Southeast Idaho anglers hit opening day with variable success. Caribou County reported 23 fish per angler, down from last year as Woot Reservoir saw fewer catches. Blackfoot Reservoir counted around 350 boats, below last year’s 480, while overall statewide effort lagged amid poor conditions.

Lieutenant Ralph Gorton Killed in Vietnam
Marine Second Lieutenant Ralph Gorton of Boise aged 24 was killed near Quang Tri while leading his platoon in action. He had been in Vietnam since December and in combat since February 1. He was due for rest this month and is survived by his son Ralph IV, daughter Patti Anne, and grandmother Mrs. Rita Gorton of Soda Springs.

Mrs Gunnell Retires After 25 Years At North Gem High
Mrs Eunice Gunnell retired May 25 after teaching speech and drama and serving as librarian at North Gem High School for 19 years. She directed 115 plays, reactivated the Thespian Troupe, advised Pep Club and cheerleaders, taught US Government and social science, and advised the senior class. She drove 156,000 miles or more for the job, began at North Gem in 1948, and earlier taught at Soda Springs High School, Pocatello, and Randolph Utah before joining North Gem. She was born in Salt Lake City in 1908 and holds a BA from the University of Utah plus a librarian certificate.

On her last day of school May 25 the faculty hosted a party and gifted a planter with an African violet. She has a son Mack a Western Airlines pilot and four grandchildren. Conservation Officers Check Coho Growth in Local Reservoir
Conservation officers report three Coho salmon gill netted in Blackfoot reservoir. An earlier experiment planted 250000 Coho last year and 162000 this year. Coho, or silver salmon, feed on young of other species and help reduce trash fish. They’ve also been planted in Palisades and Island Park and are treated like trout for bag limits.
