Mr. and Mrs. George Rhodes announce the birth of their son James A weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces born Friday April 5 at Rush Memorial Hospital. He is grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Pitts.
Mrs. Rachel King attended a pitch-in dinner and organization meeting at Mrs. Emma Whissler home. Thirteen past matrons of the year 1953 54 of the Order of Eastern Star 12th district organized at this gathering. A social time followed.
Mrs Etna Mathley reported the sudden death of her brother Oscar Adkins age 72 of Versailles Kentucky from a heart attack. Adkins was a retired bank cashier.
Mrs. Bertha Beck president and Mrs. Norma McKain secretary attended the Richmond YMCA district meeting. Beck presided over an all day session held Tuesday with McKain assisting in the event.
Mrs Russell Shutt and Mrs Forrest Moore of the Ripley Home Ec Club and Mrs Richard Har old and Mrs Robert Nigh of the Mixers Club attended a Leaders' Training School at the Rushville Court House Assembly room on Monday.
Rev Forest Crider of Greenfield will speak with Kings Messengers from Shelbyville providing the singing. Everyone is invited to attend each night at 7 30 p m. Rev Ora Hisle, Pastor.
Carthage Chapter No. 574 O E S held a regular meeting April 10 with Edna Kennedy and Roy Stanley presiding. Ann Parish was installed as Marshal. A notable Observation Night featured an Easter cross of white lilies and readings by officers plus two solos by Arminta Ruby, followed by seasonal refreshments.
In a letter from Indiana University School of Music, Carthage Music teacher John Medjeski is commended for imparting sound musical knowledge to students and for patience and understanding. George F. Drueger signed the note as administrative assistant to the Dean.
Sheryl Mosier daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier is ill at home and has been out of school two weeks. Warren Power is slowly improving at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mr and Mrs Grant Henley are very poorly at their home in Carthage. Jesse Henley is seriously ill at the home of his daughter Mrs Francis Robinson in Richmond.
Mrs. Lillie Skinner formerly Lewis Hunter of Carthage remarried Saturday to Rex Skinner of Indianapolis. Rev. C R Davis of Carthage Fletcher Methodist Church officiated at 6 30 p m. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Arthur Gorman of Middletown. They will reside in Knightstown.
Rev. Jack Buskey conducting revival services at Fletcher Methodist Church had an emergency appendectomy at 4 am Tuesday at Hancock County Hospital. He and Mrs. Buskey of Wilmore Kentucky are staying with Rev. O. L. Davis and family this week.
Centerville hosted the State Band and Chorus Auditions with eighteen bands and twelve choruses. Carthage and several schools earned first division ratings with medals and plaques, led by director John Medjeski's choir program.
Mr and Mrs A B Thompson relocate to Rushville in a home on North Perkins Street. Mr and Mrs Frank Hampton and family of Bedford move into the Thompson residence and funeral home on North Maine Street.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority will meet Tuesday night at the home of Babs Osborn with Norma McKain assisting.
Four Wars From The Office School reports busy Open House preparations with posters, typing and filing practice, and craft displays. Seniors face graduation costs amid dates including Prom April 26 and Commencement May 16 while Juniors stage a successful play earning over 390 dollars for Washington and New York trips.
Carthage School adopts Chron icle Guidance Publications a service reporting job openings and required subjects. Principal Mr Morris says the material helps graduates plan education or immediate work and is available at the high school office.
Postmaster Joseph E Porter announces Carthage Post Office will close to the public on Saturdays and rural delivery will pause on Saturdays. Effective April 15 1957 the orders come from Postmaster General dated April 5 1957. Funds are insufficient to sustain normal operation and the orders remain in effect until June 30 1957.
Entertains Dr and Mrs George B McNabb hosted Monday and Tuesday gatherings for Dr McNabb’s brothers and wives including Judge and Mrs C R McNabb of Ft Wayne and Mr and Mrs D W McNabb of Bedford. D W McNabb stayed overnight with Dr and Mrs Richard McNabb and sons. They were in North Vernon Sunday to pay respects to Dr McNabb's cousin Clyde Thompson.
