Carthage High and Jr. High baseball squads face their fathers in a Saturday night game scheduled for August 14 at 7 p.m. at the local diamond. Umpire is Coach Richard Truby, with Gene Richmond coaching the boys and Lewis Lafuse coaching the fathers.
Mr and Mrs Max Manche of Indianapolis are the parents of a girl named Carol Lynn born Friday July 30 at Community Hospital Indianapolis. She is granddaughter of Mrs Mabel Manche Carthage and Mrs Elizabeth Elmore.
Carol Ann Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ellis, returned home last month from a nine day vacation with her aunt and family Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Linder and son in Yakima Washington. She traveled to the west and back by jet from Indianapolis. In Washington she visited ocean front Seattle and the Paradise Inn Lodge at Mt Rainier and spent time with friends.
Mr. Irvin Hull aged 58 died of a heart attack and was buried at Washington Park Cemetery after a service at Moore Kirk Mortuary in Indianapolis. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Foster Wilson and son and Mrs. Robert Proctor of Rushville and Mr. and Mrs. Tives Fitch of Carthage. Hull was a brother in law to Mrs. Wilson.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Alexander and families from Celina Ohio vacationed at Richard Leiber State Park near Cloverdale Indiana the week of July 19. They toured Cincinnati visiting the zoo Coney Island and the Greater Cincinnati Airport and attended a Reds Astros game. They also visited Stanford Collins of Milford Ohio formerly from the community.
The Carthage Better Business Association held its regular meeting at the J and E restaurant with President Hubert Hunt presiding. Minutes were read by secretary Esther Magee as members voted to stage a Good Old Days Sale and Band Concert with bargains and old fashioned prices. a definite date will be announced later. Dues were paid and other business discussed.
The Rush County Farm Bureau invites members to an all day picnic on Wednesday August 11 at Mahoning Valley Camp Union Two. A 12 noon basket dinner will be followed by a program. A cake and flower show for the ladies offers multiple classes and deadlines. entries are due by 11:30 a.m.
Mr and Mrs Roscoe Davis have returned home after a week away with Mr and Mrs Phil Lip Smith and family at Walloon Lake near Petoskey Michigan. Their daughter Mrs Donald Smith and family of Franklin traveled with them. They also visited Traverse City Mackinac Island and Sault Ste Marie Canada among other points of interest.
The Carthage High School Band travels to Shelbyville for the Shelby County Fair Band Contest Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Carthage will perform in Class C, with sixteen bands listed in the lineup. Previous results include a 3rd place in Class B at the Delaware County Fair in July and late fair standings in Decatur County and Greensburg contests.
Carthage posted a 3 to 1 win over Arlington last Thursday as McCorkle delivered a triple for the winners and Muir and Parks produced a pair of extra-base hits. Arlington’s Stewart struck out eight and walked one while Tague fanned six for Carthage. Score by innings shows a tight contest with timely hits. S. Sam Nigh nurses a cut on her right hand received several days ago while working at the fountain in Windsor's store. The wound between the thumb and inside finger required eight stitches.
Mrs. Stella Humes spent Sunday through Thursday visiting sisters Mrs. Myrtle Miner and Mrs. Iyala Pfeiffer in Cincinnati. Mrs. Pfeiffer entered Christ Hospital for x rays and observation. Mrs. Humes traveled with Mr. and Mrs. Lindley Taylor.
Rick Patton son of Mr and Mrs Lee Patton sustained a scalp cut Sunday at the family summer home in Brown County. He was taken to the Nashville clinic and received seven stitches to close the wound.
Mr and Mrs Bob Nish and their family recently completed a four week trip visiting the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee Chattanooga Kingsport Tennessee and Waterford Ohio where they saw Leo Jordan and a former army friend during the journey.
Rush County 4-H families, home makers, and club members are reminded that state fair entries are due August 4 for all, with August 9 for 4-H members only showing in 4-H departments. Entry blanks are at the County Extension Office, and open division entries may be submitted by participants. All 4-H entries must be brought to and signed by an Extension Agent before forwarding to the State Fair Entry Department.
The Rumple Family Reunion gathered Sunday August 1 at Mrs. Della Rumple's home in Carthage. Attendees included numerous Rumple relatives from Carthage Knightstown Rushville Indianapolis Lapel Anderson Mooreland Lawrenceburg and other nearby towns.
