Mrs. Juanita Cox, longtime Carthage first grade teacher, will teach second grade at Riley School in Greenfield this coming school year.
Philip Manuel and Steve Ellis attended the Junior Basketball Clinic held last week at Taylor University in Upland Indiana. Lloyd Manuel and son Tommy along with Mr and Mrs James Ellis and children Jim and Carol Ann and Tommy Pearson attended the banquet and exercises Saturday night and accompanied their sons home.
A cooperative dinner and reunion of the Brooks family took place Sunday at Baker Park in New Castle. Attendees included Richard Whitfield and family, Beulah Whitfield, Harold R. Gulley and daughter, Frank Brooks, Lowell Brooks and family, Ted Brooks and family, David West and family, Charles Brooks, John House and son, Herman Morris, Louise Rihm and sons, Robert Whitfield and family, and Rudolph Mach and family, ranging from Carthage to Chicago and Knightstown.
Mr and Mrs Pat Watkins moved from Carthage to 218 S Martin St Muncie Indiana. Mr and Mrs Robert King and sons Gregory and Chris moved to the Gary Stewart property on North Main Street. Mr and Mrs Gene Wilson and son Bruce moved into a new six room house on Mays road near Carthage. They moved last Thursday.
Carthage Unit 316 sends Norma McKain Mary Draper Vera McNabb Hazel Alexander and Bertha Beck as delegates to the State Convention of the American Legion Auxiliary The event runs Friday Saturday and Sunday at the Sheraton French Lick Hotel in French Lick Indiana.
Army Reserve Specialist Five James B. Gray, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul M. Gray of Carthage Indiana, will complete two weeks of active duty training at Fort Riley Kansas by August 14. He serves as a supply specialist in the 727th Quartermaster Company based in Rushville Indiana and is a 1954 Carthage High School graduate and a farmer.
Robert Harrold son of Mr and Mrs Richard Harrold has returned home on Carthage R R from St Vincent s Hospital after a serious injury in a highway mower accident a few weeks ago.
Mr and Mrs Eugene I Gardner and sons Dean and J B Gardner returned Saturday from a vacation to Denver and Idaho Springs Colorado visiting Basil Hedgock formerly of Carthage. Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier and Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle came home Friday from a fishing vacation in Ludington Michigan. Rex Edwards with son Jeffery and Keith Ray with daughter Norrene vacationed at Lake Shafer last week and returned Saturday night. Robert Dean and daughter with Mrs Dean's mother Mrs Clayton Todd and daughters Patty Mae and Sharon ended a Lake Tippecanoe trip a week ago.
Dorothy McSherley longtime Commerce and Art teacher at Carthage School moves to Arsenal Technical High School Indianapolis as business education teacher for the next school year. She holds a B S from Ball State Teachers College and a master’s degree. Previously she taught in Cass County.

Burglars entered the Black Bear Tavern Monday night and stole 85 to 100 dollars. The loss came mainly from money in the cigarette and bowling machines and the juke box. Town Marshal Trowbridge and the State Police investigated.
Real estate transfers in Rush County amounted to about 233 000 in July after over 300 000 in the prior two months. Farm sales were few but totaled about 121 000. Rushville deals reached 68 000 and small town and suburban turnover around 44 000. July 1958 saw 251 000 and June this year 333 000. Notable transfers include Bert and Lenore Thompson to Harold and Jean Back for an unplatted tract at Henley and East streets Carthage and Charles and Joann Walton to Clair Wrightstman for Lot 25 Rose Hill Addition.

The M Y F held its regular meeting Monday August 10 at 7 30 p m in the church. Judy Kennedy presided and Sue Mosier reported 97 16 in the treasury. No old business discussed new business topics included a sub district meeting and the traveling cup bid.
Edward Meyer of Noble Township exhibited the grand champion Angus steer at the District Gold Medal Calf Show in Connersville on Monday August 10. James Readle and Phil Kemple, both 4-H members of Posey Township, placed with Angus steers and heifers. A. J. Meyers and sons exhibited the reserve Shorthorn heifer and wore top placings with additional Shorthorn stock. Seventy two Gold Medal calves showed at the Connersville event.
Carthage Better Businessmen's Association raises about 100 in certificates for a Saturday night give away tied to a Fish Fry by the Ergon Class of the Methodist Church on East Mill Street. Drawings start 7 to 8:30 p.m. must be present. associates not eligible.
The Chi Rho group met Monday night at the Christian Church with worship including the Christian Flag salute and Bible pledge. Karen Siler and Mariann Wachtstetter led songs, refreshments were provided by Susan Holmes and Sally Bush, and Arlene Ruby closed in prayer. The group discussed the Milroy Youth Rally on October 18 and plans to attend on time. News Reporter Linda Apple.
Mr and Mrs Otto McCarty departed this Thursday for Mackinaw City Michigan for a several weeks visit to the northern lakes region.

