American diet guidance weighs calories for healthy adults

The Food and Nutrition Board recommends a desirable body weight and calorie intake to support heart health. Older guidance of 3,200 calories for a 25 year old man weighing 154 pounds has been reduced to 2,900 calories for lightly active individuals. Some experts favor increased physical activity over further calorie reduction. Exercise may offset degenerative disease risks, and a 3,200 calorie plus activity plan could yield better happiness and health than a sedentary 2,900 calorie lifestyle. Too many Americans eat too much and exercise too little, and overweight is unhealthy.
