Heavy rains last weekend and early this week caused the Big Blue river to flood hundreds of acres of farm land and flood basements in Carthage. The swollen river forced washouts on roads and bridges and delayed spring plowing while residents faced high water and perilous crossings.
Easter services were held in Carthage churches with large attendance. Guest speaker at Friends church was Errol Elliott editor of the American Friend from Richmond. Sunrise service and baptismal activities occurred at Fletcher Methodist and Walnut Ridge Friends church with visiting ministers from Knightstown.
The Ripley township Farm Bureau will meet at the school building Monday evening April 17 at 8 00 o clock. Oscar Newhouse of Rushville will discuss the proposed soy bean plant for Rush County. Entertainment and refreshments will follow for guests.
In Northern Ireland a Carthage Indiana corporal, Charles E Fairchild, now commands a 2000 gallon refueling tank truck ensuring timely aircraft takeoffs. Promotion notices follow for Walter D Howard also of Carthage Indiana, a cook, and several other soldiers. William J Henley Sr longtime Indiana lawyer and jurist died at his Carthage River side farm Monday April 10 after a long illness. Born October 15 1863 in Carthage he was admitted to the bar in 1885 and served as judge of the Court of Appeals chief justice at 33 and later led the Chicago and Western Indiana Railway before returning to law in Indianapolis. He retired to his farm in 1939 after health declined and resumed practice in Rushville in 1928 remaining active until then. He married Sara A Monroe of Rushville in 1885.
The obituary notes Judge Henley’s marriages to Myrtle E. Robinson and later Mary Elizabeth, with children Jane Gladys William Mary Elizabeth and Mary Elizabeth. Surviving relatives include Myrtle, two daughters from the first marriage, a daughter from the second, two sisters, nephews and a foster son in the Navy. Funeral services were held at the late home with Rev. Kenworthy and interment at Riverside cemetery. Pallbearers are named.

Final week of the school year brings 11 seniors to commencement at Carthage High School with eight ceremonies planned. Mrs Elvira McCorkle is reported to have suffered a stroke at her son Paul McCorkle’s home. She remains in serious condition under medical care.
Mrs. Ernest Wagoner of Walnut Ridge is critically ill after a Monday stroke, with medical staff monitoring her condition closely.
Mrs. Sarah G. Singer remains under care as she shows gradual improvement after a period of illness.
The annual oratorical contest will be held Friday night at the Friends church. Eight young speakers will compete for awards. Admission is free and the public is urged to attend.
All employees of the local Container Corporation will be entertained at a dinner in the Auditorium basement Wednesday night April 19. After dinner, games, contests and entertainment will highlight the evening with Ralph Mosier Mrs. Ralph McClarnon and Mrs. Delmar Sipe organizing. W A Chonan Eddie Carter and Donald Mann oversee the cats.
Carthage agriculture class members and leader Harry Ammen thank area stockraisers for cooperative support. Farmers visited farms of Roscoe Clark J Brookshire John White Geo Apple Ralph Pearson John Blessinger Vern Plummer Russell Reddick Donald Stoten and Paul Souder. County and district judging meets were held April 5 and 6 and the effort helped Carthage make a strong showing.
Ripley township exceeded its March war bond quota by reaching 9,798.75 dollars against a 5,680.70 target. Rushville was the only other township to oversubscribe while the county total fell short of 73,000 dollars with 50,479.25 in sales.
Sgt and Mrs Max Nowotne welcomed a 5 pound 14 ounce son named Max Wallace born Tuesday at Camp Atterbury hospital. Sgt Nowotne is stationed in England. A daughter was born Thursday morning at Henry County Hospital in New Castle to Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt. Both mother and child are reported doing nicely.
Grant Henley was admitted to the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis last week and underwent an operation Saturday morning. He is reported as doing as well as could be expected. Room A424.
Mrs Bayard Baker attended a Hancock county club meeting Monday at the Bradley Methodist church. She then attended the Rush County Council meeting Wednesday at Rushville library.
Mr and Mrs James Nelson attended the funeral service Thursday afternoon for Lee Hupp held in Alexandria.
Mr and Mrs Paul Benton Norris and baby arrived from Washington DC to the home of her parents in Arlington Sunday evening. Mr Norris of the FBI division has been transferred to Jackson Mississippi. Mrs Norris and baby will stay with her parents for a while. Mr Norris left Thursday for Jackson with Mrs A W Winfield who will visit Cpl and Mrs Fred I Doebber in New Orleans. They will also stop in Louisville to visit Staff Sgt and Mrs J Loyd Spencer.
George N Beamer of the Public Service Commission announced rate reductions for about 200 000 Public Service Company customers in Carthage and statewide. Total savings exceed 400 000 with lower top and bottom steps for residence rural and commercial classes and a shift to lower industrial rates protecting wartime production. The new schedules set specific kilowatt hour charges and minimums, with potential future adjustments depending on costs.
Seventeen Bush County men were drafted into the army and nineteen to the navy among 36 registrants from this area who underwent physical examinations in Indianapolis on Saturday. From Carthage four men were accepted: Thomas A. Murfin and Philip K. Montgomery to the navy. Kenneth E. Ray and Hugh M. Roberts to the army.
Mrs. Charles E. Brown of Carthage area was transported Tuesday to Henry County Hospital for treatment. Roscoe Brown is identified as her son.
The Girl Scouts led by Mrs Julia McMichael traveled to Charlottesville on Wednesday evening to attend an investiture service at the Friends church.
