Miss Bettina Murray of Indiana University and daughter of Mrs. William Skinner will vie in the semi finals of the Starmaker Revue in Cincinnati this Sunday. The show will be broadcast on WLW TV channels 2 and 5.
The Carthage American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a pitch-in supper and entertainment this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. All Legion and Auxiliary members and their families are invited.
The MYF invites youths aged 12 to high school to a Friday night pitch-in supper on April 24 at 6 30 in the new addition. Attendees should bring a covered dish. A film will be shown after the meal.
Rev and Mrs Marion Birch, recent Sierra Leone and West Africa missionaries, will conduct a one night service at Wesleyan Methodist Church Carthage on Monday April 27 at 7 30 p.m. DST. Birch comes from a missionary family with sister Marlyn a medical missionary and father Frank Birch the general missionary secretary. Public invited.
The Carthage Band Boosters held a regular meeting at the school Tuesday night with nineteen members present. Trustee William Skinner attended, praised the boosters and band director Harold Taylor for a fine year and discussed the forthcoming alumni banquet.
In observance of Rural Life Sunday on May 3, an essay contest invites elementary and high school students to write up to 300 words about living in a rural community. Judging will consider originality sincerity and neatness. Awards go to best essays by an elementary boy and girl and a high school boy and girl. Deadline is 3 30 Friday May 1 and essays should be submitted to the school office.
Mr. Ora Clayton, formerly a Carthage mathematics teacher and now a Westlane Junior High educator in Indianapolis, is one of three teachers honored this week. He won a National Science Foundation summer fellowship to attend an eight week course at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield for graduate credit.
Mr and Mrs Hal McCrum of Zionsville are parents of a daughter born April 15 at Lebanon Hospital named Leslie Ann. She is the great granddaughter of Mr and Mrs James Terhune of Carthage.
Church notes announce Rally Day on Sunday May 3 at Carthage Fletcher Methodist Church with speaker Mrs Helen Atkinson of Indianapolis. Also Cradle Roll Day observed at Carthage Nazarene Church this Sunday April 26. Logan Jordan wedding at Wesleyan Methodist parsonage April 4 lacked ring ceremony but rings were later exchanged.
The public is urged to attend a community meeting on Tuesday April 28 at 8 p.m. at the Community Center to discuss the telephone service petition and related issues.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma Rum mage Sale is scheduled for Thursday April 30, Friday May 1 and Saturday May 2 at The Citizen Office.
The April 22 FFA meeting led by Richard Jackson outlined a pest control contest covering rats mice moles foxes ground hogs pigeons and crows. Joe Foust announced six township canvassing areas for a Breeder's Gazette subscriptions survey with livestock counts on April 30. A community map project and an FFA family pitch-in were approved, with Marvin Mike Heim and Jon Smith serving refreshments.
Seniors depart for trip and hand school pages to juniors led by Editor Mike Watkins. Calendar notes include County Track Meet at Morton Memorial and National Merit test dates. Freshman and grade school updates cover classes, honor rolls, and ongoing band and drama plans.
Mr and Mrs Ross Tweedy and Mr and Mrs Jack Tweedy with Kim attended the wedding of Janet Sue Lykins, Mary Tweedy’s niece, to Thomas Murran at St. Joan of Arc Church in Kokomo on Saturday morning.
Mrs. Paul Scott was admitted Monday for major surgery on Tuesday at Rush Memorial hospital. Clayton Todd admitted Sunday night for X-rays and observation, room 146.
A town Democratic Committee convention at the Community Center nominated six ward trustees and a clerk treasurer for the November 3 election. Names listed include Thomas Gorman ward 1 George B. McNabb ward 2 Kenneth Bush ward 3 Helen Ruby ward 4 Nelle Beher ward 5 Lawrence Apple ward 6 Bernadine Morgan as clerk treasurer.
FFA and 4H members attended district meetings and contests in Union City and nearby areas. Dick Patterson and Ronnie Fannin led delegates to district officer elections. Carthage participants earned multiple placing demonstrations in soil testing plant care and home electricity.
Fred Howren 66 of New Castle died Sunday afternoon at Henry County Hospital after a year of ill health. He was a retired Chrysler employee, active in First Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge, and CIO Retired Members Club. Survived by widow Marie and six children, including M Sgt Thomas F. Howren, with funeral rites held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Rev J Thomas Frost officiating, burial at South Mound Cemetery. Eagles Lodge held special services Tuesday evening.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship elected new officers for the coming year at a Monday night meeting led by Lynn Kennedy. President Judy Kennedy and others were approved including Larry Fenner vice president Beth Roberts secretary Sue Mosier treasurer Deanna Carroll program director Jeannie Terhune and others.
The Shockney Accounting Service office has been sold to C. A. Winters of Connersville Indiana. The new firm will assume operations June 1. All utilities and collection facilities will be continued. Harold Hill attorney with an office in the same building will keep his practice there.
Fifty five members and families attended a ham supper and meeting at the Ripley Township Farm Bureau Community Center. Cecil Pike president led, Roy Stanley gave devotions, Ralph Truitt reported as secretary and treasurer, and a committee was appointed to attend an April 28 community meeting on the telephone petition. Howard Addison and FFA members gave four demonstrations. Cecil Pike shared photos from a western states trip with Mrs Pike.
Rush County schools will graduate 139 seniors with Manilla leading at 16, New Salem 39, Milroy 28, and Carthage 19. May 18 features speakers for Carthage and Milroy, while Manilla hosts baccalaureate with Rev. Maurice Davis. Complete rosters list graduates by town including Carthage, Mays, Arlington, New Salem, Milroy.
FFA members attended a district meeting in Union City for officer elections. Ripley Township Farm Bureau met to support coop effort and local telephones. Demonstrations were shown by four teams. gold medal projects deadline is April 30. A pig sale to fund youth swine projects is planned for May 23 in Rushville with proceeds shared among producers breed associations and the Indiana Commercial Pork Producers Association. Rural Life Sunday May 3 coincides with Soil Stewardship Sunday as part of annual reflection on blessings and responsibility.
Lydia Ella White 102 widow of Henry B. White and mother of Arthur White died at 8 30 a m Tuesday after a fall fractured hip. Survived by daughter Mrs Orville A Brown son Arthur White 5 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren and other relatives. funeral held at Pasco Memorial Mortuary with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
The Junior Young People group of the Christian Church met last Thursday evening with 19 members 3 guests and 2 leaders. Games were played outside after singing and prayer led by David Whitfield. Refreshments were served by Judith Zimmerman and Bruce Lord.
