Mrs William Alsmen dies at 56 near Arlington
Mrs William Alsmen, 56, died Wednesday afternoon at 4 45 at her home near Arlington after a long illness. Survived by husband and five children John Arnold Charles Marie and Myrtle one brother Morton Spencer and one sister Mrs Alice Miller all near Arlington. Funeral services Friday at two in the Methodist Church at Arlington followed by burial in East Hill cemetery.

Carthage Girl Wins Second Honor in District Oratorical Contest
Paul Blackburn of Shelbyville won the district oratorical contest held Monday in Richmond receiving 100 dollars. Grace Overman of Carthage Rush County took second with 50 dollars. Eight counties participated. Overman placed fifth in speaking. Judges were A C Risinger Eaton Ohio A O Bales Winchester and R D Wheat Portland.

Hack Driver William Davy and Son Lawrence Tied to Mail Route
Hack driver William Davy and his son Lawrence, from near Wilkinson, visited on Sunday. William Davy previously lived in this place and Knightstown and operated a mail hack between them before the Big Four railroad reached the area in 1891. Earlier mail was sent from Rushville with a stop at Hannegan, then a post office.

Army Trains Pigeons for Hazardous Flights
The signal corps trains pigeons to relay artillery directions when other communications fail. About 1500 birds are kept at posts including Camp Vail New Jersey and in Panama, with training times from ten days to two weeks. Hawks in the Canal Zone threaten flights.

Fire destroys country home near Arlington
A fire about 9 o'clock Wednesday night consumed the farm home of Clarence Hargrove two miles northwest of Arlington. The house was owned by Harry McFatridge and no one was home. Hargrove lost all household goods and had no insurance.
