W. B. Akin and his son Curtner of Pittsburg Pennsylvania returned home Monday after being called here last week due to the death of W. J. Curtner.
Mrs. Sarah Branson spent Monday in Sullivan with her granddaughter Mrs. Foster Crook, sharing time and family activities.
The Spanish flu remains steady in Carlisle with one new case at the James Allen home this week. Paxton reports two deaths as the epidemic lingers, while Pleasantville sees worsening conditions and officials warn Carlisle may face tighter bans on public gatherings.
The Peoples State Bank of this city adopts a modern bookkeeping system with a Burroughs ledger posting machine. The change, effective December 1, speeds work, reduces errors, and improves service to customers.
Martin Sorensen files suit in Knox circuit court against the Gibson Company and the Gibson Overland Company through attorneys J P L Weems and Kimmell Shake. He seeks judgment of 300 dollars alleging the second hand automobile sold did not prove as represented.
Elmer G. Hoover son of Mrs Ann Hoover of this city and Miss Olgt Serlie of Norden Minnesota were married in Norden on Thanksgiving Day last. Hoover owns a 560 acre Norden farm and was a major stockholder in Hoover Liniment Company until recently. They will reside in Norden with Mrs Hoover daughter of Postmaster T M Sorlie.
Miss Eva Shake and William George were married at the bride’s parents home two miles north of Carlisle on November 28. Rev. A L Williams officiated. The couple will live in the Hutchison property on Saline street. Mrs Shake is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J H Shake. George is a shot firer at the Chicago Carlisle Coal Company mine.
At Rivett hall on Tuesday the Carlisle Co operative Telephone Company elected Salathiel Boone L J Kixmiller and E H Duffer as directors for the coming year. The majority favor 100 percent service over dividends and plan to reinvest 1919 earnings to improve the system for better service. Over five hundred subscribers support the move.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed W. Akin and granddaughter Miss Bereniece McConnell departed Monday for California to spend the winter seeking better health for Mr. Akin. They were escorted to Chicago by Edgar W. Akin Jr. of Davenport, Iowa, who had been visiting.
A Carlisle chautauqua for next August is assured after a contract with the Lincoln Chautauqua System. The six day program is set for August and signed by about sixty Carlisle residents.
Carlized name change completed by Franklin Circuit Court Benton Illinois. Rev Carlyle, born Dane, now legally Martin S Carlyle, pastor of Carlisle Christian church.
Mrs J Fairhurst and her daughter Pauline were in Terre Haute Saturday for unspecified activities.
Halstead P. Rogers of this city and Hayden Morgan of Paxton arrived home Sunday morning from Camp Grant near Rockford Illinois with honorable discharges. The News will feature weekly reports on Carlisle area soldiers returning from Uncle Sam's big army until the last of the local volunteers arrive home.
Mrs. Clarence O Haver and her son Tommie of North Vernon visited Wednesday night last week with the former's parents Mr and Mrs T S Risinger.
