Caribou County Commissioner Rufus Smith Dies in Rollover

Rufus R. Smith 66 Caribou County Commissioner from Grace died after a pickup rollover south of Grace on Hiway 34. Born May 29 1911 Turner Idaho he served as commissioner since 1972 and held roles with Potato Growers of Idaho Last Chance Canal Co and Caribou County Hospital Board. He was married to Dora Allsop and survived by wife two daughters five grandchildren one great grandchild his mother two brothers and six sisters. Funeral Thursday at 1 p.m. at Grace LDS Stake Center burial in Grace Cemetery with visitation at Allen Funeral Home Wednesday evening and prior to service.

IPUC Denies UP&L Interim Rate Increase Petition

The Idaho Public Utilities Commission rejected Utah Power and Light Companys request for a 9.4 million interim rate hike saying the utility failed to prove emergency need. The ruling notes 1976 was a record earnings year and that no obligation exists to guarantee ongoing rate of return.

Cities focus on taxes and zoning at convention

At the Assn. of Yaho Cities Annual Convention officials debated local option taxing authority and sales or hotel motel taxes as relief for property taxes. They discussed state revenue sharing, liability insurance for officials, and the need for early planning for growth led by Soda Springs representatives including Mayor Milton B. Gambes.

Bear River Muzzleloaders Rendezvous Announces July Event

The Sheeprock Muzzleloaders Club hosts the 2nd Annual Bear River Rendezvous July 2 3 and 4 three miles south of Soda Springs across Bear River bridge. Activities include black powder shop knife and tomahawk throwing and kid friendly tomahawks. Civil War artillery replicas demonstrations, tipi camping, games races and prize drawings for a .45 caliber Kentucky rifle on the Fourth.

Cross Roads to play Open Air Dance in City Park

Cross Roads a Salt Lake City eight piece group with a large horn section and Chicago style music performs at the Open Air Dance in City Park Saturday July 2 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Idaho seal coating planned for 25.5 miles in three counties

Idaho Division of Highways will seal coat 25.5 miles of state highways in Oneida Caribou and Bear Lake Counties in southeast Idaho. Two segments total about 25.5 miles include Deep Creek to Colton Road and Soda Springs to Noonan Road. Circle A Construction Inc. of Twin Falls was the apparent low bidder at 221191 17. Work to begin within 30 days after contract award.

Old West Days Returns With Dinkey Engine Theme

Soda Springs Chamber of Commerce announces Old West Days events July 1 to July 4. Activities include sidewalk sales, bike races, Dinkey Engine dedication, open air dance, parade, tug of war, Boy Scout competitions, greased pig chase, and a ranch style barbecue in City Park. Commerce announces the first annual industrial tug of war to be held Monday after the parade in the city park. The event promotes community participation and celebration of Independence Day with teams competing for bragging rights and prizes.
