effort.
The New York Central Railroad sought permission from the Public Service Commission to close its Knights town agency freight station in Henry County. Officials said nearby stations can absorb the traffic and the Knights town station is costly to maintain.
Vera McNabb Hazel Alexander Mary Draper Norma McKain and Bertha Beck attended the American Legion Auxiliary Department Convention at the Sheraton French Lick Hotel Indiana. National President Char les W Gunn spoke Friday. Mrs McKain and Mrs Beck helped with a Saturday reception for Department President Mildred Murphy assisted by the Carthage group. Mary Helen Dixon joined the Saturday reception.
Hugh E. Logan 23 of Arlington a former Fidelity Bank teller will be arraigned August 28 in federal court on a charge of embezzling 4920. Logan arrested Tuesday released on $2000 bond and allegedly used funds to settle debts per assistant U.S. attorney James L. Miller.
Rush County beef farmers dominated the Decatur County Fair with Golden Dawn Farms Ripley township winning multiple open show awards for champion and reserve bull and female, first yearling and herd honors. Shorthorn herds owned by A J Meyer and sons Noble township, Elmer Lessing and sons Richland township, and Richard McManus Jackson township earned numerous placings including champion bull, get-of-fire, herd, yearling heifers, and calf titles across Shorthorn and Angus classes.
Mr. and Mrs. James E. Wright of Carthage R R 2 announce the birth of a son, Brian Lewis, weighing 5 pounds 6 ounces, born August 12 at Rush Memorial hospital. The mother is Virginia Weber Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Weber of Carthage R R 2.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle visited her parents Mr and Mrs Fred Donoho in Indianapolis last Friday. Mrs Donoho is recovering from illness and has returned home from the hospital.
Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana resumes Saturday night modified stock car racing after a rainstorm washed out last week’s seven race program. Roy Robbins of Scottsburg Indiana leads the top ten standings with 1470 points as drivers like Bill Dugger and Stan Bowman chase him for the $1250 purse.

Trustee Wendell Adams and Principal announce Carthage School opens Friday August 28 1959 at 8 10 a m for organization day and book securing Kindergarten begins September 14 with age rules by October 15 1959 The complete staff includes high school and elementary faculty bus drivers cafeteria workers and custodians with residents listed for most positions.
Enjoy Vacations Mr and Mrs Stanley Hawkins returned home last Thursday from a ten day vacation to six eastern states. En route home they spent four days at Pleasant Lake near Angola Indiana. Mr and Mrs Carl Edwards and son Roy Dale and Mr and Mrs James Whitfield and children enjoyed a week's vacation last week at Turkey Lake near Angola returning home Sunday. Mr and Mrs Wm H Dixon and son Jerry returned home Sunday from a two weeks vacation spent in southern Indiana visiting friends and relatives. During their vacation they attended the Jass Festival held at the Sheraton French Lick Hotel and also visited Santa Claus Indiana.
James Webb and parents Mr and Mrs Everett Webb and Mrs Joseph Alexander of Carthage returned last Thursday from a fifteen day motor trip to Florida. They visited Daytona Beach Miami Beach and Clearwater and attended dog races in Daytona. On the return trip they spent time in Tennessee.
Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt and daughter Pam arrived home Saturday after a weeklong trip to Michigan and Mackinac Island Michigan with travel details noting leisure and family time.
Mr and Mrs Fred Parish spent four days last week at Silver Lake and Tippecanoe Lake in Indiana for a brief seaside style sojourn.
Mr and Mrs Delmar Sipes returned home Friday night from a ten day vacation driving through Illinois Wisconsin and Michigan. They spent several days at Hamlin Lake near Ludington Michigan with Mr and Mrs Sipes and were joined by Mr and Mrs Howard Windsor and daughter Rebecca Dawn and Mrs Maude Porter of Carthage who also vacationed at Hamlin Lake last week.
Royce Joseph and his son Mike stayed with Mr and Mrs H C Joseph in Commisky Indiana from Friday to Wednesday visiting family and friends in the town.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Land and daughter Vickie accompanied Mrs David Magee and her sons to Chattanooga Tennessee. They traveled from last Wednesday to Monday visiting Happy Valley Dairy Farms in Georgia Lookout Mountain and many historical battle fields in Tennessee. Mrs Magee and sons had been visiting relatives in Indiana.
Mr and Mrs W A Spence were guests last Thursday and Friday at Barbee Lake with their children Mr and Mrs Dewey Spence and family of Beech Grove vacationing there.
Mike and Marvin Heim sons of Mr and Mrs Clarence Heim have been visiting their sister Mrs Larry Morris and Mr Morris in McAllen Texas since July 28. Parents accompanied them and will bring the boys home around August 26.
Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hull spent two weeks away from home. The first week they vacationed at Silver Lake Indiana with their daughter Mrs George Roland and granddaughter Danette. The second week they visited friends and relatives in Osgood and Greensburg.
The Merchants Give Away drawing at Mill and East Streets tied to the Ergon Class fish fry awarded numerous gift certificates. Recipients include Joan Whitfield Hazel Roberts Martha Trowbridge Luella Magee Artie Clevidence Larry Fairchild and many others with several winners receiving two or three certificates.
Rush County former Purdue students announce the Fourth Annual Former Purdue Student Round-Up to be held Tuesday evening September 15 at Ball State University in Muncie. Damon Catron of Iowa State College will speak on Eaves dropping in Agriculture. Tickets are limited to 50, available from township chairmen or the County Extension Office.
The Rush County 4 H and adult Dairy banquet will be held Thursday evening September 17 at the Durbin Hotel. The banquet committee of the County Extension Office organized the program featuring entertainment and talks by 4 H dairy club members along with a travelogue talk by a local presenter. One club member will receive a 75 dollar cash award for a dairy heifer purchase.
