The letter criticizes Congress for passing a flawed term in alowance bill for enlisted men, notes officers received cash, and accuses lawmakers of dodging responsibility. It urges enlisted men to vote against Congress in November and laments political greed and misrepresentation. It also covers memorial plans for Wendell Willkie and local notes on transport and small-town business ventures.
In a key league matchup the Truckers defeated the American Legion 6 3 behind Nelson Stephens who limited the Legion to one hit in seven innings. Legion pitcher Newman walked five and allowed six hits as the Truckers pulled away after the second inning.
A July 24 sale at Cowan's stockyards, Rush County, saw 103 lambs auctioned with 66.9 percent in top two grades. Double blues averaged 85.5 pounds and 22.3 percent. single blues 88.9 pounds and 44.6 percent. Red dot grade accounted for 30 lambs. Official grader Paul Gray of the Producers Association oversaw grading, with lambs shipped to Cincinnati. The next pool is slated for August 21 at Cowan's stockyards under the sheep committee led by Noah Webb.
Everett Henry, cousin of Mrs. Clara Delinger, was killed Thursday afternoon at a stone quarry. Mrs. Delinger visited the late home in Flora Sunday.
Mrs Gerald Stewart underwent surgery last week in Henry county hospital New Castle Mrs Joanna Gibson underwent surgery in St Vincent s hospital Indianapolis on Friday Miss Lillian E Henley in the Methodist hospital is getting along as well as can be expected from a fall she received a few weeks ago
Joseph E. Porter of Carthage announces his bid for Ripley township trustee in the November 5 1946 election. Porter a WWII air corps veteran who was shot down over France and evaded Gestapo for four months, has been active in civic groups and recently led American Legion Bertram Howard Post No 316. He joined the Lions Club and served on the softball advisory board.
In the June issue of the Purdue Agriculturist five profiles spotlight Worth Hudson of Center township and Lowell O. Norris of Rushville township. Both Rush county farmers earned their fifth Distinguished Purdue Ag citation and had their pictures hung in Purdue Agriculture Hall. Phil Winslow, assistant editor and Purdue agriculture senior, authored the piece.
Rushville Royal Community chorus will appear Sunday at 2 30 in the Community Center building under the auspices of the A M E church of Carthage.
Carthage Post No.316 dropped its season opener 11 to 8 in extra innings to Hagerstown. The loss followed a 7-5 lead in the seventh as errors and late hits doomed the visitors. Carthage had beaten New Castle 8-7 and had routed Rushville 9-7 prior to the final.
Lynch's Cafe opened Monday after a full remodel with redesigned dining room, booths on sides, center tables, rear counter, and larger kitchen. Full meals and short orders available, Meadow Gold ice cream noted. Lord's Super Market of Knights town plans a frozen locker and fridge for Schrafft's candies to serve shoppers in hot or cold weather. Cecil Hamilton notes no price increases at his shop. Rushville barbers raise prices for haircuts and shaves starting next Monday.
Miss Virginia Collins former Carthage High School senior and 1946 WSC award recipient has joined The Citizen as office girl and bookkeeper after a stint at RCA Manufacturing in Indianapolis. The article also notes the death of Thomas Magee 62 of Indianapolis from burns at a packing plant and his burial in Carthage town cemetery after funeral services in Indianapolis.
Thousands attend all sessions as Rush County Fair kicks off amid 4-H outings to Cincinnati and Coney Island. The outing, via B&O Railroad, includes Zoo visits and a steamer cruise with reduced fares. 4-H members, leaders, and sponsors plan the trip for August 16. Exhibits, hog and cattle shows, clothing contests, and prize-winning poultry highlight the week as community programs and church partnerships support events.
Oscar M Masters 68 father of Mrs Loyal Hunt died suddenly Sunday afternoon of a heart attack while visiting Memorial park in New Castle. He lived northwest of New Castle with his wife and family and had been ill for months. Survivors include four sons Emerson Cincinnati Orville Syracuse Virgil Utica and Paul at home and four daughters Irene Laikaitis Eileen Schneble Dayton Ruby Miller Shelbyville and Hunt Car. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at Davis Funeral Home New Castle with interment in New Castle cemetery.
Veterans urged to attend a mobile dental clinic arriving in Rushville at 9 00 am Friday August 9. Appointments via Red Cross headquarters 3137. This may be the only veteran dental aid in Rush county and the unit may not return. Rushville is among 69 towns to be visited by the unit.
A Middletown blaze at a Better Taste Popcorn elevator caused about 50 000 in losses, with 25 000 to popcorn and 25 000 to the building. Two Pennsylvania Railroad box cars burned. Cause undetermined. Anderson firefighters aided, state police investigated. A newborn son Gerald Hugh was born to Mr and Mrs Hugh Smith of Car.
