Forest Users Should Check Local Conditions

Drought may dry up water supplies at National Forest campgrounds and picnic sites in the Intermountain Region this summer. Check with local Forest Service offices before going outdoors. Carry drinking water. water sources may vanish overnight. Bring firefighting tools in vehicles and use only designated fire circles, fireplaces, or stoves.

Hunt Deadline Nears for Controlled Hunts

About two weeks remain before the deadline for controlled hunt applications to the Department of Fish and Game. By June 15 more than 7,000 applications had been received and the midnight July 1 cutoff is approaching. There is no application fee this year but permit fees apply to successful draws.

Updated Highway Projects Reported by Senator Budge

Senator Budge announced time schedules for state highway work in the area. Projects include Land to Alexander upgrade bid this fall with completion in fall 1978 at 2.5 million dollars, Main Street Soda Springs light upgrade summer 1978 at about 30 thousand. US-30 Alexander Junction to Soda Springs resurfacing 320 thousand finished by fall 1978. Soda Springs Railroad Overpass bid this fall for 1.45 million. Highway 34 Grace to Alexander reconstruction bid this summer with 1.75 million and finish fall 1978. New Highway 34 from Wayan east bid this winter with completion hoped next fall.

Dravo Holds Annual Safety Awards Banquet

Dravo Soda Springs employees and supervisors held their annual Safety Awards Banquet on Saturday night June 18 at the Cedar Cellar. A family style dinner preceded awards for one to seven year time-loss free service, with centerpieces drawn for employees’ wives and dancing afterward.

Grace County Fair Parade Seeks Local Floats

Roger M. Facer of Grace named County Fair parade chairman urges businesses in Grace Soda Springs and nearby towns to enter floats for August 5 and 6. Entrants must submit float theme and a three by five card description to the First National Bank at Grace two days before the parade. Soda Springs mill override passes with 512 to 160 vote

Last Wednesday election results show 512 in favor and 160 against the 10 mill override levy aimed to retire about $419,000 debt for Soda Springs School District. In Soda Springs the vote was 468 to 133 and in Wayan 44 to 27 in favor.

Grace Library Board Elects Mrs DeVat Gillette

Mrs DeVat Gillette won a five year term on the Grace Library Board over incumbent Gail Ray in a recent Grace election. Election officials were Mrs John McCammon Mrs Virgil Benson and Mr Evan Weaver. Returns showed Gillette 32 votes Ray 27.

City Officials Attend Annual Conference Held in Boise

The Association of Idaho Cities held its annual conference in Boise from June 14 to June 17 at the Rodeway Inn. The program included a president's reception, workshops for officials and spouses, tours of the penitentiary and capitol, seminars on the media and drugs, governor’s mansion visits, and a banquet with a 1977 78 president inauguration. Attendees included Mayors Milton Gambles and Doug Campbell from Soda Springs and Grace respectively, among others.

Caribou and Bear Lake Added To RC&D Area

Senator Frank Church announced Secretary of Agriculture agreed to add Bear Lake and Caribou Counties to the Bear River Resource Conservation and Development Area in northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho. The expansion aims to control erosion conserve water and support flood control and habitat planning benefiting Bear Lake Caribou and nearby regions.

Forest Service YCC Program Starts for Local Participants

Caribou County reports 16 high school students selected from 35 applicants for the Forest Service Youth Conservation Corps program this summer. Participants will work five days weekly on trails and fences at Diamond Creek and youth camp sites with environmental education two hours daily. Crew leaders include Chuck Chambers and Jay Hamblin with Orval Bella and Ken Burnham assisting.
