A Candle-Lite Service is set for Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. at Carthage Friends Church. Rev. John Compton of Muncie, General Superintendent of Indiana Yearly Meeting, will be guest speaker. The Junior Choir will provide music.
Good Friday services held Friday at 2 00 p m at Carthage Friends Church with Rev Basil Stultz as speaker.
Spe George Roland Mrs Ro land and daughter Danette of Clarksville Tennessee spent nine days visiting Mr and Mrs Luther Hull and Mr and Mrs Russell Roland along with friends and other relatives.
Four Carthage boys accompanied to Purdue Fairgrounds Lafayette Saturday by Lewis Lafuse took part in the Shorthorn Show and Sale Judging. Placing in the upper third were Ralph Harrold Bob Baker Fred Robbins and Marlin Wilson.
Reported by staff that Reverend Krieg's father is slowly improving after brain operation. He has moved from critical care to a two bed ward with a broken right wrist allowing for gradual healing. If he continues to improve, doctors say he could return home in about two weeks.
The Camera Club met Wednesday night with president Hubert Hunt presiding. Betty Silver read the secretary’s report. Nita Mundell showed slides of Wisconsin Dells and camp life in Wisconsin. Next meeting will feature Howard Ewbank of Rushville with pictures. Refreshments were provided by Mr and Mrs Joe Cooney Knightstown and Mr and Mrs James Ellis.
Linda Ewing, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bill Ewing formerly of Carthage, won first and second at the district Speech Contest on April 11 with an original ovation. She placed second at the finals and will compete at the zone contest April 27 at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. Miss Ewing is a junior at Knightstown High School.
Mrs. Donald Staten Jr correspondent secretary of Rushville Tri Kappa with Mrs. Richard Anderson president and Mrs. William Kimmel of near Raleigh attended the Kappa Kappa State Convention at French Lick Hotel Friday and Saturday. Staten led decorations for a breakfast for contributing correspondents. ninety secretaries attended of 118. The convention meets biennially.
Mrs. James Terhunen remains about the same at home. Paul Scott is slowly improving at Rush Memorial Hospital and can walk a little. Sheryl Mosier, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier, returned from Rush Memorial Hospital after a week of rest. Warren Power remains about the same at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. C G Hill remains about the same at her Carthage home.
Mrs Dona Gulley and Mrs Min Wells traveled by bus to Newport Rhode Island on April 2 to visit Mrs Gulley’s son John Jackson who serves in the Navy there. They spent Friday visiting aboard his ship and returned to Carthage on Monday after an enjoyable week.
The Carthage Post Office will open this Saturday as usual, with rural service resuming at the same time. The notice confirms standard weekend operations for locals relying on mail and rural delivery.
Miss Sharon Sipes daughter of Mr and Mrs Delmer Sipes won the Hello Charley Queen honor at Western Electric Indianapolis after a 30 judge final. She will serve as hostess at company events for a year and appear on ads and vacation stickers. Coronation Dance is May 25 at the Indiana Roof.
The Cool Rods held a Thursday meeting at Bill Akers to plan a April 14 road test and a May rodeo. Members pledged to expand the club. A Sunday road test from Carthage to Knightstown Dunreath Rushville Arlington and back was won by Dick Moore in 52 minutes 5 seconds. Clair Wrightsman earned 50 points for judging. standings shifted with the results. Barbara Watts named managing editor of the Indiana Daily Student for eight weeks.
Rush County Extension Office reports a $300 scholarship for an outstanding 4 H club girl with Angus cattle projects graduating high school in 1957. The applicant must be recommended by the county agriculture agent and submit an application scrapbook and a recommendation letter by May 20 1957. Cpl Lloyd D McCleese of Knightstown Indiana, son of Mr and Mrs Herman McCleese, plays baseball in Augsburg Germany for the Headquarters and Logistics Company team of the Fifth Airborne Division's Command and Control Battalion. He joined the Army in June 1954 and trained at Fort Chaffee Arkansas after graduating Knights Town High School in 1954.
