The district reports six week tests underway with grade cards due next Wednesday. Thanksgiving holiday closes school Thursday and Friday. Christmas break runs December 22 through January 1, with classes resuming January 2. A poster set introduces abstract qualities and a pageant The Hope of a Nation. Chief Roging Wolf will lecture December 12. programs funded by the school activity fund.
Students will be dismissed Wednesday evening for the Thanksgiving holiday after six weeks of tests. Everyone may go home early to be thankful and enjoy the holiday with turkey.
The boys begin practice on Monday for the first game at Mt Blanchard on December 1. A week from Friday night aims to boost turnout. Earlier, the sophomore chapel featured scripture, solos, and plays including Romeo and Juliet and The Missing Umbrella with listed cast and performers.
Absentees have risen prompting a remedy. The school funds attendance, so a two minute pre dismissal home room check will monitor enrollment. The plan seeks to deter study hall cuts and urges parent cooperation to reduce truancy. only utterly necessary excuses remain unexcused.

Ohio publishers waived five year rule to admit Osman C Hooper, 381 year old professor emeritus at Ohio State University, as the hall's first living member He founded the hall 11 years ago and others admitted include Brand Whitlock and Frank M Hubbard two strong journalism figures from Toledo Chicago and Bellefontaine who created Abe Martin
Mrs David Lasley represented Carey Temple No 169 at the district convention in Mt Blanchard on Tuesday. Attendees from Carey included several members with about 200 present from Carey Mt Blanchard Sycamore Van Buren Bucyrus Forest Bloomville Nevada and Findlay lodges. Grand Chief Adelaide Bellew of Bucyrus and District Deputy Naamah Class of Sycamore attended.
There will be a regular meeting of Carey Lodge No 420 F and A M Friday evening November 24 with election of officers dues due and refreshments served Carl Krout W M William Zahn Secretary
The Protestant churches of Carey join in an annual Thanksgiving service at 7:30 PM at Christ Lutheran Church. Rev. Paul R. Clouser leads the vespers, Rev. W W Weiser reads scripture and offers thanks, and Rev. B L Lee delivers the sermon. The choir performs Bless the Lord by Williams. Community members are invited to attend.
Miss Angela Haferd daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Haferd east of Carey will receive a B A degree from St Marys of the Springs College Columbus in June and is listed in the 1939 40 issue of Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges The publication released early next year is a national recognition program for outstanding students and is used by recruiters and colleges alike. Haferd has held campus leadership roles including president of Lansbury hall house council and associate editor of The Tower.
Hen pheasants in the area are leaving country life as hunters trouble them. A hen entered the Midway Grill doorway then sought refuge at Henry Pieracini's door before escaping to an alley. Another hen wandered into Cy's garage paint room Monday forenoon.
The Carey fire department responded Tuesday forenoon to a lime plant fire that ruined the hoisting machine. A motor burned out and several cables were destroyed, with damage estimated at 1500 dollars. Cecil Presler, who operated the hoist, suffered facial and wrist burns.
Ora Kidwell an engineer at the porcelain plant underwent an emergency appendectomy Wednesday night at Findlay hospital. The surgery occurred after a sudden illness requiring medical attention.
The Peoples Bank will be closed all day Thursday November 23 in observance of Thanksgiving Day. The closure affects all banking operations and services.
Eddie Hans and Ruth Ingels introduce the Creath Dance R special at the Toledo Blade Midnight Benefit show in the Paramount Toledo on Thanksgiving Eve to aid Toledo school children. Proceeds go to charity. tickets at the theater box office.
Mr and Mrs C D Sheridan attend the funeral of Mrs. Robert Travis of Toledo. Services were at Glenwood Lutheran church at 2 00 pm officiated by Dr. Bell. Burial followed at Spring Grove cemetery near Carey. Mrs Travis born in Carey 33 years ago last June. maiden name Margaret Sutphen. Survived by husband James Sutphen and her parents Mr and Mrs G V Sutphen.
Forty three riders from Fostoria and vicinity organized the Black Aces Motorcycle Club. John Libbey is president, William Kirian vice president, Ralph Kirian treasurer, Robert Kroetz secretary, Charles Rusch road captain. Meetings are at Dier Grange hall while a clubroom is sought. A spring motorcycle meet is planned.
Revival services begin next Sunday evening at Arey Evangelical Church. Services run each night of the week except Saturday at 7 30 PM. The pastor will preach and a welcome is extended to all to attend and receive the truth from God's Word.
Mrs. R L Gottfried thanks friends for thoughts and kindness during illness and hospital stay in Toledo.
Miss Louise McFarland food lecturer will be ably assisted by Miss Martha Ulrich home service representative of the Gas company. The event, part of the 1940 Gasco Food Institute, will be presented December 12 and 13 at the Catholic hall. Ulrich offers cooking and kitchen advice at the Gas company office and by visit or phone.
The Carey Times promotes two new magazine clubs at low rates. Club No 1, The High Quality Offer, combines Colliers or substitutes with Mc Call’s True Romances Household and Woman’s World for a year at 150 dollars. Club No 2, The Real Value Offer, includes Inside Detective Woman’s World Household True Romances and Farm Journal Farmer’s Wife for a year at one dollar, with substitutions possible for Inside Detective Pathfinder or Modern Screen.
Tiffin reports Rushton D. Niles a 60 year old attorney and finance company official shot himself at his home Monday. Coroner P T Perin said the body was found sitting upright on a Davenport by Mrs Niles with a revolver at his feet. He had been suffering from a nervous breakdown and is survived by a daughter Marian.
Rebekah lodge will meet in regular session Tuesday evening November 28 at 7 20 PM at 720. Nominations of officers for next year will be made at this meeting. A good attendance of members is invited. Three new members were initiated at the last meeting.
Carey Townsend club invites members to a meeting Monday evening November 27 at the public library. Good music featured. Elza Garn, secretary.
Thomas A. Beckwith, former C and O electrician, has arranged a survey for a new 20 lot subdivision on 5 acres purchased from David Heck. The layout features curved boulevards with North Street Brown Avenue and Groveland Avenue intersecting the addition, aimed at residential development in Carey.
Ohio Christmas tree dealers who sell evergreens with roots intact must obtain a dealer license with a $10 fee under the revised plant pest law effective August 29. The license applies to sales of nursery stock including rooted trees, while general vendors do not face an extra license beyond the usual vendor permit.
Jack Tracy of Carey is a member of the Ohio Wesleyan University freshman debate and football teams. A 1939 Carey High School graduate, he engaged in dramatics athletics Boy Scouts glee club and Hi-Y, and is pledged to Delta Tau Delta. The debate squad will meet Denison Kenyon Wittenberg and Ohio universities. the football team played its first out of town game at Dayton Saturday.
Crawford chapter No 168 C B S met Friday for the annual election of officers. A potluck was served at 6 30. Elected were Worthy matron Mrs Samuel Gunther, worthy patron Nelson McLarkey, associate matron Mrs Perry McDaniel, associate patron Eldon Dame, secretary Mrs Gust Summit, treasurer Mrs Elizabeth Ewing, conductress Mrs George Snyder, associate conductress Mrs Richard Davidson, trustee for three years Mrs Parl C Goff. Officers to be installed late December.
Christ Lutheran church observes the list anniversary of its organization with Dr FEE Flack of Manma Divinity School Wittenberg college Springfield as special speaker on Sunday December 3.
The Young Ladies' Sodality sponsors a dance in the Catholic hall Friday evening November 24. The public is cordially invited.
