Joe Whitfield the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield underwent major ear surgery Friday at Methodist hospital in Indianapolis. He is recovering at his home near Carthage and is reported to be doing well.
Sam Nigh remains about the same at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville. Mrs. Stanley Hawkins is seriously ill and slowly improving at home after a week at Henry County Hospital. Mrs. George Moore is convalescing at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Max Ellis of Knightstown had major surgery last Saturday at Henry County Hospital in New Castle.
Mr and Mrs Marcus McClurg and Gary McClurg of Carthage and Miss Charlotte Mercer of Anderson spent a weekend in Chicago attending baseball games between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Mrs John Frump underwent major surgery Wednesday at Hancock Hospital Greenfield wife of Rev John Frump minister of the Little Blue River Church of Christ near here The report notes the couple reside locally and the operation was performed Wednesday at the Greenfield facility.
Finley Smith Jr., 22, Route 1 Carthage, cited July 15 by Trooper Kleiman for reckless driving on a county road southwest of Carthage. Fine and costs total 27.75 dollars.
Homer E. McMahan son of Kinley and Mrs McMahan entered the Air Force on July 17 and is undergoing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio Texas.
Sunday gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woods brought together many Apple family members. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. George Apple, Ola Apple, Russell Apple, Thurman Apple and family, Al Stapp and daughter, Larry Apple and daughters.
Fifteen Carthage guests traveled to the Emily Flynn Church Home in Marion last Thursday for a Christian Women Fellowship meeting led by Rev. Robert Kendall of the local Christian Church. Special numbers were performed by John Rhoades and the Kendalls. The group toured the building and delivered supplies and personal gifts for patients.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Patterson and son Gene of Carthage and Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Plank with two daughters of Anderson returned Friday from a week long camping vacation in the Smoky Mountains. They visited Lookout Mountain Chattanooga Tennessee and other nearby points of interest.
The Carthage Band Boosters extend the deadline to August 15 for community Birthday Calendar listings and calendar orders. Contact Mrs. Kennedy at 565 3705 by August 15. The boosters thank Mr. and Mrs. Cooney of Knightstown for a $10 donation to the band uniform fund.
Carthage family hosts a farewell dinner for their son Sp4 Bill Robertson who departed for California en route to Korea for about a year in military service. Guests included Mrs. Bill Robertson and son Max of Greenwood, Miss Sandy Davis of Greenfield, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Robertson of Columbus. Afternoon attendees were Mrs. Bessie Fisher, Mrs. Mattie Apple of Greenfield, and Ed Wagner of Indianapolis.
Mrs Louis Humes and Mrs Sharon Roberts spent Monday in Indianapolis on business. They traveled to the city for matters related to their work and conducted appointments during their visit.
The Mixed Doubles Summer Bowling League banquet was held at the Blue Bird Restaurant in Morristown. The Rubicanes consisting of Mr and Mrs Robert McKain and Mr and Mrs Clyde Ruby received the champion team trophies, with a social dinner attended by numerous members and spouses including Carl Edwards Ed Carroll Robert Mae Kain Homer Hensler Albert Ray Paul Edwards and others.
The Indiana State Fair will issue twenty five badge varieties for VIP staff during the August 25 to September 5 event. About 4500 badges will be worn by employees across fairgrounds to distinguish them from attendees.
Governor Welsh appoints Homer Schuman of Columbia City to fill the late Robert Moore’s Grandstand role on the Fair Board. Moore’s term would have expired November 10.
Additional parking facilities for 400 cars have been made available at the Indiana State Fair after removing the Nickel Plate railroad spur from the east side of the fairgrounds. This expands capacity to park an extra 4,800 cars over the twelve days of the fair from August 25 to September 5.

Mr. and Mrs. William Kinnett of Dillsboro spent Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hawkins. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hawkins and children of Muncie spent Sunday in the home.
The wedding of Miss Janet Hunt and Russell Shutt Jr is set for Sunday August 12, 1962 at 2 30 p m at Walnut Ridge Friends Church. Invitations extend to friends and relatives for the ceremony and reception.
The August meeting of the Friendly Circle was held Tuesday night at the Friends Church with Mrs. Maud Porter as hostess. A brief business session followed by a social and refreshments.
Lucy W. Hiatt 67 of Homestead Florida died July 21 from an apparent heart attack. A Carthage native and 1912 Carthage School graduate, she lived in Indiana before moving to Florida eight years ago. Survivors include a sister and three nephews. Her civic work with the Homestead Chamber of Commerce and St John’s Church was praised in a Miami Herald tribute.

Mr and Mrs Elmer Fenner visited in Columbus Indiana with Rev and Mrs Kenneth Kuebler and family. Dr and Mrs George McNabb hosted a birthday dinner honoring Dr George B McNabb. Houseguests include Mrs Anne Stager with sister Mrs Edward J McGarry from Morris Plains New Jersey. Reta Stanley stayed with Bob and Ruth Stanley in Greenfield. Various relatives entertained and visited across Greenfield Indianapolis Knightstown Pendleton New Castle Marion and nearby towns. The Carthage P.T.O. and local school officials organize a book store ahead of the new school year. Used books can be brought to the school office on August 20 and 21, with sales on August 23 and 24. No sale on organization day. A list of books will appear in next week's Carthage Citizen.

Bill Kuhn of Hancock County exhibited the Grand Champion steer at the Seventeenth Annual Eastern Central Indiana District Gold Medal Calf Show held August 3 at the Rush County Fair. Exhibitors from six counties competed with 158 Gold Medal Calves.
