Shirley Anne Lukens, 20, lost control of her car on the Carthage Knightstown road when a front tire blew out. The vehicle veered into a five foot ditch and struck a utility pole. Sheriff’s department investigated. damage estimated at 800 dollars.
Ronald Anthony Deweese aged 21 from Carthage and Geneva Brickles aged 23 from Knightstown obtained marriage licenses. Deweese works as a tree trimmer and Brickles is a seamstress.
A lightning strike hit Allan Proctor’s rural home southeast of Carthage around 6 p.m. igniting an electric heater in a closet. Firefighters arrived quickly from the Rural Fire Department and contained the blaze with minimal damage. Clothing and rugs were damaged.
The Proctor and Jessup families thank the Carthage Rural Fire Department and all helpers for efforts in extinguishing a fire at the Allan Proctor residence Wednesday evening. Your aid is appreciated.
A meeting on April 28 led to petitions to residents to oppose a proposed reduction of extended area free telephone service. The Carthage Business Association asks residents to sign quickly to complete the petition drive.
Twenty members attended the Carthage Lions Club meeting at the Community Center with President Jack Tweedy presiding. The group scheduled Saturday May 9 as a community cleanup day and heard speaker Robert Kirby, state joint representative for Rush and Henry counties of New Castle.
Roberta Dalrymple and five other women visited Ronnie Dalrymple, son of James Dalrymple, at the Indiana School for the Blind in Indianapolis last Wednesday. They toured classrooms, buildings, and dormitories with the school’s principal joining the visit.
Carthage Fletcher Methodist Church hosts Rally Day on Sunday May 3 with a special program and an attendance goal of 250. The invitation welcomes guests without a church home to attend the service.
Jim Terhune and twenty three Taylor University students joined a two day Chicago Fine Arts tour. They attended the Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert saw Dark at the Top of the Stairs and The Music Man stage plays toured the Chicago Institute of Art and visited the Pacific Garden Mission. The group stayed at the YMCA hotel in Chicago and returned to Taylor on Saturday night.
Forty guests attended the Carthage Legion and Auxiliary birthday supper at the Community Center. A large white frosted cake bearing the American Legion emblem centered the table. A cake walk followed with eleven cakes awarded and bingo for prizes marked the rest of the evening.

Nine Carthage women attended the district 10 Christian Women Fellowship workshop and dinner held April 21 at the Ben Davis Creek Church east of Rushville. Attendees included Ruth Jackson Maude Shutt Dinnie Moore Joanna Gibson Lesta Heifner Margaret Hinshaw Eva Wagoner Bessie Reddick and Ruth Cook.
Morton Memorial captured the third annual Rush County meet on the ISSCH field scoring 74 points to New Salem's 54. Morton star Donald Buckley set a school field and county record with a 47 feet 4 inch shot, while Lorenzo Beard swept two sprints and the broad jump.
Mr and Mrs Roy Turner returned home last week after spending ten days with Mr and Mrs Russell Turner and family at Ola Kansas.
The Carthage graduating class will be honored at a PTA pitch in supper on Wednesday night at 7 p m May 6. The public is invited and a program has been planned.
The Society of Indiana Pioneers plans a May 16 17 tour with stops in Greenfield Pendleton Anderson Munice New Castle Knightstown and Indianapolis routes. Participants depart 7 a.m. from the Indianapolis bus terminal heading to historic sites including Heekin Park the Henry County Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Society meeting venues with overnight and return legs returning via Lynn and Pendleton.

Franklin Clark of Carthage high school Gerry Chrisman of Arlington high school and Patricia Coons of Rushville high school won medals in finals of the 45th annual state contests at Indiana University Saturday April 25. About 1200 regional winners from 32 cities competed for top honors in mathematics Spanish English and Latin 44 first place gold medals 94 second place silver and 215 third place bronze. Coons earned bronze in Latin I Chrisman bronze in algebra and Clark bronze in the Cicero contest.
Leo Jordan, Carthage High alum and Ball State teacher, will address the Northeast Tennessee Section of the Instrument Society of America in Kingsport on April 13. He holds an M A from Purdue in mathematics and has worked at Eastman, RCA, and General Motors, later joining Tennessee Eastman. His talk covers computing history, hardware basics, equation solutions, and common problems in the field.
Nearly 70 000 homemakers in Indiana join the 14th annual National Home Demonstration Week from May 3 to 9 with the theme Today's Homemaker Builds Tomorrow's World. The program, run by the U S Department of Agriculture land grant colleges and county governments, promotes family living and practical homemaking through local events and outreach in Rush County. Local plans include an Officers Luncheon May 4 at Hannegan Church, week long window displays, and a May 9 Senior Team Rush County Girls and mothers as honored guests.
Bettina Murray daughter of Mrs. W H Skinner and a freshman Chi Omega pledge at Indiana University was crowned Rose Queen by Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. She will compete with candidates from other schools for the National Rose Queen title.
The Carthage Alumni Association plans its seventh annual meeting on May 16 with a banquet at the gymnasium. Over 600 alumni will receive invitations to attend, with 26 graduates this year joining as guests of the association after commencement Monday May 18.

Mr and Mrs Tives Fitch announce the birth of their son Dennis Jay, weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces, born Tuesday night at Rush Memorial Hospital. He is the grandson of Mr and Mrs Foster Wilson and Mr and Mrs Uni Fitch.
Mrs Leonard Sullivan Jr and Mrs Richard Harrold attended the Rush County Home Demonstration Council Meeting in the Assembly Room of the Courthouse at Rushville on Monday afternoon.
