Carey Flier Wins Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism
First Lieutenant John Baker of Carey Ohio, navigator with the 215th Air Transport Command, earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. His bomber sustained heavy flak near Vienna, one engine out, but he aided a wounded gunner, helped bail out another crewman, and completed missions despite flames and danger. He later returned to Italy and logged about 30 missions, also holding the Air Medal with clusters.

1st Lt. George Corron Jr., 22, of Ohio, arrived at the Army redistribution station in Miami Beach for reassignment processing after completing a tour outside the continental United States. He will stay about two weeks for medical exams and classification interviews and rest and recreation. He is the navigator whose wife also lives at 517 West Street, Carey, Ohio.

A 6 pound son named Robert Jr. arrived Tuesday November 21 at St. Theresa’s Hospital in Waukegan Illinois to Dr. and Mrs. Robert Cassidy. the mother is Caroline Baker daughter of J F Baker. Dr. Cassidy, a lieutenant in the Navy medical corps, is stationed at Great Lakes north of Carey.

Appendicitis Attack Brings Comfort to Careys Soldier
It took an attack of acute appendicitis to provide T/5 Ralph J. Knaup of near Carey with his first bed and clean sheets after two and a half years outdoors. It required six hours to move him from the mountains to a hospital where he underwent an appendectomy. He is recovering satisfactorily after the operation, say his parents Jr and Mrs Ralph Knaup.

Pfc Robert Nye Killed in Action in Italy
Pfc Robert Nye was killed in action on Armistice Day in Italy. The 20 year old son of Orville and Flossie Nye of Carey enlisted in 1943, served in the 202nd Infantry with the 1st Division, and died after marrying Eunice Schroeder in 1942. He left for overseas duty in 1944 and is survived by his wife, two children, and his parents plus several siblings.
