Allen, head of the War Savings Organization, asks readers if they know a fallow youth earning 25 dollars weekly, a wage earner risking his job by speaking out, a housewife ashamed to show a market bill, a factory girl buying a $350 fur, a shopper who says wrap it up, or investors trading Liberty Bonds for stock promises. He cites fears of high living costs and thrift neglect as key issues. The questions illustrate social tensions amid war-time saving efforts and rising costs.