4H Beef breeding Shorthorn junior yearling Kim Lafuse placed first with Craig and Melinda Lafuse third and fourth. Reserve Champion Shorthorn Heifer went to Kim Lafuse. In 4H Beef Feeding Shorthorn lightweight Mike Lafuse second, Kim Lafuse fourth, Mike Lafuse fifth in mediumweight, and heavyweight Mike Lafuse first with Craig Lafuse fourth. Reserve Champion Shorthorn Steer Mike Lafuse. Angus mediumweight Mike Lafuse secured first in steer, Champion Angus Steer Mike Lafuse. 4-H Beef Showmanship Honor Group named Mike Lafuse.

Several families hosted guests from Dillsboro Dayton Fort Wayne Evansville Indianapolis Knightstown Carthage Rushville Homer Moberly Missouri Greenfield and Greenfield.
Charles T. Addison 86 died at his Arlington area home after two years of ill health. A Posey Township farmer, he lived 42 years near Arlington and was a Friends Church member. Surviving are two daughters Mae and Marguerite Daubenspeck, a son Franklin, four granddaughters, and siblings. Funeral services were conducted at Wyatt Moore Memorial with entombment in East Hill Shrine Mausoleum. Indiana University expands regional campuses with new degrees and nursing program. fall enrollment up 4.7 percent to 12 833 students.
Mrs Forrest Beck entertained the Twice-Four bridge club last Thursday night with honers awarded to Mrs Noah Brooks Mrs Lindley Taylor and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle. Refreshments were served. Guests included Mrs Joe Graff Mrs Ralph Mosier Mrs Eugene I Gardner and Mrs Markes McClurg. Mrs Gouldie Kyser visited Indianapolis with Mrs Hazel Kyser.
Wayne and wife hosted a Draper reunion on Sunday August 1 at their Arlington Road home. Attendees included Logan Nelson from Carthage and many Draper relatives from New Palestine Evansville Knightstown Greenwood Manilla Rushville and Arlington. Logan Nelson was the eldest member. Bill Draper’s son from New Palestine was the youngest. Forty two people attended.
The Board of U S Civil Service Examiners announces an exam for clerks or carriers at the Carthage Indiana Post Office. Starting pay is 2.48 dollars per hour. Applicants must pass a written test and reside in or be bona fide patrons of the Carthage delivery area. Applications on form 5000AB must be filed with the executive secretary at 528 Federal Building Indianapolis 46204 on or before September 9 1965.
Mrs Ruth Cook visited Sunday with Mrs Esther Bodkin at Greenfield, sharing time and conversation during a local gathering.
Rush County students join more than 850 degree recipients at Ball State University summer commencement. Janet Marilyn Shutt earns a Master of Arts in Education in Carthage. Philip Garth John Mays Betty Lou Moffitt and others from Rush County receive master’s and education degrees.
Eddie Oldham of Center Two and Allen King of Anderson Two won top honors at the 4H Carcass Show held at Milroy Locker Plant on Saturday July 31. Eddie’s pig topped the heavyweight division while Allen’s took the lightweight class and also won the on foot carcass show. Judging was by Mr. Ken Drewry of Purdue University with assistance from Allen Snedegar and Allen King.
Garden Club members and families will meet Tuesday evening August 10 at 7 p.m. for a cooperative dinner meeting at Pitts Ford venue.
Rush County reports a Spring assessed valuation of 48,798,750 dollars, up 501,305 from last year. Auditor Arthur Malson prepared the figures for publication to guide 1966 tax rate decisions and notify taxing units for their budgeting steps.
Budget figures published on page 2 reveal 15 units with 10 showing higher valuations to set rates. Rushville Township leads increases at 284 250 while Washington Township falls 44 085. Carthage and Glenwood rise modestly with 8180 and 17870 respectively. Total county assessed value up 501 305 with 2811 taxable polls, down 42 from last year.
Advance sale tickets for the 1965 Indiana State Fair are available at more than 225 locations across 79 Indiana counties for 50 cents. Tickets at the gate during August 28 to September 7 cost 75 cents, with buyers saving a dollar for every four advance purchases. Stores and Farm Bureau offices will also offer reserve seat tickets and free official programs, with sales ending about three days before opening.
Members of the Mixers Home Economics Club plan a cooperative picnic today at twelve noon at Sunset Park Knightstown. Drinks will be furnished.
Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur White included Mrs. Dick Hurley and her children of Atlanta Georgia Walter Sharer of Clayton Indiana Betty Jane Brooks of Mays Indiana and Ed McGinnis of Anderson Indiana.
Mr and Mrs Herschel Bunce and Debra White of Anderson were visitors last Wednesday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Fred B White.
