A columnist visits Quakertown Bucks County and Washington Crossing Pa reconnecting with local prosperity crafts and streets. He notes sturdy Pennsylvania Dutch self reliance and stone houses with two foot walls. He also observes the Delaware Canal park project and a novel kitchen garbage grinder while debating modern gadgets and sportsmanship.
At Weakley’s camp north of Rushville last Friday night an inspiring dedicatory program and candlelight communion marked the conference. Dr J G Moore preached the sermon and new officers for the Rush county Young People’s conference were elected with Gene Woods as president and Phy lis Ann Baker as first vice president among others.
Arthur Jenkins of Farm Journal says drought conditions are not harmful to agriculture overall and may be slightly favorable. He notes agriculture is national and that 1936-37 farm income could be as high as expected, citing government statistics across states. Continued on page two.
The 4-H Needletwisters of Ripley township held their annual Achievement Day at the Christian church on Thursday July 30. Exhibits were shown and prizes of twenty five fifteen and ten cents along with red white and blue ribbons were awarded to the girls for their work. Jean Porter reported on the 4-H camp at the Boy Scout Reservation in Indianapolis. Tea and cookies were served after the meeting.

The Walnut Ridge Quarterly meeting will be held on Saturday August 8. Rev Frank Guyatt pastor at Dublin will be the speaker. Lunch will be served at noon. The afternoon session will be a business conference.
The speaker argues that players can quit but must follow rules. In any game, including life, the value lies not only in winning but in giving the best effort within the rules.
Knox argues the New Deal slowed recovery, citing twelve million unemployed and rising deficits. He denounces government control, currency experiments, and regimentation of agriculture while urging preservation of free enterprise and limited federal power. He targets the administration and appeals to American women and the broader public.
Rush county Agricultural association and Rushville Chamber of Commerce executives anticipate a full entry list across all classes for the August 13 and 14 livestock show. The finance committee reports $650 raised outside Rushville for premiums and expenses. Tents for all livestock except horses have been procured.
Members of the Home Economics club must enter canned fruit and vegetables in the county canning contest. Deliver items to Mrs Finley Nelson or notify Mrs Edgar Ruby or Mrs Ora Siler before August 12. Mrs Ralph Winslow, president.
The chimney at the Grant Henley residence was struck by a Tuesday afternoon lightning bolt during a thunderstorm. Bricks were knocked loose and soot spread inside the house, but Mr and Mrs Henley were not seriously frightened.
Approximately 200 spectators watched the Shelby county Coon Hunters association eighth race where Dirk the coon hound owned by Worth Pitts won. It was Dirk’s third win this season, at Harold Linville’s farm near Rays Crossing with twenty six dogs entered.
Connersville metabolism shows Indiana Republican rally with Col. Frank Knox and Raymond S. Springer as main speakers. Parade expects 50 000 attendees from multiple counties. Carthage Citizen joins nationwide straw vote. ballots printed for voters to cast locally and forward to New York for national tally.
The Carthage Town Board met at Town Hall with all members except Earl Addison. They approved bills, heard a report on ditching near North Main Street, granted Howard Henley permission to block sidewalks for demolition and curb work, and planned surveys of property owners along planned water main routes to determine pipe needs.
On Sunday the Friendly Circle sponsors a farewell picnic for pastor James R. Furbay and family. Sunday school and church members should bring baskets and table service and meet at the church at 9 30 a m. Charles Mosier will drive a school bus to Greenfield Park for those without transportation. A short service will follow. Children under six must be accompanied by a parent or older person.
Hubert Callahan of near Homer and Cincinnati Bible Seminary will speak at the Union service on the Friends lawn Sunday night. He also ministers to the St. Paul Christians church half time and will speak at Hannegan Sunday morning.
Tree judges were Alva Hurst and Elmer Collins while Bill Stoh ry and Clifford Jones served as line judges. The organization votes to skip a race during the Shelby county fair with preparations in place for a three day meet to be held next month.
The Prairie Farmer WLS Home Talent Show is set for Thursday and Friday at the Auditorium stage transformed into a hay loft. The Methodist church sponsors a large local cast with Regina Dunn as Lulu Belle and Donald Dunn as Uncle Ezra, with J R Behr and Raymond Manche announcing. The program rotates nightly with a Thursday mock wedding and performances by Skyland Scottie Patsy Montana Grace Moore Kate Smith and others from many towns, directed by Floyd Miller of WLS.
A brush fire occurred Sunday morning when Jimmie Henley burned papers in the Henley yard, igniting weeds. The family, dressed for Sunday school, formed a volunteer brigade and contained the flames. no one attended Sunday school, and damage was limited to the family.
