Community notes reveal a chaotic scene with stolen cars and a hayride event at Soda Springs. Residents discuss safety and a designer’s involvement while local efforts to fix gear and organize events continue amid confusion and opinions.
An accident occurred in a garage involving a delivery truck driven by John Rigby of Soda Springs. The vehicle turned into an alley at Conda and trapped a coal heater, causing damage valued at 60 dollars and injuring occupants.
Caribou County members attended a cancer education session in Pocatello. Dr. Allen Tigert Saddles Breast Cancer talk and Len Cooley’s recovery highlighted the event. Awards honored Esther Ziegler and other volunteers as plans for an April fund drive progressed.
North Gem High reports six weeks of scholastic achievement with two groups listed. Scoutmaster John Tolley announced Boy Scouts Troop 20 will hold a cooked food sale at Ken's Electric starting Friday at 10 a.m. and continue until all food is sold.

Eight Soda Springs juniors and seniors placed on the A honor roll for the past six weeks or semester. Recipients include Ila Rae Stoor Karen Torgesen Lillie Marie Burtoh Mol Heann Martineau Janette Peck Lawrence Howard Sydney Finlayson Edith Ann Burton and others on the B honor roll for both periods. In all 232 students are enrolled in the junior and center high school.
The Caribou March of Dimes drive culminates with a charity auction at Grace Community Hall in Bancroft. Charles McGracken of Boise serves as auctioneer as items including a pearl necklace and Idaho potatoes go to the highest bidders. Proceeds, along with cafe coffers, support polio relief while local volunteers sell repair cards offering free service and snow tire help to fund the cause. Community members urged to contribute and share the message of support for families aided by the foundation.
Wontopherson, manager of the Soda Springs Office of Mountain States Telephone, described the company’s part in carrying TV programs over wires before the Kiwanis club. He noted two systems coaxial cable using wires and a microwave system that beams programs from tower to tower.
Weather summary notes a high of 38 degrees on Monday and a low of 18 degrees on Saturday at the Bybee weather station. Precipitation measured at the station this week totaled 0.8 inches.
Three parcels totaling about 1620 acres in Caribou County are advertised for lease by the Bureau of Land Management. Parcel one covers 240 acres north of Conda owned by Richard Torgesen Keetch and Stucki. parcel two contains 600 acres near the northeast fleet with owners Loren Neff George Butterfield Roland Allen and the U S Forest Service. parcel three is about 780 acres adjacent to parcel one owned by J H Stocking and the Forest Service. Government retains title to phosphate while owners hold surface rights. The sale will be held at the BML Boise office on March 4.
Preliminary plans for the March Red Cross drive were discussed at an officers meeting. County chairman Mraz Louiss said chairmen for various areas are being sought to organize the drive which is launched March 1. Welcome volunteers and chapter activity were noted.
North Gem and Soda Springs battled to a fair score until the second half when the Cowboys surged to a 1 point lead. Dell Maughan led North Gem with 17 points and Brent Maughan topped the Cardinals. Coach Ed Wessell warned a strong Soda Springs showing.
Snow survey shows Caribou County total snowfall 11 year low at 65 inches of water for the season. China Hat reports 13.2 inches snow and 26 inches water with eleven year average 21.1 inches snow and 3.4 inches water. Somsen Ranch records 23.2 inches snow and 4.8 inches water, with last year at this time 31.9 inches snow and 6.8 inches water. Readings collected Friday and Monday by Bill Ross Bruce Reese and Wallace Peterson from Soil Conservation and U S Forest Service and Caribou County agent.
William Meccis Caribou county deputy sheriff spoke on safe writing of checks and precautions at a Peace Officers meeting in Grace. The dinner event in Bob's dining room was led by John Van Vleet of Gracemarne. Recommendations were to be sent to the Idaho legislature via Secretary Lee Wallace. Attendees included Carl Kessler Bancroft Roe White Thorn Bartlome Mrs Donald Sorenson De Val Gillett Mal Brown Ralph Mackett Don Jones Fayette Peck Francis Rasmussen Nellie V Johnson and others.
Caribou cutters will journey to Preston Saturday to meet the Cache valley cutters. The following week they will travel to West Yellowstone at which Invited the Caribou group to compete in the cutter races. Dog team races also will be staged. The Fist Ward Green and Gold Ball will be held February 12 with details to be announced next week.
Don Stiles of Conda was reelected president of the Caribou Wildlife Protective Association at the annual officers election. Ray Homer named vice president and Larry Sherburne reelected secretary-treasurer. About 70 sportsmen attended. Prof Pierre Pulling Idaho State College spoke on canoeing techniques. Heber Smith Idaho Wildlife Federation chair discussed legislation and license hike prospects.
The Rose Prom for the Idaho Stake Explorers and MILA maids is in Bancroft recreation hall Thursday evening Feb 3. Directed by John Tolley from Soda Springs and Le Gay Peterson Bancroft stake MIA maid leader. Junior Gleaners and Junior M-Men are invited. A lace tablecloth and roses decorate the refreshment table. Mrs J P Blair of Idaho Falls is visiting with Mrs Edgar W Largilliere.
Mrs. Art Kelly recalls a week in Mexico with Mr. Kelly and the Morris couple traveling by car via Nagles on a new highway to Mexico City opened Jan 8. They witnessed a bull fight, noted Sanitation issues, poverty and Catholic churches, and described food limits, street milk, and local labor.
