Idaho Stake primary teachers collect "birthday pennies" for the LDS Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Donors are asked to give 4 pennies per birthday. Those not contacted may see stake primary officers or teachers to contribute.
Five Soda Springs high school girls VaNeal Ellis Margaret Carese Janet Peck Geraldine Hansen and Shirley Soderman are candidates for queen of the Sweatheart Ball on February 19. Candidates must have at least an average and not have reigned at a previous high school dance. Eight student judges and student body officers will select the queen after a talent contest. The ball, sponsored by the yearbook staff, features Montpelier orchestra and starts at 9 p.m. with a hoped for large crowd.
The city council completed the purchase of an International half ton pickup and a revolving ladder for the maintenance truck. Caribou Implement offered the low price of 1425 dollars. Max Snell, power and water superintendent, spent part of the week in Salt Lake City buying the ladder. The equipment will aid crews working on the overhead lighting system.
Mayor A L Oxburn is scheduled to return to Soda Springs before part of next week after spending several weeks in Fresho, California at the home of his daughter and son in law Mir and Mrs Kay Gorton.
Soda Springs Cardinals enter the last week of regular play with an outside chance of a 60 50 league record. They stand 7 5 with two tough league opponents remaining North Marsh and Grace as tournament action unfolds next week in Montpelier.
The mayor and his wife, son of Bancroft, planned a Thursday morning car trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras events from February 18 through 22. County Attorney Francis Rasmussen spent two days in Boise last week attending the Idaho Prosecuting Attorneys annual convention.
Weather station reports a tumultuous week in Caribou with a chinook, blizzard and freezing temperatures. Winds melted snow then plunged, causing county road closures in Gem Valley and school cancellations in Bancroft. Temperatures ranged from 25 below to 84 above with 0.12 inches of precipitation.
Soda Springs freshman David Hayes son of Mr and Mrs Tom Hayes earned the Eagle Scout rank at a Sunday court of honor. Asa F Hateh Idaho district advancement chairman presented the award as others spoke on his progress leadership and character. Troop 20 led by John Tolley opened with flag ceremony and the event featured multiple troop representatives and prayers.
Caribou cutters travel to West Yellowstone this weekend and next for matchups with Utah in Grace. In Preston, Idaho, the Idaho vs Utah event finished 5–5 with notable results: Ralph Taylor beat Hy McLain, Vester Olsen No. 1 beat Joe Fredrico, Ned Spackman beat Rae Sorensen, Ted Beus beat Seth Gregory, Milt Bowman beat Benson Hurren, Glen Henrie beat Bud Bassett, Bryce Turner beat Harold Hadley, Vester Olsen No. 1 beat Jim Murray, Doc Gregory beat Earl Jorgensen, and Hine Schyvanaveldt beat Bud Bassett.
A meeting at Bal Lloyd’s home in Caribou gathered county commissioners ranchers and SCS figures to discuss soil conservation. New board members Ira Ellis and Emil Stoor joined Sam Reed Meber Lau Norman Berg Vern Hacking spoke on background duties and local program aims.
The Caribou Wildlife Protective Association announces its annual banquet set for Friday March 4. President Doyle Stiles leads a revised committee with Clarke Brown as chairman and members West Evans Walt Gagan Jra Elay Myron Isle and Walt Black. The speaker and banquet emails will be announced later.
The Caribou County sheriff reports fewer traffic accidents in winter months due to careful driving and fewer tourists. In 1954 there were 124 accidents with 51 from November to April and 77 from May to October. three fatalities occurred in July and August.
Dr Rowland dean of Idaho State College College of Pharmacy spoke on antibiotics history development manufacture uses and limits at the Soda Springs Kiwanis weekly gathering. Two new members Milt Smith and John Reeves were introduced by President Don Beck.
The Caribou March of Olmes auction at Grace was postponed by blizzard and rescheduled for Saturday February 26. Chairman Francis Peterson announced the event begins at 10 a.m. with Charles McCracken as auctioneer. Free coffee, pop and donuts will be served. A host of items were donated for the auction.
Caribou chapter of the American Cancer Society met in Soda Springs to outline a day-long training school on March 31 at the Idaho cafe with local doctors and panel discussions. An April fund drive was planned and church observances were to be held April 17. Attendees included county chair Betty Largillere and several Soda Springs and Conda volunteers.
The Eastern Idaho Production Credit association will hold its annual meeting in Soda Springs on March 10. Secretary-treasurer Clarence Hart and assistant secretary-treasurer P. Tucker met with a planning committee from Soda Springs and Grace to arrange details.
Rep. Ralph Harrison introduces a bill allowing farmers to move farm machinery on highways without a permit in daylight except weekends and holidays. Vehicles may travel up to 35 miles per hour and must display red flags on front and back.
Dr and Mrs Mack Tigert and their children are visiting in Enter prise Oregon at the home of his sister Mrs Don Robertson and they plan to return Sunday.
David K. McLean, 81, longtime Soda Springs probate judge and Caribou county founder, died at his home. Born July 7, 1874 in Meadowville, he served as county attorney, helped organize Caribou county in 1910, and was probate judge from 1933 until ill health forced retirement in 1953. Funeral Monday at 1 pm in the Soda Springs LDS chapel.
Death notice reports Melvin N. Garner died in the Challis hospital after a morning illness. He was a resident of the Beus home and never married. The body was sent to Sods Sbrings for burial, with arrangements to be announced.
Kiwanians and Lions host a joint gathering next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Idaho cafe for a feature documentary on the Masai tribe of Africa. After dinner they proceed to the courthouse to view the film.
The couple Rev. and Mrs. Scott Bowman were called to San Francisco California and traveled to the coast this week.