Redbud trees are expected to bloom in southern Indiana in the coming days, with flowering varying by daily temperatures. Blossoms last about 60 days, with peak displays from Cincinnati to Louisville along the Ohio River and notable scenes at Clifty Falls State Park and near the Franklin Union County line. The trees prefer limestone soils, have heart shaped leaves, and produce small pods. bees gather nectar and honey from the flowers. The largest known Indiana redbud is the Fairfield Redbud on Indiana 101, protected by the State Highway Department.

Palm Sunday at Wesleyan Methodist with Rev Shockney at 7 30 p m Monday at Christian Church with Rev Davis Tuesday at Walnut Ridge Friends with Rev Krieg Wednesday at Fletcher Methodist with Rev Barrett Thursday all churches hold services at their own church Good Friday services at 2 00 p m at Carthage Friends Church with Rev Stulta speaking.
Governor Harold W Handley proclaims April 12 as Arbor Day to honor and plant trees. He highlights Indiana’s forest economic benefits and urges schools to participate with tree planting on state grounds. A 10 00 a m ceremony on the state house lawn will plant a Silver Maple with speeches and music. Public invited.
The Carthage P T A held its monthly meeting in the school gym with an open house for rooms and student work. Delegates voted to sponsor a used book store at the next school year’s start and elected new officers: President Harry Cooper Vice president Albert Terhune Secretary Josephine Alexander Treasurer Phyllis Lafuse.
The Carthage Lions Club met for a dinner meeting at the Lions Den in the Community Center. Officers for next year were elected: James Ellis president, William H. Skinner secretary, Harold Dixon treasurer, Jack Tweedy first vice president, Lewis Lafuse second vice president, Joseph E. Porter third vice president, Guy Ewing Lion Tamer, Albert Ray tail twister, A. J. Carr and Ora Clayton two year directors, Rev. Robert Shockney Lion Chaplain. Installation will occur at the June meeting with July 1, 1957 official start. Clarence Northam of Arlington discussed Alaska trip photos with Lee Silver.
Pvt Russell Shutt of Fort Bragg NC has received a promotion to the rank of corporal. This marks a step up in his military career as he continues service with the army.
Indiana University named Frank Clark an outstanding First-Year Latin contestant after regional scores dated March 23. He earned a high score and earned invitation to the state finals at Bloomington on April 27, joining Greenfield’s Judy Worland who also seeks the title. Frank will travel with Mrs. Lord.
Mrs Mildred Sparks 51 wife of James Sparks of R R 1 died Tuesday night at her home northwest of Carthage after a brief illness. Services Friday at 2 pm at Butcher Funeral Home Knightstown. Burial Dale Cemetery Connersville. Survived by husband five children two sons Donald and Thomas two daughters Helen Quinn Lapel Lois Preston Montrose Mich and June Sparks at home one sister Ruby Morris Connersville and her mother Sarah Oldham Connersville. Member of Baptist church.

The Band Booster organization held a meeting in the School Music room last Thursday at 7 30 p m electing president Nola Patterson vice president Frances Terhune and secretary treasurer Jean Windsor Seer Mr and Mrs William Alexander attended a pitch in dinner at Mays High School Gym Monday evening at 6 30 honoring the senior mothers basketball program Jack Tweedy was a business visitor three days last week in Peoria Illinois
The Rush County 4 H and FFA Dairy Judging Contest held April 8 at Melvin Cole Farm and ISSC Home Knightstown drew 97 boys from seven schools. Milroy led by Clyde Bond won with 751 points, followed by Mays 749, Manilla 742, Arlington 723, Carthage fifth with 661, New Salem 660, Rushville 631. First individual was Laurence Parks 256 points, with John Gasser, Jerry Pounds, Larry Lee, and DesJean Simmerman among top scorers. judges included Bearl Addison Hayden King J R Brown. A trophy for the winning team will be awarded later.
