Suicide Sacrificial Hero Edward Cooper Dies in Cleveland

Charles Edward Cooper of the National Army stationed at Neola Park Cleveland Ohio died Sunday morning about eleven from Spanish influenza. His father John W Cooper of Carlisle received first word around ten and rushed to Cleveland. a second telegram announced the death ten minutes later. Friends carried John W Cooper home in shock. Edward's five brothers Walter and Charles of Merom were notified and traveled to Cleveland to bring the body back to Carlisle, arriving Tuesday morning. Edward had been ill for about two weeks and bedfast for nearly four. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 pm at the Cooper home led by Rev A L Williams assisted by Sullivan Elks Lodge Resolutions. War Mothers and Carlisle Lodge No 3 I A M had roles. active pallbearers were Ed Curtner Steven Sproatt Eugene Duffer Albert Wiggs John Frazee Halstead Rogers. honorary pallbearers were Miss Louise Riggs and friends from Sullivan. Carlisle also welcomed District Deputy Grand Master David N Curry of the Subordinate Lodge of Odd Fellows.

Paul D. Watson of Carlisle was elected District Deputy Chief Patriarch of the Grand Encampment I O O F and received his commission on Saturday. He has been an active worker in both the Subordinate and Encampment branches, and this office recognizes his service to the Order.

Sullivan County Growers Win at International Fat Stock Show

Frank B. Ridgway and Thomas Hudson of Carlisle Indiana won first and second prizes for two carloads of yearling wethers at the International Live Stock Exhibit in Chicago. The Ridgway Hudson entry sold at auction for 14 cents a pound, marking Sullivan County’s first livestock award at the show.

Plainville man Garrett Sheets receives discharge at Camp Sherman

Garrett Sheets of Plainville formerly worked as an operator for the C. and BE railroad at Sullivan before enlistment. He returned this week to town after receiving his discharge at Camp Sherman.