Tweedy's Buy Maple Lumber Co of Carthage has purchased Maple Lumber Co Inc of Knightstown and will assume operation after an inventory this week. Tom Maple, who built houses in Cottonwood Heights, plans to devote time to new construction. Ross Tweedy and son Jack will run the business as usual at the same location and expand stock. The shop is due to reopen Monday April 22.
Pfc. Herbert Windsor, 45, of Castle Air Force Base in California, died March 20. Funeral services were held April 12 at Lindal Ohio Baptist Church after delays due to affairs in Paris. Survivors include wife Simone and son Jerry in Paris, France, brothers Howard of Carthage and Arthur of Cincinnati. Attendees included Howard Windsor and Bill Windsor.
Peterborough New Hampshire breeder Omer T Wicker of Carthage Indiana sold the registered Guernsey bull Golden Don to Alex Mc Donnell III of Middletown Indiana. Dam is Golden Jane Sue and sire Golden Royal King.
Jackson Blue River School District dismissed one condemnation suit for land to add to Charlottesville school after the Stanleys sold over two acres. A second suit against Margaret M Smith of Richmond seeks eight acres adjacent to the current Charlottesville property to meet state building rules.
Parvell Moore was admitted Sunday to Methodist Hospital and underwent major surgery Wednesday morning. He is listed in room A 435 with stable post operative condition.

Jesse Henley 91 of Carthage and former Rush County auditor died at 5 p m Sunday at his daughter Eleanor Robins on Richmond home while staying there Born March 16 1866 he was a lifelong Carthage resident a retired farmer and longtime public servant including Ripley Township trustee Carthage School Board member and Rush County auditor He was a charter member of Carthage Friends Church Survived by three daughters two sons in law five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Services were held at 2 30 p m Wednesday at Carthage Friends Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery Carthage His wife Jennie Henley died last year.

Mrs Hazel Alexander 68 of Arlington died suddenly at 9 15 a m Saturday after a heart attack at her home where she lived alone She was a lifelong Arlington resident widow of George W Alexander married December 27 1912 Surviving are two sons Thomas T Alexander Norman W Alexander a daughter Mrs Glenn Schroeder a brother Owen Long a sister Mrs Russell Northam and five grandchildren Funeral services were held at 2 p m Monday at Master and Sons Mortuary Rushville with burial in Arlington East Hill Cemetery
At Greenfield public auction last Monday morning, two tax delinquent properties were sold. Lot 20 in Teal's Addition, owned by Robert A. Jones, sold for 175 dollars to Harris Avery, with 144.70 in back taxes. Lot 41 in Burdett's Addition, held by Lizzie E. Keeley, sold for 585 dollars to Samuel Onstott and Loris Wright, with 22.33 in back taxes owed. Owners have two years to pay.
Harry Grant Henley 71 retired rural mail carrier and Carthage Town Council chairman died last Saturday at Rush Memorial Hospital Rushville after a year of declining health He lived in Carthage since birth September 30 1885 and retired in 1945 He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruby Stevens Henley Survivors include widow Edna Riggs Henley two daughters Ruth and Florence plus a brother and a step daughter Funeral services were held Monday at 2 00 pm at Thompson Hampton Funeral Home with Rev Robert Shockney and Rev C L Davis officiating Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery.
Rev Basil G Stultz urged the East Street Christian Church to hire a full time minister stating since 1944 he has served part time. He noted enrollment gains with 58 adults and 71 youths joining and said the congregation should support full time pastoral leadership, with his resignation to follow after a new minister is called.
A cooking demonstration and entertainment program occurs Tuesday April 23 at the local Community Center. Sponsored by Carthage Radio & Appliance Shop the event features Miss Jane Bigger from New Castle and the group Two Huts and a Miss. Profits go to the Junior Class for their Washington trip.
Richard D O Kelley of Charlottesville has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa the national scholastic honor at Indiana University He is a senior in government and in the top 10 per cent of his class He also belongs to Pi Sigma Alpha and Scabbard and Blade.
Mrs Allie Burton fell Saturday evening and broke her arm at the wrist while staying with her daughter Mrs Jess Fry. Burton and her sister Mrs Fannie Clevidence are related.