Rex Allen Stevens from Indianapolis stayed two weeks. Roy Stanley and daughter visited James Bonner and daughter in Coatsville. Harold Ruby joined George Paul in Anderson last Thursday. Bob Henderson of Greenfield dined with Lewis Henderson family. Frank Hampton and sons stayed with Avery Stevenson in Springville. Lindley Taylor and Louis Humes families spent a day boating near Cicero, Noblesville. John White attended Walnut Ridge Quarterly Meeting at Charlottesville Friends Church. Harold Gulley and daughter Dyana Lynn and Beulah Whitfield and son Mike visited Davis and Earl Sullivan in Markle. Della Rumple and sister Nannie McGrew visiting aunt Maude Miller in Lynn. Frank Bever attended a family birthday dinner for Bob Bever and Helen Hardin at Myrtle DeArmond’s home near Rushville. Myrtle Miner returned from Cincinnati after visiting Louis Humes and relatives. James Stapp and children of Bedford, and Chuck Jones and daughter from Chicago joined gatherings with Hampton and Guffey families.
Mrs. Donald Sparks and daughter Elizabeth Anne of Carthage returned to the States July 21 after a three month visit in England with her mother Mrs. A. E. Gillard and sister Mrs. Elizabeth Goodwin. They were met in New York by Donald Sparks and Anne Gillard and took a New England tour visiting Cape Cod Cape Ann and Boston. The group traveled home through New Hampshire Vermont and Niagara Falls. Mr. Sparks and Miss Gillard visited English friends in Baltimore and Washington D C en route to New York. The family spent last week at Lake George in northern Indiana.
Mr and Mrs Allen D Wood return to Indiana to continue schooling. Wood, discharged at Tacoma July 31, earned a 2200 scholarship from the National Science Foundation toward a master's degree. Mrs Wood, formerly Mary Lu Pike, taught at Orting High School and may pursue a master’s degree at Purdue.
After winning the County title for a second straight year, the Rushville league champion softball team faltered in Arlington. They lost to Fairland for the league lead and then dropped the opening playoff game. They head into the district tournament Tuesday night against Shelco of Shelbyville in Arlington. Fairland regained first in Arlington on Friday with a 15 3 win over Carthage, now 8 2 with two league games left. Carthage is 9 3 after its earlier win. In the tourney, Ross Market of Celina beat Carthage 6 1 to knock them from the running while Fairland clinched the season title. Lew Kugler had three hits for Ross. Carthage’s Stewart and R Magee homered earlier in the week.
Mrs. Roy Turner traveled Tuesday to Fairmount Indiana to attend the annual Wesleyan Methodist Church Conference. The event gathers church delegates for discussions and planning.
Mrs Ann Parish and her daughter Jackie visited Bill Parish at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri over the weekend for a family gathering and reunion.
Republican members met at the Community Center on August 11 and nominated a full slate for Ward 1 through Ward 6 council seats and Clerk-Treasurer. Royce Joseph chaired. officers Opal Moore Kennedy Rhodes and Odell Pitts were present. Donald E Bowen former appellate judge spoke on the need for good town leadership.
Roy Small appointed by Republican party and William H Skinner for Democrats to the Town Election canvassing board. Clerk treasurer Bernadine Morgan is automatically a member. Board will manage election details for two precincts under law. Both parties have held conventions and nominated slates.
The Richmond District Office of the Social Security Administration moves to 216 National Road West on August 15 1959 with opening at the new site on August 17. Serving Fayette Franklin Rush Union and Wayne counties the office plans a dedication and open house August 26 1959 from 4 00 to 6 00 p m inviting the public.
Indiana University invites incoming freshmen to a get acquainted meeting at 5 30 p m Friday Aug 21 at Westwood Country Club New Castle. Jane Pfenninger and Judy Neff host a swimming party and hamburger fry while Leroy E Hull and Max Skirvin represent the university. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. This New Castle event is one of several regional meetings sponsored by IU alumni groups.
