Carey Band at Wy County Fair Night Parade and Races

Friday morning at the Wyandot county fair features the Horse Breeders Association colt judging. Afternoon races include a 2:16 trot 2:17 pace and a 122 dollar trot. The big parade follows with the American Legion drum corps and floats, plus Carey and Forest high school bands and free acts. Fireworks for children, aerial displays with national flags and novelty effects cap the program.

W J Ogg announces opening of the Hillstop skeet field at River Cave five miles west of Carey Sunday at noon Shells and refreshments will be sold The field will be open Thursdays and Sundays for shooting Eight positions on the field offer varied angles Skeet shooting aids field practice used in hunting Some colleges and schools have adopted skeet shooting It is popular among women with skeet clubs forming nationwide

Reunion Notes From Boneset School Former Site

Mr and Mrs J T Stombaugh and daughter Rosely attended the Boneset school reunion west of Fostoria where 46 people were present. Stombaugh elected association president with John Hardinger vice president and Fred Redfern secretary treasurer. The 1940 reunion is set for the second Sunday in September at Fostoria park.

Carey Fire Department Responds To Two Incidents

Last Thursday about 5 PM the Carey fire department was called to the Donelson Packing Co plant on Frederick street where a smokehouse explosion caused over 1000 dollars of damage due to overheating. Late Sunday the department was dispatched to the Sherman residence on Frederick street for leaves burning with no damage reported.

Sister Ordained in Northeast Ohio Conference

Mrs J J McCabe and family members spent Sunday at lakeside as Mrs Harold S Hoover of Canton, another McCabe daughter, was ordained a Methodist minister by Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes during a Northeast Ohio conference session.

Shelling Corn for Future Storage by Local Committee

The Wryvandot county AAA committee shelled and resealed about 38 000 bushels of 1938 corn stored by farmers. Portable shellers, each handling 1000 bushels a day, are performing the work to prepare the crop for long term storage.

Jacksonville Illinois observes a three day holiday for the 100th anniversary of Joseph Capps woolen mill founded in 1839. Mrs J McCabe, founder’s daughter, arrives with Mrs H M Grinton to attend as guest of honor. A pageant and speakers mark the event through Friday.

Dominican Sister Rosaire and Mother Stephanie News

Sister M Rosaire, daughter of Mr and Mrs Rall, is stationed near Foochow China amid war. Mother Stephanie, mother general of the Dominicans, had just returned from mission fields and visited the Rall home in Upper Sandusky. Bombing at the mission forced safe relocation of about 500 orphans, Sisters, and priests. Rosaire is reported alive and well, though conditions are uncertain and news travels slowly.

Carey Philharmonic Society Plans First Rehearsal

The Carey Philharmonic Society will hold a serial meeting with Mrs. Clayton Shuman on Tuesday evening September 19 at 8 30. Hostesses include Mrs Clyde Jenkins and Mrs Ross Johnson. Rev Paul R Clouser of Christ Lutheran was guest preacher at the Bucyrus Lutheran church rededication after remodeling and redecorating. Mrs Clouser attended. Miss Jennie Powell spoke at Christ Lutheran during Clouser’s absence, with H E Snyder reading the lesson.

Gasco Food Institute Held at Catholic Hall December 12 13

The 1940 Gasco Food Institute will be held at Catholic Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings December 12 and 13. The Ohio Fuel Gas Co and The Fares Times will cooperate in placing the food institute before the public. It will be the third shop of this type held in Carev.

Justice of the Peace Fees Rules for Acting Mayors

Attorney General Thomas J Herbert ruled that mayors lacking police judges may appoint a justice of the peace to preside during illness or absence, but the acting official cannot claim fees from cases heard in that role. Fees from ordinance cases go to the municipal treasury, while in state statute cases the mayor’s fees go to the county treasury and must be paid by the acting justice to the county.

Metal silo collapses on farm northwest of Carey

A large metal silo on the E T Criger farm northwest of Carey collapsed last Thursday after the silage acid had corroded a seam near the base. No injuries were reported and only minor damage besides the silo loss occurred. The silage was moved to a neighboring silo.

Carey Council Bids Farewell to Two Friars at Special Meeting

Last Thursday Carey Council No 1925 Knights of Columbus held a well attended meeting to bid farewell to Friars John Jacoby Jr and Rene Dubois who will resume studies at Mt St Francis seminary Indiana. Farewells were followed by brief talks and refreshments. The first September meeting was held this week and a banquet is tentatively set for October 15 with Past Grand Knight C R Lonsway named chair of the council program committee.
