James Carr, a junior, captured first place with Youth and Democracy at the annual high school oratorical contest held Friday night at Friends church. He received a silver cup as the top prize. Alice Ruth Hunt took second with Unknown earning a gold medal, while Helen Sparks earned a silver for Robert E. Lee. Honorable mention went to Donald Stoten and Betty Kinder. A. J. Carr donated the awards and presented them. Bayard Baker coached the speakers. The high school band, led by Mrs. A. J. Carr, provided music. Judges were Walter Hays and Beard Shirley of Pendleton.

Winners of the Henry L Stenger essay contest were named Sunday at the Rush County museum. Awards from Mr Stenger ranged from 1 to 10 dollars for five essays on topics including The Model of the Kennedy Bridge and The Blue Bull Monument. Judges were Mrs Titsworth Mrs Davis and Mrs Wagoner.
